Corrective pruning of cider apple trees after broken branches

Last year 2 of our cider apples, variety Somerset Redstreak, had extremely heavy crops and branches snapped off under the weight. Here I correctively prune them. Also remove a large broken branch from a 30 year old tree of Tremlett's Bitter.

I love going back through your videos! You explain the reasons behind each of your cuts, taking the mystery out of pruning. I have learned a great deal watching your channel. Thank you!

Stephen, some years ago you very kindly sent me a small scion of Broxwood Foxwhelp. By careful grafting and re grafting, that little scion is now a large open-centred bush Broxwood Foxwhelp! In full blossom at the moment - very beautiful and a superb addition to my cider orchard. Many thanks and may God bless you.

Stephen, I've been watching your videos for at least the last 6 years and I continue to enjoy them today, your easy to listen to and you give excellent explanations of what you're doing with the trees. Your videos have even inspired me to start an Heirloom Orchard which now has 37 different varieties of apples and 2 different varieties of pears. Thank You for inspiring me to take the step of becoming an orchardist. Stay well Stephen you and your family.

This is very kind of you Keith. When we started the orchard in 1992, we wanted to help preserve some of these precious old heritage fruit varieties and encourage others to do the same. The internet was still science fiction at that time. It was almost by accident that we started YouTubing. It is very heart warming, if I may use that old cliché, to be told that we have inspired so many others to begin the great adventure of growing heritage apples, pears and plums. Kindest wished to you, your family, friends and trees.

Hello Stephen, I have watched every orchard video you have put out and read every page of your book (on a flight to England no less). From your comment in this video, I wanted to say you were a major factor in my decision to set up my own Apple orchard in upstate new york (documented rather poorly on my own youtube channel). I planted more than 30 kinds of apples with the majority being heritage varieties you had described. I have learned from your instruction and your videos of orchard mistakes. I often re-watch your videos (along with other RU-vidrs who are orchard enthusiasts and pioneers) in the depths of winter while I look forward to my own orchard reaching the level of vibrancy and maturity of many of your trees. I hope you and Julia and your extended family stay healthy and I look forward to your continued content!

Hello, sounds like a lovely orchard in the making. I'd be interested to hear what apples have did well for you in NY? Best wishes :)
@doesthislookwright
@doesthislookwright 4 года назад
@@ascottishgarden3537 It is a bit too early to tell, None of them have fruited and they have only been in the ground 2 years for the most part. They are small still and were planted as bare root. Almost all are bothered by cedar-apple rust as eastern red cedar trees and crab apples are almost everywhere in ny. That has been the number one issue besides deer pressure. Keep an eye on my channel, I may do an update in a month or so to show where everything is and how they are doing. Thank you for the idea!

I have to say, listening to your videos (I'm usually cooking or doing something cider related so I'm not necessarily watching per se) is so relaxing, thank you :)

Good to see you both in the orchard again! Your early years of kindness on the cider blog suggesting books to me as well as Andrew helped inspire the trees I planted years ago in my back yard in Upstate, NY....Cheers

I would like to say that you and Julia have inspired me along the way and now every year looks better in my tree department. When you say Old Hampshire, Old England it magnifies the fact ,to me, that I live on the Downeast Coast of Maine, New England and of course the only state we border is New Hampshire. I think it may have been wishful thinking that New England was like Old England.

Ahh another orchard video! Made my day. Although you did not exactly inspire me to plant an orchard, the varieties I chose are your responsibility ;) Very happy with the Somerset red streak, what a beautiful apple! I also have Tom Putt and a couple of others you recomend. Last year we had a lot of badger damage barking the apple and cherry trees. I thought I would loose several trees so I tried to do some grafting to go over the damage (right down to the wood all around a couple of trees. ) After grafting I severely cut the trees back to reduce demand until the grafts could take. I am not certain all the grafts took because it was my 1st attempt I expected a lot of failure. Yesterday I checked and all the trees are still alive. Many seem to have been able to re-bark under the wrappings I put around them too. Which is strange. Anyway I would send you some pictures of my plum and damson blossom if I could. Thanks as always and keep smiling!

i have found your channel after i already started planting, but i did learn a lot of pruning from you and the chip bud grafting, as a beginner it was the only one that seemed easy enough to try and it worked! So thanks for everything.

Hi Stephen! Good to see you and Julia back in the orchard. I planted a small orchard a few years back after watching all of your videos. The trees are doing well. Wanted to see if I could grow apples and pears in southeastern U.S. ( Alabama). Varieties include: Orleans Reinette, Bramley, Kidd's Orange Red, St. Edmund's Pippin, Ashmead's Kernel and a few Perry Pears: Brandy, Henry Huffcap, Yellow Huffcap, and Butts. Take care and I look forward to future videos!

I am so surprised that some of your trees are not leafed out yet. I have an Arkansas Black (spur type) that has a few open blossoms. We have been having a warm spell, which may have brought on the budding. My latitude is 38 degrees 59 minutes north. I planted a Sundowner this spring and have one of the columnar apples in my yard as well. I bought the latter as a botanical curiosity, not fully understanding you have to cut off all of the side branches to maintain the columnar habit. 🤔 Our state Extension Office recommends pruning apple trees as a pyramid, but I have trained the Arkansas Black as and open goblet, as you describe. It makes it a lot easier for me to harvest. Keep posting your videos. I enjoyed them immensely.

Stephen Thank You for another video. I have planted 10 apple trees of hard to find apples. I also have cherry and a few pears. I'm still waiting for the first harvest of apples. The oldest have been growing 4 years now so apples should come this year. All the Best Kim

I used to seal them, but now don't. Grafting cuts are another matter, I always seal them with polythene or wax as required.
