Corsair has now released their new HD120 and SP120 series of RGB LED Fans. From £15 each are these colourful new fans worth it? www.overclock3d.net/reviews/ca...
I love these. My wife got me 6 for the holidays. I'm in complete agreement that I wish corsair would have implemented some kind of link to the rest of their RGB products, so CUE or Link would work with them. I'd love to have multiple colors on a fan going at once, so there was a like a rainbow effect on one fan. More manual control would be great as well so you could choose which colors it switches to so you can limit them--as you said white to red all day long.
Late to the party, but I'm so glad I went with the HD's! I bought the crystal 570X for my new build and that had the SP's in it, but as I didn't know the difference at the time, I bought two HD140's for my AIO at the same time. The difference was so great that now I have 4xHD120 + 2xHD140 and I love 'em! Especially when playing Far Cry 5. The iCue integration in it made my case and keyboard (K65 RGB) light up so nicely! Wish other developers will support it too, since the ambiance it gives is just so beautiful!
I wish more companies made LEDs that are on the outside rim like the Vegas fans. They look amazing, of course they also have a reflective surface on their fans to make the better appearance. Those Hds look pretty amazing. Still not as good, but much better than normal fan LEDs.
@15:08 JINKIES! That's awesome! That' has me sold for when I need my computer to hypnotize me. I only just bought some LED fans about 2 months ago. :T I found it so hypnotic I rewatched that segment of your video about 5 times to watch the light cycle in those modes.
Brilliant Vid bud! Would like to get these. The HD should look amazing in my setup. I would stick it on RED though. I have the 100GTX AIO and the Obsidian 750d with the Gigabyte Gaming 990FX so RED is the theme for me! I agree with you about the Corsair Link option as well though.
These look amazing, especially what you can do with the HDs. I do think though that they have a ways to go before I feel these are actually worth buying. First off, they need 140mm models... Currently I have 5 140s in my system, and once I swap out my CLC I'll have another two replacing the two 120s I have on it now. Many mid-size cases have a half-and-half mix of 120/140s, and there are even some tiny cases out there that work well with a 140 or two. Next, this needs software control to play nice with all their other peripherals. Considering the $60 cost of the Hue+, if they can get a 6 fan kit w/ the internal controller down around the $120-140 range (depending on what mix of 120/140s), that could be a genuinely worthwhile option. Yes you can cheap out on fans and go far lower, but to get great fans and really all the lighting you'd need (that's adaptive to any new build color schemes you want to go for) for your whole system for that price, it's really not bad at all.
A very annoying thing is that you can't turn off led, If I want to sleep but leave pc on for huge file downloading I gave to disable controller manually by pull out the power to controller, is very frustrating
Great representation of the fans, I would however have liked to see some benchmarks of them compared to like Noctua fans or something. I also couldn't agree more, these fans really would be so much better with a way to connect it to their Link or Cue software. In my mind it's just stupid that Corsair didn't do that, but as you said they might make a controller, that you can buy separately for that later on, if enough people show interest for it.
The lighting effects are really well-done (I think the SP has a better purple, and the HD has a better yellow), but they are definitely louder full-speed than the MagLev ones. Would like to see a SP version with the ML mechanism and call it a day there. Would be really cool. :)
I jus bought the hd 120s and the thing I don't like is that there's adhesive tape to hold the hub and controller I wish they went with a magnet for easy movability not a deal breaker but nzxt rgbs fans comes with a magnet I though that was a cool addition
I 100% agree with you. I love the HD120 RGB but, it seems very odd to me they do not integrate with the Corsair Link software. Corsair seems to be growing on me but, I am getting frustrated between Corsair Link and Corsair Cue and then external systems/remotes. I want to control this with software. My dream rig would have the color chase between orange, blue, and white and I can't do that with the HD120 RGB as they stand now. Perhaps the additionally controller, attached into a USB 2.0 header on the motherboard like you said is the best route. Make it additional for the people who want and can afford it.
Does the SPEED switch also not dim the lights when they are in FIXED mode? I mostly want the HD120 fans for the performance as the SP120 LED fans I have are just not up to the task of pushing throught the H80i v2 as I would want unless its in a PushPull setup, which I do not want. I just want fixed white, but not overpowered white..
I have got to get me about 4 of these. I can get a third mortgage , right? The nzxt rgb fans are good lookin' too, and they have software control and can be co-ordinated with the HUE + rgb strips, which is a huge plus. Problem is the very average static pressure
would have loved a side by side comparison, sad im going with the whole asus aura type of build and this arnt compatible still really cool will be picking up 3 myself.
class review not watched one in a while as well them hd fans are very nice, goiing to get that mm800 mat as well ,hope review comes soon for that only problem that cue 2 software is buggy as hell
liking the effect, just wondering why the price is so high...but i know for sure they would look very good on a WC rad, wish they was able to be connect to the Corsair link, on the Hydro...
I was in the same mind-set as you about preferring a straight white led as "white" with an RGB setup isnt usually white. But I really like the looks of these. I have a straight white maglev fan already, how does the white with these compare? Because I do have three fans in the front of my 900D to replace haha.
FantaFuture92 "RGB (red, green, and blue) refers to a system for representing the colors to be used on a computer display. Red, green, and blue can be combined in various proportions to obtain any color in the visible spectrum. Levels of R, G, and B can each range from 0 to 100 percent of full intensity."
nimrodery Yes correct. But how do you want to store all the colors when it´s not done in software? I´m not a RGB fanboy so for me 7 colours would be more than enough. I guess you wouldnt complain about it if it would just say 7 colours on the box and not RGB right?
RGB, not full RGB. If you're really particular about your color scheme, get some white fans and the NZXT Hue+ kit or an Aura setup; way more color choices that you can perform through software instead of some gimmicky controller.
I think it's *very* nice indeed that they didn't make this compatible with their Link software. So strange. Would be nice to have the speed of the light rotation to change with the temp of something in the case, or the color change according to temp etc.. Kinda like NZXT does with their Hue+.
Got the Crystal Series 570X RGB case, H115i, K70 RGB RAPIDFIRE, imagine how good it would look if i put 4 of those on my case and 2 on cooler and all i want to is my system to change colors on the CPU temps......
Corsair should make a link dongle where you can plug in all your link products, like psu, water cooler and fans to a single internal usb 2.0 header and where you can control all the led rgb lights from them in the software
NO NO NO corsair! listen, make the fans controllable by a NORMAL LED STRIP CONTROLLER!! this way you can hook them in to a LED strip and control them with the asus aura thing or with one of those remotes. this is cool but the standard LED strip header is even cooler. make the ML series in the better way!
Yes you can, just add the header to the fan controller box so the fans sync up to your system. And with fancy led strips, just add a small header to the fan itself
Normal LED strips work as follows. 12V is applied to all LED's. Then the controller grounds each color to turn it on. To get other colors it turns them on and off very rapidly. The RGB fans use a 5V supply for starters, then the controller sends digital data to the LED driver chips inside the fans which then drive the LED elements to the desired color. If you wire this up to your motherboard it will not work and will destroy the fans.
In fact they can not because their system uses the exact same command language. The NZXT strips, and fans only work with their HUE+ controller which is the same system of individually addressable LED's found in the Corsir fans. I have the NZXT hardware here and have taken it all apart. They still use 4 pin cables but they have power, data, ground, and an analog sense pin to detect the number of LED strips connected. If you connect the NXZT strips to a "normal LED strip controller" it will burn them out immediately.
Great job as always Tom, Do you know if Corsair has any plans to produce an extended mouse pad with leds I thought someone would have designed one by now with extended pads becoming so popular in modern setups.
+Pheerapat Kujaroenchaimanatee Hi I checked out the mm800 mouse mat but it's not the type I was talking about I was referring to the extended wide mouse mats that you can fit your keyboard on as well as your mouse but thanks anyhow for the response.
Hi, I like your reviews and all, but how about the actual performance, noise etc? -_- I know they are shiny and all, but I am more interested in the cooling performance and noise.
if corsair wantes to capitalize on link. they should make a central hub unit for one usb header with optional extension kits for neat wire management to all imputs from multiple link capable systems
I don't no if u can help me out I have 3 x140 hd rgb fans and 2 x 120 hd rgb fans , I connect them all to the hub and only no.1 works , forgot to mention that I have connected to the power supply as well and I have checked the the fans rgb that they all work , do u have to have all 6 fans to work of the hub for the rgb to work , that's the Impression I get what it explains in the manual
Ooohh... They're awesome. I'd have to get the HD version though, they look so much better... As if there's no ability to control through Corsair's Link software though... That's a trick missed.
if I could get this with usb LED controller N some RGB LED strips n an RGB mobo n a White Case... it would just be the ultimate RGB case of Goodness... just the ability to turn out the lights at night would be a must as my computer is part time server
Wat I really want is a version that is integrated into corsair link so I can have software controll over the LEDs in the fans. Then they need to offer full standard RGB control, not only 7 colors and also release a 140mm version. On the other had, that would probably cost twice as much ... hmmmm.
damn I should have gotten the HD120's...........I bought the SP120, waiting on the 460x case to get here. Maybe down the road I will get the HD120, it's all for shiny appeal anyway.
why no 140mm??? And yeah, why no control from the desktop like you can with their RGB keyboard/mouse/mouse pad? Wanted the SP cuz i like the subtle glow they put out but i have 140mm fans in my CPU cooler..had to go with the Riings.
Been waiting for these! I just jizzed in my pants watching the lights.... Sounded like Tom did too hahaha. These fans are awesome!!! I'll be getting these for sure. Thanks Tom for a great, in depth and fun review
Since the controller has room for 6 fans, can a couple of rgb strips be plugged in to the controller? This would be so cool in the anidees AI7 with 4 120s in the front and 2 in the top, I might just waste that cash...
Is LED brightness effected by fan speed. I ran into the problem with corsair led fans being way to dim as I like my fans thermally controlled. I don't want them full speed all the time will this cause them to be dim?
Corsair said we would be able to customize these through their LINK software, the same way we can do with their keyboards, mice, mouse pad, etc etc Any ETA on when we will be able to do that?
