Getting ready to tackle this in the Spring Glen. Bought a low profile jack for my 2019 GS and ready to get after it. Thank you for another informative, well made video!
Glenn, great job showing this service procedure. Informative and to the point! It is refreshing not hearing some guy exercising his ego as so many of these videos that are more performance than substance. Thank again, my 2014 will definitely benefit from this.
I just purchased a 2016 z51 m7 with 28k. I am a diy guy and like learning new things about my vehicle. Just finished clutch and trans fluid changes and will be starting rear dif fluid shortly. I was a trainer for many years and i can say with 100% certainty that your videos are excellent. Thanks very much for a job well done!
I bought all the back half fluids for my C6. The transmission went easy but the diff was a problem. I didn’t remove the lower plug but I bumped it and it moved. The top wouldn’t budge. I did everything I felt comfortable with to get that top plug out. Eventually I decided to take it to the shop. I didn’t have the guts to put the heat on it. I ended up selling the car before getting it to the shop.
Hello again, just an update on my last comment. I followed your differential fluid change procedure to the letter including putting some electrical tape on the 3/8" universal to reinstall the fill plug which was hugely helpful. As mentioned my Z51 has just turned 28k miles. The fluid level was 1/2 quart low and also there was a fair amount of particles on the drain plug. With your advice, I was happy to get the fluid changed. I did wrap some aluminum foil around the rear support member to prevent any fluid from making its way into the member and then spilling on my beautiful garage floor or pavers in the driveway. However the only fluid that got on the member is when the diff was full and a few drops ran out of the fill hole. Also i cracked but did not remove the fill plug when draining thus limiting the flow of fluid from the drain plug and reducing the chance for a mess! So please accept my sincere appreciation for this and all your videos. Though this is my 3rd Corvette in my lifetime, there is always lots to learn. Its important to have a trusted resource to obtain information and for me, you are that resource! Thanks again!
Thank you Robert I really appreciate your comment and support! It's a good feeling knowing that fresh oil is in the differential and hopefully adding to longevity and reliability. Take it easy. -Glen
I just changed to rear end fluid in my 2014 C7. It was way easier than I thought. C7 owners need to check the fill and drain plugs on their cars. Both plugs were only finger tight,,,,, OMG! As long as you are under there,,, change it, 3 qts and you are done.
Good afternoon Glen, do I need to run the car around to warm this gear oil up before doing this so it will come out easier or does that even matter? Thanks!
If your car is in a very cold climate, lower than 40⁰ it might not be a bad idea. Either way, regardless of ambient temperature the hotter the gear oil the better it will flow out. Have fun, you're in for a treat! Haha
When you first showed that fill plug, I knew that joker was going to be tough getting to it. Having the U-joint with tape on it works great as I've used that method too. Keep up the good work Glen and don't work too hard!
Glenn, I got a little surprised when I got under my C-7. I have a Premiere Edition Convertible (#090) that is a Z-51 3LT. Since the convertible Z-51's do not have a air intake like the coupes do, GM puts 2 ea. 7- 8 inch coolers for the differential just ahead of the drain and fill plugs. This makes getting at these plugs a lot more difficult. I am right in the middle of the job and have both plugs out and I am dreading putting them back in. Perhaps your followers need to know this information before they start the job. This just might be better done by the dealership techs, but it is going to be a lot more costly for the owner.
On my '16 Z51, when I'm turning while backing out of the driveway, there is a shudder. My late Corvette expert said there was an additive that he could put in to limit or eliminate that shudder. Are you familiar with that additive?
My buddy has used the gear oil 75W90 from Walmart and it costs $5.00 only- he did his Mercedes’ differential fluid change with it too So Should I use the Walmart stuff or spend 20-30$ per quart from name brands who spend tons of money advertising their product which is not superior to any Please advise?
Use the gear oil specifications that the manufacturer recommends. In the long run replacing with cheap oil will cost hundreds to repair from premature wear.
I understand that the safe bet is to use the GM brand oil, but according to Lucas their gear oil contains more than adequate friction modifiers at half the cost. Let the discussion begin Lol BTW I've used the electrical tape on the universal swivel trick. Great video 👍
