Brando Sandoson has mentioned that time dilation is a factor to consider. Do you feel like he has this rigid timeline in mind or maybe he's just gonna time-dilation away future continuity errors?

I feel like time dilation is just a way to make sure certain characters stay alive over longer periods while not being technically immortal. I'm sure there's an actual solid timeline somewhere.

@@TheCosmerenaut yeah, the time dilation is also mostly in the context of the cognitive realm and space time being warped by large concentration of investiture. I don't think it plays as big a role as everyone makes it out to be.

it basically tells you Hlennial or however u spell it was super advanced before the Lord Ruler took up the power. I think in Hero if Ages it talks about how they had gunpowder but the Lord Ruler got rid of knowledge of it because he didn't like the idea of an untrained farmer being able to kill as easily or even easier than a Archer who trained for years. Anything that doesn't take years of practice he would suppress so that it would be harder for the Ska to organize revolts

Hey RAFO, couldn't they have hopped to Yolen? As the oldest planet with humans, I would assume they're sufficiently developed pretty early on in the timeline, comparatively.

That's totally possible; we just don't know enough about Yolen to really say for sure. There are other shardworlds we haven't heard of at all yet, so there's definitely more possibilities.

Great content! I've rewatched many times; first even before finishing all the cosmere books. Finally I think i got it all. A few questions/note: - the coppermind does not give time frame for Vo's Returning, are the 300 years between him and the Manywar from a wob? - at 3:00 you say Warbreaker a little bit *after Mistborn Era 1 ... I believe there is a wob now that puts Warbreaker about 2 generations before Way of Kings... so 250 years after Mistborn 1 (just noting, the 5 scholar detective work still holds solid)

I've been digging through my notes and can't find exactly where I got that 300 years figure for Vo's Return. There is a WoB where Brandon says it was on the order of hundreds of years before the Manywar, but not thousands. I may have just made an approximation that worked in the larger timeline, though thinking about the development of the kingdom of Hallandren it should probably be a little further back than just 300. Though that doesn't shift much on the grander scale. And yeah, I misspoke at that point. Oops.

Well we know Dragonsteel, which takes place on Yolen, occurs before the Shattering, so that's before anything else on this timeline.

Entirely possible. Though apparently the population on Yolen has dwindled significantly, and it's become "shrouded" in some way, so it's now really difficult to get to.

Those are some great ideas! The moons of Roshar are interesting, because they are actually in an unstable orbit: they're eventually going to either crash into the planet or be thrown out into space. That eventually is in terms of thousands of years, but they were definitely put there artificially. I do want to do a video about all the different races and cultures on Roshar, so I'll be sure to include their various legends as well! It's not explicitly stated in the book. The scientific nature of the language they use to describe Awakening is anachronistic of the relative time period Nalthis is in at that point, which hints that they traveled to a more advanced world. It's since been confirmed by Brandon.

If you've read Mistborn, I would say go to Elantris or Warbreaker and then jump in to Stormlight. There's a few things in the Stormlight Archive that make a bit more sense of you've read those first two.

They're actually pretty similar Cosmere-wide. The longest deviation is Roshar, whose year is about 10% longer than average. On the time scales in this video, that wouldn't affect much.

There's at least two answers to that question: how long ago was she born vs how many relative years has she been alive for. I don't think she's hacked anything to make herself immortal, but she's definitely been around for a good long time.

Wouldn’t there be some inaccuracies in this timeline as the Rosharian year is said to be longer than Cosmere standard as stated in Khriss’s essays in Arcanum Unbounded? I suppose it wouldn’t change it much but it would allow for more time for other stories to happen before SA1.

Wouldn't the definition of 'years' be different in different worlds? How can a time period from one (probably applicable solely to that world) be compared with the other? I have just read Mistborn Era 1, Elantris, and Warbreaker with no Arcanum stories. Maybe a noob question

Totally a valid question! The lengths of years on the various planets are actually really similar. The largest deviation we know of is Roshar, which has a length of about 1.1 Cosmere-standard year, so I figured with this rough of a scale it wouldn't make too much of an impact.

Didn't the Lord Ruler move Scadrial when he took power? I thought it was temperate and much the same as it is in era 2 before the Lord Ruler, and that's where the baseline knowledge that Sazed used came from when he ascended. So the movement and ecological changes Kris refers to could have been from the Lord Ruler. Unless she mentions multiple movements, which I'm starting to remember she did. It's been a long time since I listened to Arcanum Unbounded...

Yeah, the Arcanum shows two orbits for Scadrial, but it's currently in its post Final Empire position. So it used to be where it is now, Rashek moved it to burn off the mists, then Sazed moved it back.

Is time a cosmere constant ? We know planets have different sizes and gravity so what passes for 1 year on a planet could be 1.5 years in another for example Year would define the time the planet orbit its Sun but a Scadrian year would be different from a Rosharan year

There's minor variation in year length (Roshar is the longest at 1.1), but not really enough to mess up the overall timeline like this.

how do all these main cosmere characters get to live so long? if demoux was in the interlude in stormlight archive, together with someone from whitesand and Galladon, he mustve been around 340 years old. Demoux wasnt even mistborn. how did he survive?

There is an element of time dilation in the Cosmere, so they haven't necessarily lived all those years. Being highly invested would have an effect too.

There are a few problems with the logic here, which show after a few rewatchings. 1. You are dismissing Threnody for anachronistic reasons. The voyages of the Five Scholares predated the Catacendre. Yet at the time of the Catacendre the Ire considered the Threnodites a major force you had to guard against. The Evil had not arrived. Threnodite refugee are unlikely to have made major scientific breakthroughs. In fact they have probably lost a good deal of technology. 2. Taldaine is not advanced enough. If you are giving its Darkside a level of technology around 1750 roughly at the time of Withe Sand and hypothize a visit a few hundred years later, you should be meeting fusion powered flying cars. Something or somebody (Autonomy) happened to Taldaine. We have no idea what exactly happened, but something must have stopped progress there.

Thanks for the feedback! It's true I don't go into Threnody much, but that's simply because we don't have a lot of information about historical Threnodites yet. And there's definitely something going on with Taldain which has stopped their technological progress. Brandon has said they were well on their way to be first to space, but something occurred that has stopped their progress: wob.coppermind.net/events/377/#e12236

I might have missed something but did you rule out some possible worlds for visitation due to the story set in them are taking place after they vent around visiting? would not the worlds still be there before the events of the story

The worlds would be there, but the societies on them would not have been at the right level of technology for the 5 Scholars to have appropriated the more advanced scientific thinking and terminology associated with Awakening. It's entirely possible the 5 Scholars visited any or all of these worlds, perhaps others that we don't know about, but this was an effort to find which specific planet had a relative technology level high enough in that period of time to boost the scientific advancement of the 5 Scholars.

So im getting a bit tripped up in some of the details here. Sure Warbreaker and Mistborn era 1 taking place before Stormlight archive make sense because of references in that series to events of the earlier ones, as does putting Sixth of the Dusk at the end. But how do we establish so precisely where Mistborn Era 2 fits in? Why does it even have to cause a conflict if Warbreaker and Era 2 are set at the same time when Brandon could just as easily state that both took place before Stormlight? How are the placements of Elantris and Shadows of Silence determined? And why is Arcanium Unbound even on here when it contains stories set across almost all of the worlds covering thousands of years, including SOTD, which is after where it was placed?

Brandon said so in an interview, he said that Mistborn Era 2 takes place after Stormlight Era 1 but isn't certain wether it takes place before Stormlight 6 or after

Yup, Brandon said for timeline reasons Mistborn Era 2 has to occur after the first arc of Stormlight. This makes sense, given a couple of the mentions in the epigraphs from Harmony in Rhythm of War. Warbreaker can't happen at the same time, or even just before Way of Kings, because Vasher has to already be established on Roshar for quite a while by that point. In terms of the placement of Elantris, Brandon once said in an interview that it took place hundreds of years before Mistborn Era 1, but not quite thousands of years. In another interview he says that Shadows for Silence happens in the latter half of things, but before Way of Kings. I placed Arcanum Onbounded where I did in relation to when Khriss must have written the essays on each system, which had to have been after Mistborn Era 1. Make sense?

@@TheCosmerenaut Mostly. Thanks for the reply. I'm still not sure though why Mistborn era 2 has to take place after Stormlight era 1 though. Even with the Harmony epigraphs and that other character who pops up at the end of ROW (not naming for spoilers) , I don't see any reason why it necessarily has to be placed where it is given what we know in-canon. All that really is established by these facts is that it occurs sometime after Hero of Ages (1 year? 10,000 years?) Also I still am unsure about Arcanium. Is it assumed that Khriss wrote these essays roughly at the same time that the stories about those systems took place? If so, the very fact that Sixth of the Dust is in there would place Arcanium at the very end of the timeline. Thank you for taking the time to answer!

Really the main reason we know Era 2 is after Stormlight 1 is because Brandon said so. We know Hero of Ages occurs 341 years before Alloy of Law, so that sets our timescale. In terms of the Arcanum essays, we know they were written all at the same time because of certain clues in the text itself, but also because Brandon said: wob.coppermind.net/events/87/#e5509

I guess I've always taken stuff Brandon has said that hasn't been confirmed in the books as Canon-light (Diet canon?) since more than once he has gone back and contradicted what he has said in interviews once it comes time to actually work out all the details in the book, realizing that something he has previously said has to change for it to all make sense.

Sanderson has said most planets have years comparable to length with Earth's Roshar is one of if not the biggest deviant from that but even then a Rosharan year is equivalent to 1.1 Earth years so it wouldn't be that big of a difference.

I don’t accept your argument that chowta is indicative of technological progression through it resemblance to industrial street food (there’s plenty examples of similar dishes that are deeply pre industrial). If you want to use food in Roshar to gauge industrialization, soul casting as a form of industrialized food process, is the obvious path

Yep, that's when the intros by Khriss had to have been written. Most everything else was some sort of appendage to a bigger series, and those that weren't I included in their own positions on the timeline.

Haha, that first image in the timeline is the symbol for Dragonsteel Entertainment, Brandon's publishing company, and also the name of his earliest Cosmere novel. We get a lot of realmatic knowledge from Emperor's Soul, and the rest of the Arcanum has some fantastic stuff in it. My next video is about White Sand, so I can help catch you up!

I was actually concerned about that as I was researching, particularly with Roshar with its 500 day year. However, Rosharan days are shorter, so the year only comes out to about 1.1 Earth years. Apart from that, the other planetary year lengths are all pretty similar. And this timeline is general enough that deviations in year length wouldn't effect the rough event placement. Yeah, to be in the Goldilocks Zone does require a planet to have a year length of ~ 300-500 days for a sun with similar properties to our own

In that same WoB ( wob.coppermind.net/events/181-stormlight-three-update-4/#e3781 ), Brandon says that the official calendar used by the Final Empire was actually still based on pre-Rashek orbit. So the year length changed, but the timekeeping didn't, which is kinda funky.
