When Starscream says “unfortunately the operation is successful” that is easily the funniest line of the entire series perhaps. Lol

This had some dark elements to it. Seeing and hearing Megatron deteriorate and watching his hand fall off was pretty freaky I must say.

You know this is going to be a good episode when it starts out with easily the four most entertaining Decepticons.

Loved this episode as a kid. There were a lot of dark episodes like this, Starscream's Ghost is another good one.

Megatron gets hit by a meteor fragment and Starscream doesn't give his standard "Megatron has fallen...!" speach? Bizarre.

The cosmic rust seems to have permanently altered Megatron's circuits to be even more sadistic than he was previously. He had a superweapon capable of destroying the Autobots outright yet he only uses it as central heating in order to destroy them slowly.

In hindsight, some of the stuff they were doing in Season 2, by setting stories in space and showing more Cybertronian looking Transformers, was setting the stage for what we’d see in the movie and season 3

Fact: Though the title disease is more akin to Bubonic Plague or Smallpox, Paul Davids was inspired to write this episode from the AIDS crisis of the 1980s.

I never noticed how mature the language can be in these cartoons sometimes. I'm not sure an 8 year old today would understand when Astrotrain says "the omens are ill"... whereas I remember imitating this language sometimes when I was a kid.

When I first saw this episode and heard of the Cosmic Rust one thing I had always wondered about after learning of the Quintessons being responsible for creating the Transformers is if they were the ones who created the cosmic Rust as we've seen in this episode it is the only cosmic organic substance capable of destroying the Transformers both Autobot and Decepticon as Megatron was the first to be infected by it from that asteroid fragment that punched through AstroTrain's hull near his main thrusters.

Perceptor indeed deserves a National Scientific Achievement Award for his invention, corrostop, which it's not just removed and prevented corrosion and rust of any form, but it's the only known cure for the dreaded Cosmic Rust. Too bad that he and Wheejack didn't finally made the matter duplicator works a lot sooner, so they can duplicated Ingredient X, so they can make more corrostop to immediately cured all of the Autobots from Cosmic Rust and also used it on all of the other monuments in the world.

Hold up your hand if you used to watch this on Wacaday with Timmy mallet. Man, back in '85 used to get up early on weekends just to catch 5 minutes of Transformers, without a doubt the best thing ever to come, I watch it with my son now and he loves it too. '84 was the year all the cool sh*t got made.

The stunticons had to ride the ferry to Liberty Island but at the end of the episode, they just flew away with the rest of the Decepticons. 21:30 A very verbose way of saying "Retreat".

These generations have no ideal of what real art looks like. The best of things no one dies in each episode. At least that I can remember.

You know, while Starscream could have taken the chance as well and somehow that didn't cross his mind; you'd think Megatron would rely on Soundwave, the constructicons, maybe make a quick call to Shockwave, or something like that instead of taking medical attention from Starscream of all the cons. Megatron is pretty much leaving a metaphorical target on him to say "shoot me at my most vulnerable", I mean seriously, has the seeker been more of a brainiac, Starscream might as well could even make a plausible autopsy paper for the Decepticons given he's a scientist.

At 14:02 Prime didn't really need the entire Autpbot team just to rescue Perceptor.

This episode was much more serious in tone than the majority of episodes. Listen how Prime speaks when he is gathering the troops to rescue perceptor; the way perceptor was kidnapped, it had a shock value to it that wasn’t always featured. Nothing about this episode had that whimsical, silly tone that lots of season 2 episodes had, except maybe the matter duplicator sidebar. It wasn’t as dark as some of the movie, but it seems like it was kind of leading to that era. The plot was great, & it was definitely one of the better episodes imo.

At least, in the much later movie (aired post-season 2), the Decepticons are, finally, shown to be not as bad as they were initially thought to be (when Unicron transforms to terrifying giant robot mode, which even terrifies Galvatron, especially after Unicron says about ‘Cybertron’s dismemberment’). I’d have loved seeing Galvatron being the one who rescued Spike (who was now an adult), and Bumblebee and Jazz & Cliffjumper, from getting dropped into Unicron’s acid vat, by transforming to laser cannon mode and blasting the acid vat cover (especially when Hot Rod and Galvatron were going to be allies against Unicron). This could have (I mean in a good way) led Galvatron to feel upset about all the things he did (as his old self - Megatron), like how he was in this episode.

Am I the only one who thinks that Megatron sounds like he's very sick in the series?

Notice how the Autobot in the hologram early in the episode looks like Blurr? Also, the Autobot that collapsed and crumbled into dust in the video recording that Teletran I had about Cosmic Rust looks somewhat like Ironhide. Could the ancient Blurr lookalike be one of Blurr's ancestors? Also, could the Autobot in the video recording I mentioned be one of Ironhide's ancestors?

All these episodes are so cringe - no logic, obvious mistakes, plot holes, but dang I love it to bits! So many good memories. G1 forever. And this is one of my favourites - love the bantering between ol Megs and Screamer.

Corr-a-stop I imagine became something all transformers were coated with after this. The Autobots can mass produce it and I think Megatron would be forward thinking enough to send a sample to Shockwave and have break down the formula and recreate it without the *X* catalyst.

I like Perceptor because he’s the Autobots’ scientist.

As I recall, in the Beast Wars, Quickstrike wanted to cripple the Maximals rather than terminate them outright. Wanted them to suffer for a while. The Beast Wars Megatron responded, "I like the way you think, Quickstrike. Unfortunately, business before pleasure." I think Quickstrike would have liked G1 Megatron's answer to Rumble's question here.

One of the greatest episodes of Season 2, IMHO. I wonder why the Stunticons were so gun-ho about taking over the ferry? First hostage taking scenario for them perhaps? 🤔

Surely they could have made some shade and blocked the suns rays to buy some more time. The Arialbots could have merged to Superion and just stood there blocking the sun for a few minutes until it passed, while the rest of the Autobots covered for him. Then they'd have about 24 hours to discuss a plan to save Perceptor without getting infected.

If the Stunticons can fly, why did they need to come over by boat?

Sooooo...Megatron had difficulty breathing and coughed like an 80 a day smoker during his spell of rustitis...interesting! 🤔🤔🤔 Also i distinctly remember all the decepticons fall into a volcano mid season 1...despite then all having in built anti grav tech they still plummeted to their lavery doom. Lo and behold the next episode there they all are...resurected like Lazarus as if nothing happened....pretty sure i didn't miss an episode 😂 Still love the transformers though, the banter between Starscream and Megatron will forever be in my memory, this episode especially...so many burns on MT and he didn't even retort. 😂😂😂 SS lives everytime...legend! It just occurred to me that Blaster rhymes the same way Roadblock does in GI Joe. I've always known both shows used same voice talent aka Starscream/Cobra Commander but I never thought about Blaster & Roadblock similarities. I wonder if their voice actor was the same?
