Helen Barnard, director of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, discusses the cost of living crisis with Trevor Phillips.
She reveals some of the hardships many people are having to endure as incomes are squeezed.
Last week it was revealed that the wife of Chancellor Rishi Sunak avoided paying millions of pounds in taxes in the UK while her husband was raising National Insurance for millions of people.

Who else could raise their prices by 54% ? I'm self employed, if I did that I'd have no work . I've paid into a system for 40 years and I can't get any help . The government are robbing us . It's a disgrace.

Yep. My grand-dad died at 60. He paid in and worked all his life and never got to claim his pension. It should have gone to his wife who he was married to for over 40 years, but instead the robbing Government will pocket it.. The system in this country is setup in a way to benefit the rich, while the poor stay poor. All the time while they rob us and laugh while doing it.

I'm self employed too & can't claim much either. Our sales have dropped by 70% & due to unnecessary lockdowns & now the cost of living crisis. Amazing that France can top it's gas & electric at 4% & our government allows it to go to 54%. They have reduced Britain to a third world country I hope they are proud of themselves. Off with their heads 🤬.

Shopping in Aldi today seeing empty shelves for basic staples such as tomatoes, coffee and fish fingers and then having to buy bread at 10 p more than it was 2 weeks ago makes me angry and angrier at the knowledge my savings are losing value by 8% per year while Bank of England does practically nothing about the interest rates sitting at historically low levels - 0.75% while CPI = 8% and RPI = 9.5%. They need to raise interest rates by >5% to reduce demand which will dampen inflation - it has already been done in 70's when the interest rates went to 15% and triggered a recession but most experts believe a recession is inevitable anyway. I suspect civil unrest is coming unless fundamental changes are made ASAP.

To slow the inflation, they’d need to do more than just increase interest rates. We also need to: -stop increasing minimum wage -cut benefits -cut public spending -balance the budget so we don’t spend more than we earn That would annoy most of the nation, of course, and in the short term could be hard to accept, but as the Chinese saying goes “good medicine tastes bitter.”

The other side of this is that even those that work and are on minimum wage are definitely not in a situation that by working it always pays more than benefits. The class divide is growing greater by the week. So out of touch is this government to the cost of living plight of the many across the U.K. today. They have repeatedly stopped wage rises in the NHS for over a decade and now wonder why nobody wants to work in nursing!?!? Their ignorance to the average working persons life and struggles are so blatantly obvious that the damage this government has done to lots of employment sectors is going to take a decade or more to recover. Those sectors with the key workers they encouraged the nation to clap 👏🏻 on a Thursday at 8pm. How about putting these key workers in a different tax bracket if u can’t stomach paying them for their efforts this past two years????

Your right in some ways, I have a great life - a five star life but I have a system where I only pay 2 star money. I'm very big on managing my money, I want every £ to go as far as possible. It all boils down to formulating a system that works for me - and my system has & continues to work like an ultra efficient, well oiled engine.

government needs to launch a massive home insulation programme starting with the poorest households. That is the best way to cut bills for struggling families and reduce our consumption of Russian gas. If Boris is ambitious enough we could do this within the next few winters nationwide

We have teenagers fainting at food giveaways, the world hasn't changed in years. European / or / Caucasian European Descendants who hold the 2nd highest suicide rate were : 1. The first slaves and the Irish were the first to be drawn as apes, monkeys and gorillas to discriminate them from looking human and surviving better... what I see is so many 'white' people, years and years, giving up their homes, neighborhoods, jobs and dreams to others and their local and federal governments. I used Food give-away's and churches for clothes my sons whole life here in USA and so I am also white. I saw black people always making sure they had jobs and homes, thru bullying or criminal acts but whites, Europeans too are really struggling - this makes me sad.

This is just a load of bull. It’s the lower middle class that’s hit hardest by events like this. The poorest will just get higher minimum wage, more benefits and handouts, all paid for by middle classes, while middle classes themselves get NI contribution increase, interest rates hikes and wage freeze.

Not true. Those on benefits are only getting a fraction of the increase that is being applied to the cost of living, 3.1% vs 8%. EVERYONE is being hit by this except for the super-rich, just in different places.

@@Melissa.Garrett I am affected by increased cost of living too. I’d take 3.1% against my 0% any day of the week. Not only am I getting 0% increase to my wage, but I also have increased NI contributions to pay and potential interest rate increase hanging above my head too. And while the inflation is at 8%, we’re increasing minimum wage (which is one of the inflation drivers) by 6.6% and spending on social programs (using money the government doesn’t have which will drive the inflation to even higher levels).

In work used to mean full time work so 40 plus hours per week , part time work is anything under 30 hours per week many of the so called working "poor" do minimum hours work to maximize in work benefits .

Yes agreed kind of, one problem I have with that saying is people who give up there jobs to look after sick family member get f all I gave up my job to look after my mother because there carers that he paid for were terrible and I mean terrible they nerely cost her her life one day so I was like no more I'm going to look after her . I applied for carers allowance & was told by DWP because I live with her Im not entitled to it and have expected to look after her anyway so I went from proudly earning 365 a week to barely getting that a month with no help from the government & a nurse told me they do this to sick people so they can save money it a dirty trick they use

The biggest benefit expense is pensions with the other being working tax credits. Pensioners don't work and the clues in the name with the other.

Those who grew during the 70s will know that there isn't a "cost of living" crisis. There's a "I don't know how to manage my spending, grow veggies in my garden, bake my own bread, mend my own clothes, turn off the leccy and put a jumper on" crisis!
