$800 goes a lot further in the Philippines than it does in the United States. If that’s all that you have per month for retirement then you can still have a decent life in the Philippines. In America $800/month will either get you a spot on your friends sofa or living on the street. Of course, the more money that you have, the more comfortable you can live, but that goes for everywhere in the world. I know Filipino FAMILIES that live on $500/month and less. They still manage to send their kids to college too. Some say that you need $2k or $5k per month and up, but it just depends on how luxurious you want to live and how much traveling that you want to do. The bad thing about the Philippines is that they don’t have a safety net like they do in the States. In the States we have free food kitchens and hospitals can’t turn you away if you can’t pay.

The first guy makes perfect sense. You have initial set up fees for transitioning into the country. Sustainability is an individual concept. The sweet-spot budget is 2K to 3K and having medical coverage. Without a steady stream budget you are setting yourself up for failure.

$ 800 - $ 1000 monthly expense is already a comfortable living even for foreigners. The trick is to live away from highly urbanize cities like Metro Manila and lower down your craving of western style foods. Make a little adjustment to try local foods with once in a while dining at US or western restos. Also go for scooter or a mini van (multicabs) instead of a large pick-up truck for practical and easy to navigate travel. And lastly avoid living in your Filipina family's turf or you will end up supporting all of them including her nieces/nephews, unless you have a very big heart and open to help her family out.

You are right why come here to spend more money. Isn't it supposed to be to save money hell you should have stayed in your own country for that. I think they got some young wet box and went crazy. My wife doesn't like buying anything that's going to be expensive. Only thing I did for her mother was help her get eye surgery and the daughter that works in Ireland paid me back in 48hrs. It depends on how you present yourself. If you coming here just blowing money then you will get a partner that will help you spend. Just get a calculator and have some common sense. I spend 3k a month at the market and 3k in the grocery store. I don't buy junk food nor do i smoke or drink. I only went to Palaitium in 2010 before that in 1989. No bar girls, no parties, no high shopping bills, lights 3.5k, water 300php, gas 1k. Rent and car. And I save 1900-2000 a month. How hard is that. Remember no matter where you go young or old women have the same thing but just different owners.

That accounting of the guy from America is not representative of the average cost of living in the Phil. A 800US dollar will give you a relatively comfortable lifestyle if you do not indulge on too much luxuries?
@JojieCerteza
@JojieCerteza 11 месяцев назад
It depends on lifestyle - house maids earn like 5-10k pesos a month --- that's like 200 dollars per mnth.. but we won't be using that as a sample we'll use 30k pesos instead as it's more realistic (sort of)... that's like 600 dollars? maybe?? it's all about lifestyle -- people who earned and lived in dollar country worlds, that would be limiting - one could say survival mode -- and that's not a life..

@@johne1743 That makes sense. But I tend to put anyone that thinks it takes a lot of money to be happy into the category of "Rich". There are probably better words for it. Maybe "Arrogant, cocky, spoiled" etc. I live on less than $1K in America easily and am quite happy, so there it will be even less. I have 5 vehicles, land, and many toys including over $10K in camera gear alone, but I don't try and make others feel badly for living on less money. I live in Davao but have no costs except electric, internet as we own our house. We have solar and a deep well. I am currently working in Clark and rent a brand new, fully furnished studio apartment, with swimming pool and security. I pay 15k rent and about 2k electric, internet costs me 600 peso a month. I budget for food, laundry (2000 peso per month as 1 guy said is extreme) of which costs me 150 peso per week for laundry. I budget 30K a month and usually save a bout 10 K. I have lived here 25 years and yes you can survive very well on 1k USD per month. The guy from SF who spends 40k on groceries and 20K eating out , for 2 people, is either being ripped off or mistaken. For instance I bought 1 kg of rump steak in SM today and it was 470 peso. and that's good for 3 meals. To live a life that will give you a decent standard of living would be 100k pesos. Travel locally, a trike where I live is 15 peso, a jeepney ride of about 15km to Davao City center is 30 pesos.

Back in 2011 my 1-bedroom apt in Los Angeles was $900, in the Philippines I can live on less than $800 a month, having my own place saves me on accommodation and being dual saves me visa fees, shopping mostly at a local (public) market and cooking at home brings additional savings, I have a maid though who takes care of laundry, change my sheets, wash dishes and cleans the bathroom which gives me more time for myself. Of course once my social kicks in then I can splurge a little.

You can actually live in the Philippines for a $500-$600 a month depending on how u guys live. Basically, it’s you’re lifestyle. Cities/ municipalities or towns matters. Big cities is of course very expensive to live like in Manila and cebu. In my case, I spent $1000-$1200 (helper’s salary included 145$/month )for 5 people in the house in a month living comfortably.(house isn’t included,we own it) If living alone then $500 -$600 would be enough for a simple life.

Of course to my understanding $2000 @ both Phil-Thai can be conservative but not painfull Monthly to Monthly + Always Minim Savings $ 5000 = for ☔days:)

Wife (from Cebu) and I reside in NE Texas. Zero debt and it costs us $80,000.00 a year to live extremely comfortably in a 3400ft2 house in town, a 64 acre rural property,and a high end mancave for me. A 1 ton Ram, a 3/4 ton Ford.a Jeep, and 4 Harley's. Taxes,insurance,healthcare are our biggest expenses.Food is about $800.00 a month. So, I asked my wife if relocating to PI could be an option. She was explicit in saying NO. To replicate our lifestyle would be $60,000.00 a year and my passion of high speed Harley rides of hundreds of un-interrupted mile rides are not possible there.And the whole island thing is unappealing to me. Really doesn't take long to explore an island. Then what?Texas is a big freaking state and even exploring it would take years and years. Toss in the whole U.S. and it takes lifetimes.

If you already own your house and car free and clear in the Philippines, you can live super comfortable on 2000 USD in the Philippines. My monthly costs are the following Electricity for both of our houses is 120 USD My internet is 25 USD My Netflix is 20 USD My propane is 50 USD Our food bill is 800 USD And we buy alot of western stuff. So if you have a 2000 USD a month budget you live great, BUT I am married to a Filipina and we own all of our stuff outright. My retirement is 3200 USD a month after US taxes. So we live really good and bank alot.

A simp or weak man cannot live here for less than 2 to 3K. He will be supporting a high maintenance attitude, extended family, and generally pay dearly for sexual favors. Young people would likely not be able to make it on that, or at least not a happily, since most like to go out a lot and travel. I'd say you can do well on $1100 to $1500 (less for some) if you don't demand an extravagant lifestyle.

Why do people think that preparing fantastic home cooked Filipino cultural foods are akin to suffering. Must be a lot of guys in relationships with Filipinas who suck ass in the kitchen. We also prepare Chinese stir fries and delicious finger foods, barbeque meals, etc. If you don't know how to live or are lazy then you are going to spend close to what you did in your home country. I absolutely love being able to save a little over $2,000 dollars per month in the Philippines.

People define 'good quality' differently. Primarily from what I can ascertain is because they are able to strictly define the difference between a want and a need ? Many would obviously see some portion of your definition as 'extravagant' and not needed ? Apparently satisfied with various amounts of - less ? Certainly location is some of that too from what I can tell. - Yet - many are "living" on $800 - $1500 in various locations and seemingly quite content when compared to the US ! -- ? --
