Let's go inside 3 of the most popular grocery stores in Portugal; Pingo Doce, Continente, and Lidl. All three stores are in a close proximity and we're going to show you store layouts, items, and prices so you can compare and know better what your grocery cost of living will be.
Josh and Kalie from ExpatsEverywhere asked you on our community tab to tell us your top foods when you go grocery shopping. They complied a list of 20 items and went to three different grocery stores in Portugal to show you what the stores look like and how much these items cost. We know that food and shopping for groceries are such important parts of cost of living so it's essential to budget properly. They break down these costs for you and also compare the shops in Portugal to shops in the USA. How different do you think they are?
They start at Pingo Doce, go to a small but nice Continente, then finish at Lidl. You're able to see the different styles of the stores and what they offer. In addition to those 20 items, they show you other foods that didn't make the list but that you might be interested in. At the end, they show you the total of those 20 items. Did you guess correctly? Do you think you could find everything you need in Portugal?

I love grocery shopping and it's like a must do esp when travelling. I do agree with you when buying an item, there are not many brand options (apart from dairy products, rice, pasta and wine) and I miss having that option. I thought it was me so I'm glad you guys mentioned it. But I recommend having a Continente club card as the discounts can be generous. It's hard to avoid the walls of wine especially when it's so much more affordable than Australia, Singapore and the US. You guys said Lidl's more humble...I think grocery shopping in Portugal in general is humble while Lidl's prob most humble 😅. But Lidl does have good selections and I'm surprised you can get a lot more than in Continente bom dia. Lidl's my to go place while Continente's for the big shop. Just keep in mind that prices in Lidl can sometimes be cheaper than Continent. Eg. I pay 1 Euro less for mushrooms in Lidl therefore buy 3 for price of 2. Great share guys 👍🏻

@@ExpatsEverywhere Eggs dont need to be refrigerated, the milk that is not in the refrigerators is called long life milk and is the same all over europe,try to buy the meat from the butcher counter instead of the packed meat. We do have a lot of very good wine for €2/€3 as Portugal produces wine from North to South of Portugal, same for the olive oil big variety as the the Alentejo regions there is massive production. Lidl has some nice fresh bread everyday but i would suggest you trying to buy from a local bakery.

(Portuguese here) Guys you have to buy the fresh baking bread not those packed! In the USA there's a different process to preserve the eggs that's why we shouldn't put them in the freezer. LIDL is my favorite store actually not only because of the prices but the vegetables and meat are almost all from Portuguese producers. And also the central european stuff that they have is very nice.

Hi Kalie and Josh, I remember when I went grocery shopping for the first time. I must spent 15 minutes trying to figure out where the eggs and milk were hiding. Fun stuff. Oh, and Yogurt, I've never seen so much yogurt available in any grocery store anywhere.... one of them had both sides of a long isle, filled with yogurt and yogurt-type products. I was amazed! And, the yogurt I found was way better than any I'd had in Canada or the US! For me my top grocery stores were Lidl & Pingo Doce but I did go to Intermarche too. I didn't got to Continente that often. I have my favourite stores for different things. For example, I liked the bakery/breads at Lidl and for veggies, berries and fruit, I preferred Pingo Doce. With Lidl you browse more, looking for unique goodies and one-off specials. Agree about the seasonal specials items. Lidl is my favourite too!! (* the gas/petrol was cheapest at Intermarche, in my area. Much less expensive than BP or Galp).

Hi guys! Great video. Our favourite store is Pingo Doce. They always have great deals and PD brand products are excellent and cheaper than name brands. I saw people in the comments criticizing you for getting bread from the supermarket, I imagine what they are trying to say instead is that most people in Portugal prefer fresh bread as opposed to the more industrial long shelf live type you are buying. But you can find fresh bread in most supermarkets if you are looking for a healthier option. Lidl has excellent fresh bread and most locations have a slicing machine if you buy a loaf. Pingo Doce also has a great bakery and we love their fresh square loaf (brand name Pão Real) that comes sliced in the bag. By the way, we would never say Pingo as short for Pingo Doce, sounds odd. Cheers and enjoy Portugal and those amazing walls of wine! 😉😁
@ExpatsEverywhere
@ExpatsEverywhere 3 года назад
Cheers, Johnny. Thanks for the comment. We certainly knew what they were referring to. The two issues we have is that we generally don't eat bread so if we do get it, it needs to last a while and two that the audience voted on our community tab a while back about what items they wanted us to shop for so we compiled a list of 20 items. We visit bakeries more often than we'd like to admit, but we certainly don't get regular bread there. 😁 It's funny that you mention that about saying "Pingo" because we've seen several people comment the same thing however in the past week, we've heard 2 foreigners say just "Pingo". It's not a question of right or wrong but just people shortening it in conversation and possibly the word itself not having any relevance to us. Thinking about it, I like how you've said PD and I would probably say that to my wife. "You wanna head to PD or Lidl?" 😂 Love you comment, man. Appreciate it! Let's all enjoy those walls of wine and keep the consumption averages up. 🍷😁 - Josh & Kalie

This may vary from town to town but in general: Continente is the store that might present a more variable size from store to store: they can be huge in certain towns or locations (In Lisbon you will have at least 3 huge ones) and in those you will find a wider variety of products you can select from and they also have an Internacional aisle with less common itens and directed to specific types of cuisine. In this video you show a Continente - Bom Dia and, with that name, it is usually a smaller store than usual. The Pingo Doce stores are pretty much the same as you presented in the video and, in my opinion it has the best quality overall - fresh produce, butcher's and bakery - go for portuguese bread (yes, we are obcessed about that ); it is way less processed and a million times tastier!! The Lidl stores are also well represented with the one show in the video. I usually shop at Lidl because it's in walking distance and it has all the basic stuff and I only go to the other ones if I am looking for something really specific. If you have a bakery or a butcher's nearby explore those because usually you can get better quality and lower price; the same for the small mercearias and for the neighbourhood/town markets where the fruits and vegetables are usually better, cheaper and come directly from the farm.

Eventually I will get there to try it all on my own, but until then, thank you for providing this detailed view into basic, useful activities. I also appreciate all of the helpful additions provided in the comments below. You have engendered a community that wants to share the best advice with one another. Perhaps you've covered this topic before. Grocery shopping would be one of the activities I'd check out on an exploratory trip to see about moving to different parts of Portugal. Do you have plans to focus a video on recommendations for how to go about deciding where to live, an outline for how to get the most out of an exploratory trip? I understand that it's subjective--what would be a good neighborhood for me might not work for someone else. Porto is on my list (isn't it on everyone's?) to explore, hopefully this September. Continente has 2 types of shops: the Continente hipermercados (big supermarkets) and the small supermarkets, like the one you visited Continente Bom Dia/Bonjour, which I think are a little pricier. Besides those ones you visited, there is also Aldi (similar to Lidl, and also German), Auchan (same category as Pingo Doce and Continente), Intermarché (French franchising supermarkets), ELeclerc (French, I believe) and the newest, Mercadona (Spanish supermarket chain).

A couple of things to complement your video, Portugal is a big producer of wine, olive oil, rice and so many products we usually buy, that's the reason you have so many on those supermarkets. I'm not being paid but Continente is the one who have better quality in general, Lidl for example is cheaper because the products are low quality and they don't have the store arranged like the others, they have less employees and they work more like a street market, thing are over pallets on the ground. Overall we have very good quality products in the USA they prefer quantity over quality everything is bigger witch results in less quality. Very few European countries have the food richness like Portugal, Spain.

We used to raise chickens and its confusing for most Americans that you do not have to refrigerate eggs until you wash them. I like the fresh meat counters here, I'm not a big meat eater but there's a lot of variety, Turkey, rabbit... there is a good difference in some of the cereals, not as much sugar. @@alisonb9963 There is a Costco in Spain and a few expats do make the trip to shop there. You can also shop on line for the Spain Costco. No Walmart's and I'd be surprised if one showed up here, and I hope one never does! Portugal, like many EU countries promotes it's own economy, second they promote other EU goods. There are stores here that say "China" on the outside and when you step inside it's mainly Chinese merchandise, I avoided shopping in one my first year here because I want to support the Portuguese and the EU. I had no choice during Covids heyday (I was beginning a new hobby and couldn't find supplies near me) When I stepped inside I thought the place looked so familiar then it occurred to me that it looked like every Odd Lots I'd ever been in lol. There is a market called Gloods here that sells a few items from several countries. Aldi is familiar and they also sell a few Trader Joe items. ( same company owns both) Proctor and Gamble and Nestles have products here and of course there are brands we Americans have used that are actually EU based companies (Nivea) so if you cant read the language, familiarity and pictures help! I will say there is no shortage of food markets in this country. I live near the ocean in a little village that I can walk from one end to the other in 20 minutes and there's a large farmers market 6 days a week, a large grocery, and three smaller grocers so much food and these Portuguese people are all fit!

For later reference the exchange rate the day this was released was 1 euro equals $1.21 USD. Yes the US should have adopted the Metric system decades ago but... 1 Kilogram equals 2.2 pounds. So the cost for apples at Lidl was EU 1.59 for a kilo and that would be $0.87 USD per pound. Great content! Thanks guys.

The best ones overall and Continente (more variety) and Pingo Doce (a bit cheaper). But for variety you need to go to their biggest stores (the Bom dia ones are just for quick shoppers). And ALWAYS have their rewards cards and check their weekend promos (lot's of times they have a TAX off weekend 23%). Also always go to the market brand, they are both really good. FYI if you like cheese try Queijo Limiano (the real one not branded) kids just love it. Lidl is great for specific products. Cleaning stuff, dairy, and their very famous lasanha! And again, check their promos on the app. Aldi is very similar. For fruits and vegetables, if possible, go to the street market (Bolhao)! It's much fresher and a bit cheaper! Ok ones you have Auchan, Intermarche, Leclerc. Mercadona is new, but with good reviews for their branded products.

Always started at our local farmer's market for produce, stopped for a coffee and a Pastéis de Nata, then went on to both Lidl and Aldi (they were across the street from each other) for bulk goods, moved on to Continente for meats and any household or pharmacy items, then Pingo Doce for fish, then Iceland for a few British products, and finished at Apolónia for real cream (Creamo or Half 'n Half) for coffee and tea and a couple of very special treats. Portuguese here. Those supermarkets are located at the center of Porto, in a wealthy area. Stores further away from the center and near main roads tend to be bigger and have more selection of products, but you end up wasting more time to buy the same stuff. You may get better deals on fruit and vegetables from the specialized small stores, rather than the bigger supermarkets, if you happen to have one near you. Portuguese people have a thing about rice, so there are many difference types. Also the wine, each region has it's own and we try to match the wine with the food. Some supermarkets have cooked food to "take away", so if you have a very basic kitchen, this may be an option for a special good meal without breaking the bank. Venture into our local dishes, and be happy. I believe in knowing and tasting the food to really get to know the culture of the place. :)

Hello! I discovered your channel today. Welcome to Portugal and the best city, Porto! It is very rare, I shop in these supermarkets. My favorite supermarket became Mercadona, fantastic products. In some products it is cheaper, in others it is not. But the quality of the products is spectacular. 95% of them are "own brand". They do not do promotions, therefore, we know that the product will always have that price (sometimes there may be small price updates, this update can be more expensive as well as cheaper). I leave a suggestion, in Pingo Doce, the products of "own brand" (pingo doce), are excellent in the great majority and are much cheaper in comparison with the branded ones. Packaged bread usually has preservatives, buy bread at bakeries right at the counter inside supermarkets, or at street bakeries. Freeze the bread, and use it as needed, usually the bread thaws quickly (+/- 30 minutes) or a few minutes in the microwave. I don't think I forgot to comment. PS- I'm Portuguese.

That was a fun comparison. I live in Nazaré, and though we have a Pingo, it's in a weird location and a bit run down. We also have a fairly large Continente with a Lidl next door, both of which I like, but they are on top of a hill, so it's a bus ride to get there. I like that I can find unusual and seasonal items at Lidl, and they have the best fresh bread selection. I've never paid attention to the prices though, so I was impressed that they were also the cheapest. For day to day shopping though, I hit the markets in lower Nazaré: Spar, Minipreço, the Mercado Municipal, or even a couple of small, independent, corner markets. When in the States I might hit a large supermarket or big box store, for one or two stop shopping, but here I prefer to spread it out among the smaller, neighborhood shops. I ultimately find everything I need, but the experience is more personal, and I've even developed relationships with some of the staff.

You can probably get better deals at Lidl, but that's a bus ride away.... (during a mega-lockdown.... because of a pandemic). So I stick with what's nearby, and reachable by foot.

Lidl is great, I love going there in the US too, way cheaper than shoprite which is usually the cheapest and Lidl here is pretty much the same as you showed. Unfortunately there's no Lidl near enough to me to bother going all the time. Interesting to see that some things like cheap bread and eggs are actually more expensive there but pretty much everything else seems cheaper, meat was kind of hard to tell the price because it wasn't per pound or even killo, was that a per pack price? The fish was still pretty expensive but probably still cheaper than the US so I can definitely see how it's possible to spend a lot if you buy lots of meat and fish. Good bread does seem cheaper though just not the cheapo dollar bread unless they have that and you didn't show it, also pasta wasn't really any cheaper.

I wish you could also include the price equivalent in US dollars. 🤞
@ExpatsEverywhere
@ExpatsEverywhere 3 года назад
Thanks, Sofia. Problem with that is that it changes too much. The prices in euros will be more stable throughout the year. Check the exchange rate of the products at the given time your watching. That would be our recommendation. April 1st 2021 1 euro 1.18 USD but March 1st 2021 1 euro 1.21 USD. In April 1st of 2020 it was 1 euro 1.08 USD. On the date of the video someone did put prices in USD equivalent for people to reference later. Have you seen that? - Josh & Kalie

Wonderful video. Just wondering if you could comment on the availability of gluten free products. Are there gf options for pasta, flour blends or other types of flour like almond, millet or buckwheat. Are there specific sections of the store for gf products for example a Schar display or store brands of gf items? Have you seen any stores that might have them more available than others? Thanks
@SousaElder
@SousaElder 3 года назад
Yes. Normaly continente medium-bigger stores might have more variety regarding gluten free products - even dedicated sections. Pingo doce same. Lidl a little more difficult. You can find also alternative, i recall seing in lidl rice or alfarroba flour. I think there is a website also that helps you find more smaller stores with only gluten free products.

Hey John, thanks for the comment. It looks like Elder has cleared it up. There are also specialty stores in the bigger cities that have those types of products you're asking about. - Josh & Kalie

@@hellophoenix No. Lidl just started opening stores in the U.S. in the over the past few years and only in a few states. We have one location inside the perimeter in Atlanta on Briarcliff Road and two locations outside the city in the suburbs. I live in Midtown where the population has doubled since 2000. Lidl is my first choice for shopping. Much better pricing and good quality. I just wish there was a location much closer to my condo.

To be honest, we don't look for that stuff. What we can tell you is that Porto does a very good job of having vegan and vegetarian options around the city as far as restaurants go. We have vegan friends and they speak about having no shortage of options. - Josh & Kalie

Do the grocery stores have larger bags of rice--10 or 20 lbs bags? If so, approx how much? Of course, here in the US (Virginia, near DC) a 20lb bag of long-grain white rice costs between 12-16 $$, depending on brand & store.

Good question! We don't shop at any of the big stores. Kalie does want to go into the large Continente that we showed a quick outside shot of, and we can check there. We haven't noticed if there are any of the larger bags stacked on pallets or anything. - Josh & Kalie

i like lidl.. but... because of how they work, litle employes for the size of the store and thats why it looks like a dollar store, and then its the refrigerated stuff many many times i get stuff like ham cheese etc that is screwd it didnt passed the date but i guess they unpack it and it stays ouside for a wile and then goes again in the fridge in portuguese stores like continente and pingo doce you see the care that they put into refrigerated stuff not to get spoiled and in lidle its.. well sloppy but not just in portugal in croatia too that im living right now the same.. so i guess its because of the rotative sistem that they have to save in employes... and the other thing is that is more expensive the meat, in the other hand it has great quality in tools and clothes for children and babies and overall cheaper store to go to, but the quality besides the tools and clothes compared to continente for exmple is low, the best is to go to local market, better fish better meat and vegetables and fruits the rest you can go to a big store. my advice for shopping in portugal is as follows. go one day of the month to a big store and buy stuff that you use everyday or stuff for the house, lets say rice, pasta,sweets, olive oil, glue, tape etc and then everyother day stop in the market or frutaria peixaria padaria, on your way home with the stuff you will consume the next 2 3 days (exept the padaria you need to go everyday for fresh bread) but thats is to be portuguese go to padaria have a coffe and a cake and buy the bread for the day and then go about your business. and you'll save money like that because we always buy more then we need in big stores so is better to avoid them.

Do not ignore supermarket brands. Obviously these supermarkets chains don’t have their own production facilities, so it’s obvious their brands come from companies that already have/ sell their own brands. This may be obvious for many people, but what I’m trying to say is many times supermarket own brand products are as good as premium brand products, coz often they made by same company but different packaging. So never be afraid to try those brands as many times we find products we will love and it will be much cheaper. Not every product going to feel on par with the big name brands, but many will. Oh and Lidl unknown brands, so many of them are just amazing. I go to lidl on purpose to buy specific items.
