The REAL 2021 Cost of Living in Portugal (Porto) | Every EURO Spent! 🇵🇹

Josh and Kalie from ExpatsEverywhere tracked every single euro that they spent during the month of March 2021. They break it down day by day and give you totals, where they think the future of their spending will go, where they think they can save money, and where YOU can save money.
So just how far were they off their projected budget they had created before leaving the US? It's time to find out. They show you everything in hopes it will help you prepare for your move to Portugal.
These numbers are based out of Porto, which will be less than the cost of living in Lisbon but more than basically anywhere else in the country.

You're welcome, Kate! Thanks for the message. We have some good friend in HK and agree it's expensive. We've been there several times while we lived in Singapore. Our standard of living from a financial standpoint was better in Singapore, but we also had different jobs and in a way, we enjoy our jobs and work life balance here better. 😁 We didn't realize how much we liked it. Honestly, there was a lot of wine in there too. 😂 You know, we get asked as lot about the amount one needs to live here and we had waited for a while to do this video. We definitely noticed our spending pattern when we got here in mid Oct was to buy/try a lot of things we'd never had before (a lot food stuff). We also knew that after a few months that it would settle down and we would settle into our rhythm of life so we just kept waiting to actually track it. We're glad that the realness was felt because we want to be transparent about our personal spending to give you all an idea of where the number we come up with and say "This is what a couple needs" comes from. - Great to hear a bit about you and your husband. @@ExpatsEverywhere It’s super helpful! With COVID I think that everyone’s grocery bills have gone up...but less spend dining out. Sounds like housing is the biggest cost and the one we’ll need to do our best to manage as we intend to start our Portugal life in Lisbon. But we’re used to living small, so not really concerned. Did you ever consider bringing furniture from the US? Probably not worth it, but we’ll get some quotes just so we know what it would be. Looking forward to your explorations as things reopen! PS: Fabrica Roasters?
@ExpatsEverywhere
@ExpatsEverywhere 3 года назад
@@mariak3964 hi again. Yes, housing costs for something remodeled or new isn’t cheap. It isn’t living like a Portuguese although don’t be fooled by some posts by people Portuguese people aren’t all poor living on minimum wage. There’s a sliding scale like in many countries. Some Portuguese live in new construction and remodeled homes just like foreigners here too. You know? In Lisbon, housing is even more than in Porto so it could be a pretty large expense. Most everything else could be about the same. Fábrica might have opened up last week or it will this week, not sure. We went there two weeks ago and it was still closed. 😃

I found this video super helpful for setting a real-life expectation on cost of living. I would like to make a request (maybe you’ve already done this, but I didn’t see anything like it)... could you do a similar video possibly comparing costs of US to Porto products? Like, a latte at Starbucks in US vs Porto - or like how you went and got a Big Mac meal at McDonalds... and I’m sure there are other American companies there too. Be interesting to see how much, if any, there is a cost difference. Thanks again, I’ve recommended your videos as reference to so many people! When we go to Lisbon (hopefully soon, but still up in the air!) we will do the monthly transport and not worry about how many trips we take so I am surprised you don't do monthly, but I guess you walk a lot and that is good! Uber is so cheap!! Ya, the health insurance is a big expense and you should be able to do better...Made me thankful for my 35 euro/month insurance for 2 with 100% coverage and boy do we use it!! France is expensive, but our monthly budget beats yours so moving to Portugal and thinking it will be less expensive seems to be a dream!! Thanks for the great video!

You're welcome. Glad you found it informative. Thanks for the love. A friend of ours that we met in Korea (he is British Guyanese) made it for us. Yes, you can have two options for monthly card, in Porto or Lisbon is the same price. In Lisbon is 30€/month/person inside the city and 40€/month inside the city plus suburban areas (you with the 40€ can go to a few cities close of Lisbon, like Cascais, Setubal, Sintra, Loures, Almada. At least in Lisbon with the 40€/monthly card you can ride every single public transportation (buses/metro/trams/trains and even boats that cross the river).

I do think you can reduce your cost in groceries by buying in small groceries (expecially vegetebles and fruit), which are cheaper and have good quality. You also can find good wines and other traditional foods in the same place. For going out to eat, i recommend you look smaller and familiar restaurants ou dinners (you can pay almost half than in a big and central restaurant). You meaning public health care. After you have residency you can qualify to public health care right away. They have the right to ask for the SNS (Serviço Nacional de Saúde) number, and have access to public health sistem. I dont know but i bet they are using the SNS number to vaccinate the little girl, completely free and access to a family nurse if they have some little problem like rash/eczema (normal in babies/toddlers). The public health care have the same quality (even better) than the private health care. The big problem in public system have always the waiting time if you need a specialist doctor and is not life threatening. If you have a urgency you going to be treated right away, but if you dont have a life threatening matter, you need to wait for a specialty doctor. With the private healthcare you have access to a specialist doctor right away. But if you have a heart attack or a big accident the best for help you is the public hospital, they have the best doctors in emergency care. I do think have a simples private insurance (with low copay) is the best, i pay 12,99€/month from my bank.
@tamirose787
@tamirose787 3 года назад
Thank you for the explanation. I saw a video from another American Portugal vlogger in which their daughter had to stay in the hospital for 2 days. They went to the ER and were seen by a doctor within 5 minutes. Here in the States, I have waited in the ER up to 6 hours waiting for care for my elderly mom. When all was done, they had a hospital bill of $3.00. They had both private and public insurance but it was the public one that covered the visit. If anyone can answer....As far as having to wait for a Specialist, how long is the wait? We have waited as long as 3 months here, even with a "stat" order from the doctor. Thank you!
@arturjcrebelo3275
@arturjcrebelo3275 3 года назад
@@tamirose787 They had some luck, it depends of the urgency, the number of patients there, you going to wait one hour or even more with the green label because is the label without less urgency. My father had a yellow label and he wait only 15 minutes, and with orange and red label by law (you can ask for big compensation) you going to be assisted right away. But let me give one exemple, why a private insurance is a good option, my father had COVID in last November and because he feel a little tired and shortness of breath for the month of December (he never had need help from the hospital) he make one appointment in his local health center (family doctor) in January, and the family doctor prescribe him Bricanyl Bronchodilator (to help him to breathe better) and give him a form to go to Hospital Pulido Valente (public hospital in Lisbon very good in heart and respiratory diseases), he went there in January to give them the form, the hospital receive the form and by law need to find one pulmonologist doctor for him and he receive the appointment from a letter sent by the hospital in his mail a few days ago to go there in 29 April (almost 4 months of waiting for a specialist doctor). That's why i think the best way is to have a private insurance for similar cases. With a private insurance he only need to go to any Hospital that accept that insurance and they going to appoint you to the doctor there in minutes. See this private hospital and how it works (public hospitals are very similar to when you have the letter of appointment). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WtXMe2RKLAo.html

That’s $3600 Canadian dollars. Which is what our budget is about now for 3 people in Canada. I could see easily trimming that down especially on the food budget as I don’t drink alcohol or coffee or eat pastry and cook 90% of our meals at home. 100%, less expensive apartments can be found, however, there are several caveats that'll come with that lower price tag. Our personal recommendation is to pay a little extra, get a 6 month contract if that's what you NEED and then find a longer term solution once you're here. The first apartment we were in is now being listed for €1,090 (and we paid €900). We're currently in one that cost €700 and it's very similar to our first place, but we couldn't have gotten that deal if we weren't here dealing with an individual owner. Regarding your two things. We don't travel enough by public transportation to make a month pass worth it. It's €30-40 for the monthly pass. Restaurants and shops are opening today, hurray! Enjoy. There are lots of places with daily "special menus" for 7 or 8€ at workdays, meant for people's lunch break from work. Dinner out will be more expensive, but not the end of the world. This budget is good for a house in Porto center, and a comfortable lifestyle for 3+pet. Moving to another city, like Braga or Aveiro, would help saving on rent, transport would be somewhat higher. I have the impression the same apartment, in a nice area in Lisboa would cost a bit more to rent. The Algarve, southernmost region of Portugal, is at a discount due to covid lockdown. There, you can spend more on transport as things are far apart, or use a car, plenty of cheap rental car places there. Cheers!

You guys need go to Madureira restaurant eat, is location corner moreira st with santos pousada st , i think still open nice food , take out or eat inside, try and have a good weekend guys.

Can you make a video about emergency services (police, fire and EMS (emergency medical services)) provided in Portugal and how to contact them in case of an emergency? Are these services provided by career-paid/full time staff, volunteers or both? Thanks from Florida, USA

What is the difference between US and PT beer and what’s your favorite local beer PT health insurances cost 4 x less and I believe they cover other European countries - check their terms and conditions in the internet (best is multicare that allows u to have access in PT to all CUF private medical units
@ExpatsEverywhere
@ExpatsEverywhere 3 года назад
Great shout about the health insurance, again, Covid wrecked our plans. Domestic beer in US and PT is pretty similar. Bud product have their own flavor because of the beechwood, but the rest (Miller, Coors,...) all have similar ingredients and brewing methods so the taste isn't extremely different. The same goes with Sagres and Super Bock, however, we find Sagres to have a sweeter taste. We don't like it! We're SUPER BOCK 100%. As far as craft beer in Porto, Nortada is our jam. The beer for the craft beer scene is honest a C+ to B- or in that range if we're comparing it to various craft beers around the world. The craft beer scene in the US and Australia is crazy good. Canada has a great scene too. Europe is a bit behind when it comes to craft, however, the domestic beers in Europe are better than the US in our opinion broadly speaking. - Josh & Kalie

The price of the insurance….was it full coverage? I pay $1,1000, US. for a family of 4, per month, which is pretty normal. I’m a teacher and my school district pays a portion of it . The total is $1500.
@ExpatsEverywhere
@ExpatsEverywhere 2 года назад
It's not full coverage, but it's very robust and "would have" covered us almost everywhere we traveled (except the US), which we had hoped to use a lot, but couldn't. There's a link in the description section if you want to check them out. Alternatively, once you're here, you can get on a cheaper local plan. - Josh & Kalie

I'm wondering how frequently you spend this amount on your dog? What did you buy, can you break it down?
@ExpatsEverywhere
@ExpatsEverywhere 2 года назад
He's really small so we tend to only buy food once every other month for €10 (plus treats). He uses pee pads which we set out for him and spend maybe €5 per month. His grooming is €35 for a full-grooming. Flea and tick med is €7-9 per month. Does that help. - Josh & Kalie

Hi there. Can you PLEASE help me out with a question. Iv’e checked every website (Portuguese and American) in regards to traveling to Portugal in May. All of the websites keep referring to me about what I have to do traveling to the USA and not to Portugal. Do you have any knowledge if someone coming from the USA (with proof of Covid vaccination) to Portugal if there is still a mandatory 14 day quarantine? Anything information you have will help. Thank You.

Great follow-up on expenditures. Yeah of course there are some tricks that could also help reduce the expenditures in food shopping or food take away. Cool, that churrasqueira Cidade is good the Frango and Costelinhas (pork ribs) with arroz de feijão are great and cheap and with quantity. Btw that another very portuguese topic, the portuguese portions of restaurants XD. We (portuguese) always know or remmber what is the restaurant that serves best portions vs price. There is a good restaurante in that road that passes by to the left of the churrasqueira, Barcarola - you go further down that road and near the first crossing the restaurant is at left side. Have great "pratos do dia", cheap/delicious food of the day, and a good francesinha and pica-pau (is like a huge plate with diferent grilled meats and a "francesinha" style gravy at the side and you eat like tapas). Pre covid, they had big screens to watch matches and eat a pica pau and drink beer. Kudos on the beer, also there are other craft beers shops in porto and a craft beer pub called Nortada, near bolhao, which at its time held live music. Saludos and have a good desconfinemento process :D

Hey Elder, thanks for the detailed message. We've walked past Barcarola. It was closed last time we went by there. Nortada was our old "local" when we lived in Bolhão and before they closed their gastropub at the end of Dec. We have no clue when they're reopening. Anytime we're downtown, we check. All the best to you during the reopening as well. The city is already becoming more alive. - Josh & Kalie

As often as you buy beer, and you consider wine to be like any other food, it would be interesting to see how much you spend on just alcohol.
@ExpatsEverywhere
@ExpatsEverywhere 3 года назад
It's not that we consider it like food. We don't. It's that we buy bottles of wine from the grocery stores we go to and we weren't buying beer like that. We would just go to the shop down below us and grab a few cold ones. We've only bought a bottle of wine over €5 twice since living here for 6 months. We generally shop wines in the €2-3 range and at 2 bottles per week, let's say we're looking at under €30 on wine per month. - Josh & Kalie
