What were your thoughts on our final budget for 2 months in Romania, visiting 8 different locations? Have you decided to add Romania to your list of places to visit? We sure hope you have, it's high up on our list of places we have visited so far.
For as much as you moved around and ate out, I think you did really well regarding budget. And yes, we have definitely added Romania to our list, thanks to you two! 🙂
you paid a lot in rent, but that is because you stayed at hotels and airbnb's, a long term rent for a 2 bedroom apartment is betwen 300-600 euros in most places, but unfortunately they only rent long term.
We also paid more because it is the summer months and we stayed less than 28 days in each location. Prices drop up to 30-40% in the off-season and longer stays. That is why we decided to move around more than we usually do, the price difference wasn't any difference between the long term (28 days) and short term in the tourist season. Thank you for watching! Cheers!!!🍻
You did a great job on your budget given that you have many experiences 👏👏. Yes, I would love to spend few weeks in Romania in the future to learn about this beautiful country/culture and the people of Romania. I did not have Romania on my list of countries to see but now it is 😀. Special greetings to you both from Paris. Cheers 🍻
I can tell one thing: your videos about Romania mean a lot for us, the romanians. So a big thank you for what you’re doing! ❤ If you’re planning to come back and you reach Bucharest, our home is open for you guys.
When we were in Romania we rented a car. The countryside was gorgeous and we had access to places which were unknown to tourist (except French, they know all the secrets). Lovely country indeed.

Great video as usual. Impressed with how low the transportation and entertainment costs were. Really affordable. While the costs were more than some of your other trips, you did travel around more, saw lots of wonderful things and ate out a lot more. I think it was definitely worth it and Romania is now on my list of countries to visit.
Hi, Bruce. We did do a lot more than we usually do and it was also the tourist season. We really felt like we got more than we paid for and loved every minute! We do favor slow travel, however. 😆
You definitely had value for money. When we go away it is normally for 2-3 weeks and so we try to do as much as possible in that short time. So I totally get why you say you prefer slow travel. Especially in tourist season or hot.
We also can't do what you would normally do on vacation. We pick and choose what excursions we go on. We can't do everything that someone that has a job can do. We have a video coming out in a couple weeks about the ugly side of slow travel. It will be uplifting but will also give you a little bit of the reality of what we are doing. 🍻
My wife is a Romanian citizen and we are moving to Brasov in 4 years once my youngest is done with school. We just got back from Romania - spent 3 weeks there. We definitely spent a LOT more eating out than you guys did LOL! But we also took family and friends with us most of the time.
Brasov is one of our favorite places! With the mountains and other places nearby, it has a lot to offer besides the typical tourist attractions. Hiking, skiing, and just exploring the outdoors. Reminded us of home. ❤
Guys, that is a great budget for 2 months - Every time my wife and I go on the road , I always compare it to what we would spend at home had we not gone on vacation and every time going on vacation is less. All the utilities, insurance on cars, runs to the grocery store, going out to eat while at home, buying junk for the house. But I DO like " we do not buy stuff, because there is no place to put it) Y'all have put Romania high on our list. One thing helpful to the rest of us, do not put link to airbnb on your page because then the owners will jack up the prices, let people ask you via IM. Looking forward to your next video.
Unnecessary spending is key! We started spending less on eating out about a year before we left the states. Combine that with no car payments or car insurance and it really adds up!! 🍻

Thanks guys for visiting us and for showing everyone your experiences. As a romanian with a american born grandmother, I will definitely be visiting the US. My family was a middle class one and despite that, we still couldn't afford it, but now I feel that it's time!
@@16dya Why would you judge my decisions like that though? I am completely happy here in my adulthood, since the 90's and early 2000's things have really picked up not just for me, but for most romanians and although there are still lots and lots of things to improve, it is a very nice place to live in.

@@liviujivan5680 is not half truth. is the whole truth. after Bulgaria, Romania has a low level of life. Many people are having like around $300/ month in Romania. Which is not enough at all. Just money for rent. I lived in Romania until the beginning of 2006, so I know what I'm talking about. Now, in US, the economy is not what it used to be, but if I would have had the chance to come in US in 1992, definitely everything would be different. For tourists, Romania is a great country to visit. For loco people, not an easy life.
@@doriand4348 2006 until now is a long way, life in Romania has improved significantly, me and my family are also thriving and we're not at all exceptions from the norm.
Thanks for sharing guys! Great to hear you had a good time! The prices seemed higher than I expected especially for the accommodations. Anyway, Romania is still cheaper than most European countries and has a lot to offer for the dollars spent.
Hi, Sabastian. Yes, we expected to spend more on accommodations being that it was the tourist season, our first. We did think that we spent less in Romania than most other European countries like Spain or Italy. We did love Romania and felt that our dollar went a long way. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. Cheers!!!🍻
As a Romanian I want to thank you for your kind words about our country:) We hope to see you come back sometime soon! And yes, seeing the countryside is definitely worth it. There are all kinds of pensions with their own farms where you can hang out with the animals or spend time in the garden. Then there are places like glacier caves or big canyons...
Awesome videos, as always! I'm inspired by your experiences to visit Romania. Perhaps in a year or two. I can relate to the exhaustion that moving around a lot causes. We are enjoying 4 Portuguese cities over a 4-week period right now and have been careful to site-see just 3-5 hours per day. It's been a fantastic trip. Thank you for all you do!
Here you go!!! Thank you for watching and safe travels!! Cheers!!!🍻 www.airbnb.com/rooms/25577167?guests=1&adults=1&s=67&unique_share_id=dd265454-ecc5-4dd1-b137-f9f3ceeac973
Hi Brian and Carrie! Nice breakdown of costs and presentation.. I'm pretty sure you enjoyed the trip to România and you'll be back to explore the other side of the country ... as you said. Traveling by train is comfortable and cheap, renting a car is a bonus... like eating out 😃 .. If you want to explore more then just the cities you need a car... there's lots to see and do outside the cities, but the choice is yours of course. Hope to see you again next year in Romania 🇷🇴 Safe travels and good times in Croatia 🇭🇷!🥂
We will be back and will also be renting a car for at least part of the time. As you said, there's too much to see. Renting a car is a must if you want to see it all. Cheers!!🍻
Awesome review you guys. As a Romanian who came to Canada at 18, now 26 years later I am rediscovering my roots. Trying to go visit there twice a year - and having second thoughts about moving back there. Every time I go back I spend a buttload of cash - way more than here.
Great info. Thanks! I'll be curious after Sunny and I start following in your footsteps if we prefer moving around slow or fast. I have a feeling we are going to be like you and prefer the slower paced travel. But yes, it was awesome that you got to see so many different places during your 2 months in Romania. Thanks much for breaking down the cost of your 2 months there! And thanks for the bonus video this week! 🙂👍 See you next weekend! Cheers! 🍻
There is a balance between fast and slow travel. You don't want to become bored but you also don't want to burn out. It is really nice that we are on the same page and have the same idea of what we want. As always, thank you for the support! Cheers!!🍻
thanks for sharing your cost breakdown, I would say $2500/month for 2 people and moving around as much as you did visiting so many places is definitely very affordable.
We felt for being in the summer months it really wasn't that bad. The eating-out budget was high but we expected that. We have arrived in Croatia and will be mostly eating at home so we will see what the difference will be when we crunch the numbers here. 🍻
Great Summary Vlog of Romania. I like the way you present it like the Air BnBs u stayed and a brief flash back of the place etc. Overall under 42500 per month is not bad at all considering what all you got to do an enjoy. A basic even a down sized 2 bed room home will require a fixed cost of easily 1500 a month by the time you add mortgage, insurance, prop tax car insurance etc. Overall money well spent and enjoyed. Didn't realize Romania has so much to visit and experience. Surprised to hear that they had Thai and Indian food that would help me survive a bit easier being a vegetarian. Take it easy in Croatia and have a good relaxing unwinding time.
All very good points CM!! The Balkans are VERY meat heavy, but we have found many vegetarian places to eat. Non-alcoholic beer is big over here as well. Kinda strange...

Definitely rent a car, especially if you're at least 2 persons, and find a place in the middle of the country like Brasov, however try to avoid Prahova Valley's main road the DN 1 (E 60) in peak season or use Waze to see how the traffic on the road behaves, you can get stuck in traffic for hours there, another place like that is Constanta to Vama Veche during summer and the Highway (A2) at some hours from and towards Constanta, Transfagarasan is pretty crowded as well try getting there early in the morning. But otherwise rent a car, so many places that are amazing that you wont get to without a car, some of the most spectacular gorges in Romania can be seen using a car, and most of those won't even be promoted on any tourist site.
Hello Carrie, hello Brian! I’m going to have a mini marathon, watching your latest posts … I am at home for at least one entire week - I got the flu … and whatever one does, this ALWAYS lasts at least one week. If you would have visited Romania two years ago, all the expenses would have been at least at half … let alone ten years ago. It is so good to see you again. Thank you for your videos. Best regards to your friends and families from a Romanian brother.
Nice to hear from you again Kay!! Sorry that you aren't feeling well but I am happy it gives you the opportunity to catch up on our videos. 😀 We are back in the US now for the holidays and sticker shock on some items that we enjoy is real!! Everything seems to be going up. Thank you for commenting on all these videos!! Your support is noticed and very appreciated!! GET WELL!! Cheers!!
Regarding rent - there were touristic, central areas. If you rent a car, you could find cheaper accommodation few kilometers outside those cities or not right in the center.
We typically don't rent places right in the center, we usually walk a mile or two to any central location. Also, renting a car and paying for fuel would offset any rent that we would be paying if we were in a location outside of town. You just need to balance what is important to you. Great point though! Cheers!!!🍻
Hi guys what months were you in Romania I’m currently planning a 6 month trip and trying to work out the cheaper countries for the European summer months. Romania looks great thanks for your videos
glad you liked your trip. seems comparable to our stay in Serbia in terms of cost. the food, amazing views, and incredible people made us forget all about the cost. we both had TMobile phones that worked with their sim cards too. wifi was everywhere. leaving the city for the day to visit a monastery or go to a resort in the middle of nowhere was breathtaking.
We would say that the Balkans are all comparable in price. We are looking forward to going back to explore some of what we didn't get to experience. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. Cheers!!🍻
this depend of the area, in Cluj Napoca for example an 60square M apartment is around 100-120KEuro, also the monthly cost is higher compared with other areas. Basically in Romania you have a big difference between economical developed islands and the rest of the country
We had a great experience in Romania and plan to return at some point. It is a large country that we only had time to see a small percentage. Thank you for watching our channel! Cheers!!🍻
That's fantastic! Thanks for sharing your drone information! Also, I see below, a whole list of equipment you use. Very helpful but it made me think... why don't you put together an e-course along the lines of, "So, You Want to Be a Slow Traveling Global Expat." From making videos to doing research on destinations. I'm sure there are tricks armchair travelers like us would benefit from and would like to know the nitty gritty, whether we actually travel or not. And I'm sure you need something to fill all of your free time -- NOT. haha... so yeah, do an e-course or just a series of videos that wouldn't actually require you to travel anywhere. The whole process of HOW you do what you do, I think viewers like us would find fascinating. Sorry to be so long-winded here but we've become hooked on your easy going video style. Just wanted to share that. Ciao.
Hi Brian and Carrie! We are on month 9 of full time slow travel and Romania wasn’t on our radar until your vids, so much appreciated! Similar to you guys, we find it exhausting to be constantly on the move and would prefer to stay put in 1 place for a month. You mentioned wanting to go back sometime in the future, where would base yourselves?
Hi, guys! We will have to check out your channel!!! We would like to visit Northern Romania so most likely Iasi and move around from there. It may be a couple of years before we get back, so many places to see! Thank you for watching our channel! Cheers!!🍻
Hi. Love your videos and the cost breakdowns are very helpful! You mentioned Brian’s haircuts in your budget, but nothing for Carrie. My wife is curious what the cost for a woman’s cut and color might be. Thanks so much.
Hi, great question. I (Carrie) personally don't go in for cuts or colors, I just trim it myself as it's very thin and doesn't grow fast. I also gave up highlighting my hair soon after we left to travel realizing it was something I didn't want to keep up or finance on the road. I do know there are plenty of salons in every town we've gone that look great and modern and seem very reasonable. Using online search for reviews has worked well for Brian to find some good locations, but sometimes he just hops right in one were passing by.
Hi guys! Love the videos! We are hoping to start our slow travel adventure this year. Romania question: if you were going to stay a full month in any of the locations rather than bouncing around, in which town would you stay? Also, how was weather in summer? We’re trying to avoid the super hot heat spots.
Hi, Jeff. Brasov would be our first choice and Sibiu would be next. Brasov is smaller, elevated, and surrounded by mountains that are easily accessible to escape the heat. The temperature was in the 80s in Brasov and just a few weeks later it was 101 in Timisoara. Thank you for watching and safe travels! Cheers!!🍻
My husband is Romanian. We were married there. Absolutely beautiful country, very friendly people 😀😊❤! Overall, things like food and lodging are very cheap from an American perspective; however, clothing, electronics, baby gear is all the same price as in America. It is difficult for Romanians to make it in Romania financially because wages are very low. The reported average romanian salary is around $2,000 USD per month. Many Romanians have to leave and work in Western Europe.
We met a few locals during our travels through Romania and they expressed the same difficulties. Hoping that one-day things can change, Romania is a beautiful country, and the people deserve to stay. Thank you for watching our channel, Miruna. Cheers!!🍻
Thank you for visiting and showing a positive view of the country! Hopefully people will start traveling there and realize what a hidden gem Romania truly is 😃😊! I would recommend the coast next visit...Constanta is great and so are all of the beach towns near it. Historical sites in that region are amazing, Histria citadel and the Tropaeum are remnants from Roman rule and worth the visit!
I don't understand this type of comment. Why do you need to complain about how locals live, their wages, etc? These types of videos are primarily made for tourists wanting to come here, and they don't care what locals earn, as that information is of no use to them. So what's the point?
@@RaduRadonys I think it is important for a tourist to know about the people and place they are visiting 🤔. We should learn about the culture of a place we visit. Also, I want to highlight why Romania is considered "cheap" to middle class or upper middle class tourists from the United States or Britain, for example. It's cheap because the wages are very low. I'm not saying this to disparage the people but there are socio economic issues all should be aware of. I could tell you the same things about which states are cheaper than others, etc.
salary $2,000 per month? There are many romanians who work for only $300 per month. for those with high school only. those with college degree can have $900.
***Brian and Carrie, A Question, Please*** My husband and I have been settling in to cocktail hour and enjoying your videos for several weeks now. We love what you do and thankful for all of your efforts. Can you please advise us as to what kind of Drone you use? We are newbies -- want something simple, light, and not too "professional" that Customs and Immigration seize it from us whenever we enter a new country. Really very appreciative of whatever information you can provide. Many many thanks!!!
Thank you so much for the kind words and for watching our videos. We don't use a drone because of customs, and local laws wherever we may be, and we limit our belongings to carry-on only so we don't have extra room for one. We use Canva, a monthly subscription from which we get all of our "drone" footage. The link is in the video description below. However, If you would like a drone DJI is the best in the industry. Thank you again for the comment and for watching our channel. Cheers!!!🍻
Thank you for saying such nice things about my homeland. Next time you go, rent a car and go to Moldova and Mareamuresh where the Painted Monasteries are. It is amazing.
You say that is cheap regarding your US salary but if you make a comparison with Romanian salary will be a bit difficult for the Romanian workers that worked for 500$ pro month
6:34 as a Romanian, I might be biased, but taking that company's "private tour" would be a bad idea. They actually use big coaches w/ 52 people group, 14-16 hours instead of the 12 hours advertised, no time to enjoy the locations. If you're on a tight budget, sure. But for a decent experience, a private/small group tour or renting a car would be much better
From what you know now, is there one town you would choose to spend a month in if that’s all the time you had? Looking for recommendations. Maybe someplace where you could do several day trips to other fun sights?
We use Premier Pro. We will be doing a video in the next few weeks on everything that we use to shoot a video from start to finish. Thank you for always watching! 😀 Cheers!!
I am willing to move to Romania but without knowing how much the cost of living tthere, i am scared . I want to rent a studio flat which also not sure.
Rent in my city: 300-400 euros. Food pretty expensive: for us - 250 euros at least for gorcery. Clothes: at the regular brands (Zara, H&M etc) - cost is same as the rest of european countries; local shops - some more expensive or less expensive than regular brands. Accomodation(hotels, pensions) - prices have exploded during the pandemic and are comparable with the rest of european countries, but you can find some cheaper decent ones. Restaurant meals - less expensive than rest of european countries - with 8-10 euros you can have a good meal. In my city I can find a 3 course meal for even 5-6 euros.
@@damianlody It’s not…maybe it’s a bit more expensive now as the food got more expensive but a year back I got soup, second course and a small dessert from a decent restaurant, not the best, not the worst.
Those are the most expensive places in Romania. You guys didn't visit "Romania," you visited the most touristy places in Transylvania, which are the most expensive. There is 2/3 of the country that is more affordable and just as beautiful.
Hi, James. We use our cards 90% of the time. There are places that are cash only, for example, my haircut or small shops but there are ATM machines everywhere.
We use Epidemic Sound for all of our music. We save recent video music in a folder, but unfortunately, that one has been deleted. Sorry, we can't help, but thank you for watching and asking the question! Cheers!!🍻
We stayed in too many places to add them all to this video. We do have the Airbnb locations that we recommend in the individual videos that we did on each location. Thank you for watching. Cheers!!🍻
Interesting as always. The eating out budget did seem to be large. Rental car seems like it would almost be as much as your lodging. Wonder how much a small RV would be then? I just happened to download canva. Not sure what I will use it for.
That eating-out budget was high, even for two months. We would love to RV across Europe but the gas prices would kill us. We didn't have much use for Canva either until we started RU-vid, now we use it all the time. 🍻
Hello, I've been considering going to Romania for a while now. I know of Bucharest and Brasov but I want you to know that CC does not do a good job with foreign city names. Please consider taking a picture of the city sign or add text to your videos with the cith nome as you start to talk about them.I'd be real helpful. Try CC with you video yo see whatI mean.
Who pays 500 for health insurance Every thing these people did was to expensive 5000 dollars This video does not inform you of real costs Most people are not rich You can do Romania for 800 a month
That is a 2-month total. Insurance at $125 each is a bargain; In the US you would pay 4x that. We are definitely not rich so spending about $ 1200 each including health insurance is close to what you think it should cost. Thank you for your comment! Cheers!!🍻
It really depends on what you are into. We could see spending extended time in Brasov with nice summer and winter activities. There are plenty of things to do in bigger cities as well. The people are very friendly also. We prefer being close to the coast so it wouldn't work for us. 🍻
Guys, you stayed only în cities. That is not the way to visit România. You need to go somewhere out în nature, în the Mountains, farms, forests....Checkout Jetlag Worriors, they got it right.
We've mentioned several times in our videos on Romania how excited we are to return to see the rest of this beautiful country. It was our first time and found that the people are so welcoming and polite. We actually have Romania near the top of our most favorite places. Thank you for watching our videos and have a great day! Buy a car in Bulgaria and you will have a totally different experience, believe me we are doing it now for years this way. Way more freedom and authentic experience. Just a thought
That is a great idea. We know that we may miss out on some experiences traveling the way we do but we need to keep costs as low as possible for the next couple of years. Hopefully, we can open our wallets sooner than later!!😆 Thank you for watching!! Cheers!!!🍻
@@BrianandCarrie we bought a cheap car in Serbia ( we are from Australia) as my husband has also a Serbian passport. Here in Serbia they import a lot of old cars from Germany and Switzerland, which have much stricter rules for driving old cars. I am sure the same is happening in Bulgaria and I understood that you do not need to be a resident to buy a car there. Most EU countries require residence. Over a longer period, I am sure you will off set the money you spent on public transport.
$2400 on accommodation for two months is not much, considering that: 1) In Bucharest you stayed at what looks like The Marmorosch, which is one of the most exquisite places in town, and 2), you've been in Cluj, which is the most expensive city in Romania, especially in regarding to rents.
@@BrianandCarrie However, thinking about it... if you live full-time in one place, for example, Brasov, I expect it to be much cheaper than most European countries.
You would be paying less for rent that is for sure. We would have spent less if we were traveling in spring or fall as well. Summer month just cost more.
@@BrianandCarrie Happy to help 😀 It is difficult , especially for English speakers, to pronounce names in other languages. That is why it is good when you are exposed to other cultures. You learn! And you should not expect that other people know or speak English everywhere. Maybe a bit of French, Spanish,German or Italian would help knowing, when you travel especially through Europe! Love your videos!
Good video. We’ve decided that renting a car adds a great deal of enjoyment especially in places where public transportation is poor such as in Saranda. Moving forward, we will get a car when it makes sense like in our upcoming trip to Perea and Cypress where we will be in the boonies.
