Costco enforcing membership status at its food courts

Not just anyone will have access to Costco's popular $1.50 hotdog meal anymore.
There's a new push for Costco customers to prove their membership status to get access to the wholesaler's food courts, and those who have been paying members for decades have split reactions.
The new rules went into effect on April 8.

at the end, "do something for the community!" -- Yeah, how about all the scholarships, all the SALES TAX revenue, all the EMPLOYMENT & SSA taxes paid, all the road improvements, all the volunteer hours from employees???

What do you expect when Mcdonalds, Burger King, Jack in the Box, and Wendys are all like $20 per person now? People trying to get affordable food because Costco sells it affordably. Thank Biden for this inflation problem that just gets worse.

The food court has always been for paid members. I didn't realize that non members had been using it, but that would explain the long lines. These grifters have been abusing a loophole. 100% require a member i.d.

Understandable. And I can’t argue with the policy as a membership is just part of the game there. It’s just inconvenient because I usually send my teenagers over to the food court to buy their goodies while I check out in peace. 😊Apparently that won’t be an option anymore as I’ll need the card to checkout, and they’ll need it for their food.

I remember going to the Tukwila Costco when they had a hotdog court outside the entrance. You would also pick up your 35mm film from their too.

They CHECK your card at entrance!! You can’t enter the building without a membership card! 🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️

You can go to a QT Gas station and get that same deal. Sam's club doesn't require membership enjoy their concession stand and it still brings in income for the business so that doesn't make any sense you can't be losing that much money off non-members, of members who don't even purchase stuff from the food court. Unless it's me at Sam's club that's different Sam's club I purchase Costco their stuff is just nasty.

"Do something for the community".... like go out of business. Costco loses money on all that food, it's there to draw the customers in and be a convenience for it's customers. Non-members can do something for the community by buying a membership and supporting an employer. Screw it just walk out of a Walmart with everything you can stuff into a cart.

This stuff is so bad for you Costco is probably doing non-members a favor by enacting the policy. All that cheap soda, pizza, and hot dogs is not healthy.

We ended membership when Costco stopped taking cash and installed self service kiosks at Kirkland location.

I’m surprised to see outdoor Costco food courts. Where I live they are all indoors. It seems like a lot of the year it would be too cold to eat outside.

That Costco at whatever time that was, was not very crowded. In my former home the Costco there was overcrowded at the outside food court and a line at lunch could be 45 minutes. We could somewhat get a shorter line by ordering inside when we checked out. But even that line would be almost as long with only 1 teller dedicated to us and 1 to the walkups.

Costco isn't a charity, they're a for-profit business. Presenting a valid membership card prior to buying a hotdog and/or pizza, is at most, a minor inconvenience. These items are perks intended for those with a Costco membership, they are not a birthright.

Our local Costco was almost packed with homeless buying food last time I was there. And it sure wasn't the nicest smelling place to be at the time. So I see why Costco is doing this!

Lmao that guy at the end is an idiot stating "It's more than a profit! It's about the community!". Their food court has always been a loss leader for decades. If you buy their $60 membership and routinely get pizzas, hotdogs and rotisserie chickens you are already not a profiting customer.

Well you do need a membership to buy the same hot dogs or buns to take home so it's not to far out of line to need a membership to buy that plus a drink at a price you can't get anywhere else.
