I consider the NR6050 from CostCo to be the best value even at the current $500 price (with free shipping). I have also ordered one. I have a Onkyo TX-R820THX that had the center channel go silent a few days ago. It is 16 years old. It is still good at playing stereo.

This was a very good video. Hooked up a few systems in my lifetime and many times the manuals just don't cut it anymore. I looked at this video and another and between the two was what I needed for the basics. I wish he had covered Zone 2. I don't think Onkyo did a good job in the manual. The other videos were not this receiver but they did help with some things the manual did not cover or I missed. Think about covering the Zone. I am doing the Zone 2 out to another Onkyo Receiver to play outdoor speakers and can't get it to work. I had it working on my prior receiver until it crapped out this week. Thanks for this video

Good video...I love this unit I have it for about 6 months now. Works and sounds great. The blue tooth sucks but when I wana listen to music I just mirror my phone to my TV then go to apple music hit play unit switches over to TV and sounds incredible. Only draw back no preouts for an external amp to the 7 channels. Works great with the Samsung TV. Took me about an hour to get it dialed in with everything and all the different settings but about a week tweeking it to different sounds that I like. One thing the way you did the update is way to many steps. It takes only 2 minutes to hook up to your wifi and then it will automatically do the update via the internet quick and easy.

Thanks for this review! Since this Onkyo doesn't have a front 'AUX' (3.5mm) input on the front (like for ex, the TX-NR696), I'm wondering if plugging in one of those USB adapters that has the 3.5mm input will do the same thing (I like to use the 3.5mm 'output/headphone jack' on my laptop to connect to front of the Receiver...)

Have you tried switching to Mono Music, which outputs audio to all the speakers, and listening to the individual speakers. Also check to make sure speakers are not out of phase (wires crossed). Its normal for the rear speakers to be lower in level, unless you are in Mono Music. Hope this helps.

You can certainly use it as an audio only system, although I would just get unit designed for that purpose. For the price point of the Onkyo there are many budget FHDTV avail.
@JoshuaKnab
@JoshuaKnab Год назад
The real question is why not get an HDTV? They cost less than this receiver. You can get a brand new 4K Smart TV for $270
@jimholloman4457
@jimholloman4457 Год назад
@@JoshuaKnab 1) I have a Sony Trinitron that is great. It is reliable and does not have any of the problems common to modern televisions (read the many 1-star reviews on Amazon). The CRT produces sharp images that are very natural and realistic, more so that most flat screens. 2) I very much enjoy good music and good surround sound as well as multichannel stereo. I don't so much enjoy visuals. 3) I listen to music much more than I watch television or movies. 4) I like good quality equipment. So, a $270 TV would not do. If I purchased a new TV it would most likely be an OLED model. After you buy a TV, you need to have it calibrated if you want the best performance/images. A calibration can cost more than $270. 5) All my DVD's output 480p and 5.1 channels of sound. And, I am not a fan of extensive upscaling. I also get DirectTV that is 480p and I plan to subscribe to Netflix. I am told that the basic plan at Netflix is also 480p. 6) Once you get a 4K (or worst, an 8K) television you have little content available that is higher than 720p or 1080i. And, it is now nearly impossible to buy a HDTV that has a resolution of 1920 x 1080. 7) I see the UHD, 4K, 8K, etc. race as similar to the horsepower race in some automobiles. No one needs 500 HP in a sedan. No one needs an 4K television. Some of the AV companies are chasing specs because it helps sell the products; why buy an obsolete HDTV when you can buy a modern 8K TV? It wasn't long ago when 1920 x 1080 was astonishing -- everyone needed a HDTV. Now, everyone needs a 8K TV. Never mind that there is very little content. I would not be surprised if 8K proves to be about as popular as BetaMax, SACD, DVD-Audio and Video Discs (those big discs). What does tomorrow bring, 16K TV's with UHDR? 8) I am both frugal and eco conscious. I try not to buy what I call throwaway products. And, a $270 TV would be, to me, a throwaway product. I would not be happy with its capabilities, features, performance, and probably reliability. I am not a fan of edge lighting. And, how far off-center can you be and still see a good image? All my computer monitors are IPS rather than TFT because IPS is much better than TFT. 9) I ordered an Onkyo TX-NR6050 from CostCo. I also order a small 7-inch HDMI monitor from Amazon that I believe will allow me to do the onscreen setup and configuration. The monitor was $65.
@jimholloman4457
@jimholloman4457 Год назад
@@cfldriven I have a Sony Trinitron that is great -- and is all that I need on the video side. I am not a fan of upscaling and nearly all of my content is 480p. I understand that Netflix Basic is also 480p. The public libraries in the area have thousands of DVD movies and audio CD's -- but not a single Blu-ray disc. I will likely buy a OLED TV once the Trinitron fails. I like to buy good quality and keep things a long time. But, my wife keeps reminding me I don't need to buy things that are going to outlast me -- like 50 year chalk.

Why not put your center speaker on the first shelf instead of the bottom shelf? You will get so much better sound that way. Movies are hard to hear when dialog is coming from the floor. Ideally it would be coming from TV level lined up with your bookshelves.

@cfldriven Год назад
Josh, yes putting the center speaker closer to the TV would be better, but unfortunately the metal support rail underneath the top shelf does not provide enough clearance.
