That was very sweet of u to chat with "Grandpa" at the thrift store. I would have done the same. Lots of lonely, interesting folks out there. Anyway, I'm a sucker for candle holders. So, 👍 You found some nice things once again 😊

@@DressMeUpScotty That's great. You prob wouldn't have this experience anywhere else but while thrifting (but it's still rare). Although, it's possible at a craft store or hardware store! Glad you enjoyed yourself. It brings back memories of my own grandparents 😊

Thank you for welcoming me, as I -am- a new subscriber as of yesterday, and I am looking forward to relaxing and watching through a multitude of aesthetic playlists. 🌿 So my grandfather built their home in the sixties. It was the cutest two bedroom cottage with a loft and the kind of magical attic with mysterious doorknob and secrets within that dreams (and childhood memories) are made of. It's literally my dream house. When they both passed away around 2010 (my grandmother lived to be 101!) my family had a massive estate sale and the house itself was also sold. I was in my early 20s at the time and just a waitress back then, and I had no reliable income. I basically begged my family to let me buy it and make payments directly but it was not meant to be. My family can be a bit harsh like that. But I did pack up many beautiful items from that home, including the mysterious attic doorknob that I have displayed on my bookshelf, and someday that doorknob will be on my own mysterious attic door. ✨🖤
@DressMeUpScotty
@DressMeUpScotty Год назад
That sounds absolutely magical 🥹 so sad you weren’t able to buy the house but I hope some day you’ll be able to have your own magical attic for the door knob!

That's so sweet of you with that grandpa, and it's so weird how us neurodivergent people are able to just clock each other in one conversation (once we know that we're ND ofc or suspect it). My grandad was super thrifty, he used to be unable to resist hunting around in skips when he saw them😂 he'd turn up with something for me as a kid or a piece of furniture my parents might like and my dad would be like ".... Did you find this in a skip again?" My grandad would look sheepish, "No ofc not"(read my grandad's bits with a northern Irish accent) " *sigh* Well did you wash it at least?" "Well ofc I washed it!" And that's how I got my first bike amongst other things 😂

It was so nice of you to chat with the grandpa 🥺 Thank you for talking about grandparents and how important it is to talk to them and go see them. My grandpa was very creative, I think that'a where I get it from. He had a workshop full to the brim with stuff and he was always making something. I remember the smell and the vibe of the workshop, it was mysterious and slightly scary, but I have fond memories 💛

My grandparents helped raise me, I had a single mom who worked and when I was small put herself through nursing school. I never had babysitters, I just always stayed with grandma and grandpa. I was also their first grandchild so I was definitely favored. I have such good memories with them, they were both the kindest, most loving people. I try to have those qualities too, to honor them. I miss them so much but I'm so grateful they were both such a big part of my life! I am certain my grandpa was neurodivergent too, he was a very quiet man but very intelligent and self-taught. He read constantly. He knew how to fix everything. He had to leave school in the 9th grade during the depression to go to work, but he knew so much about physics, trigonometry, calculus, chemistry, history. He had special interests in all those things. I think my grandma may have had ADHD. She was a social butterfly, could talk the ear off anyone, and literally could never sit still even into her 80's. She was always involved in so many things despite being a traditional stay at home wife and mother of 4. She also taught Sunday school, babysat other children, planted and tended a huge vegetable garden every summer, ran and organized church functions and prayer groups, cooked food for church functions and people's weddings, showers, graduations, etc. She was always busy, always taking care of others, and always cooking and feeding people.

Perfect timing for a new video! I’ve just had the most stressful week and chucking on your content while I’m working keeps me focused. I loved the discussion about talking to your grandparents. Another reason is because you might find one day you’re no longer able to. I spent a lot of time with mine as a kid, but as I grew up and shortly before my Nana passed away, I hadn’t spoken to her in quite some time. I always regretted that. One of my cousins mentioned at her funeral how she always knew what you wanted to talk about. Even if she didn’t know much about cosplay, she’d always ask me about it. And apparently she asked my cousin about makeup when that’s not something we’d ever discussed but it was something my cousin loved. She was very considerate like that.

You’re so right! When my grandpa passed it was very sudden. He was in his upper 80’s but still very active so it caught us completely off guard. They lived next door but I didn’t go over there nearly as much as a should have during those last years.

Sadly, all my grand parents have also passed away, and I would also encourage people to talk to them while you still can! I very much miss my grandma and grandpa on my mothers side. Me and my grandpa would go for walks in the forest and we made a small hut and small tables and chairs that we put in the hut. I was very fascinated by moles (the animals) as a kid, and we used to imagine that a mole was living in our tiny hut. I also remember my grandma making clothes for my dolls using her old clothes, and I think this is partly what inspired my own creativity. I also used to work in a nursing home where I talked a lot to old people, and they have so many unique stories and experiences that our generation will never have. Some might have been alive during WW2, some might have experienced famine and depressions and well, life with less technology. They are worth listeining to!

I love hearing old people's stories. I heard about an old man who lived on a mountain in Africa and it was freezing by the time he finished work at night and an old lady telling me what our town used to be like. My partner's grandfather had a really interesting life and it's a shame he passed before anyone got to really record his stories. He loved rescuing things from the trash and was possibly a bit neurospicy. He had a partial missing finger from a woodworking accident.

I only grew up with one of my grandparents but she was amazing. She would always have some sort of candy or cookies for me when I went to visit her. Used to hang around at my grandparents every week end. (Or at their house or at the cabin they had in the woods that grandpa built.) Honestly my best memories of when i was a kid : every saturday we'd eat fried chicken, candy and chips while watching wrestling on TV with grandpa (not my idea lol) or when we'd go walk in the woods near the cabin to see wildlife. Grandpa unfortunatly passed away some time ago and my grandma passed away a few years later. (We're pretty sure she missed arguing with him too much, I'll be honest 😅) I swear we found so much candy hidden everywhere when we clean the house out after they passed away. Grandma was diabetic, and yet we found so many stashes of chocolate covered marshmallows hidden under floorboards... 😂

I feel like the pyramid/candle cover is supposed to be a Christmas tree! At least those were the vibes I got. On the note of grandparents: I grew up with three grandmothers (two plus a bonus) and was closest to my bonus grandma but she and my grandpa lived far away, so I didn’t grow up with that stereotypical “get spoiled” grandparent. So sometimes I don’t really get when people talk so fondly about theirs. But now I live next door to my husband’s grandmothers and they spoil my daughter, so it’s pretty cool :)

thank you for acknowledging that grandparents can be narcissists and sources of trauma too. I was sad at first when you mentioned talking to them more often bc people tend to refuse to hear about the bad situations or to believe those who are estranged from grandparents for good reasons. they tend to compare to their own grandparents who could never do such a thing, but not everyone got dealt the same cards.

Yes, talk to your grandparents while you still can. I was practically raised by my maternal grandmom, and she taught me so much. Literally every craft I know I learned from her. I visit her regularly still, but she suffers from dementia, so you can't really have an 'actual' conversation with her anymore, she just tells all these bonkers stories that don't make any sense. But I still love just hanging out with her, and she's actually really hilarious in her dementia even though the illness itself is tragic.
