Harrier pilots wave goodbye to the crowd of fans who have come to see the last all British front line fighter before it's taken out of action after it's 41 years of distinguished service. Taken on 28/10/2010 shortly after their early retirement was announced and shows various methods of take off and landing at RAF Cottesmore (also closed shortly afterwards). Featuring nos. 77A,14A,94,45A,19,69A,57A,08.
ps. All of these aircraft were retired on 15/12/2010 and have been broken up and sold to the USMC for spare parts except for ZD433 45A (note the Afghanistan mission markings on the left side) which has gone to the FAA museum at Yeovilton.
Other aircraft saved (not shown here) are,ZG477at Cosford, ZD319 at Wittering and ZD461/51A at the IWM.
Update, April 2012 - all of these aircraft (apart from preserved) are now at AMARG (the boneyard) in the Arizona desert. (Info. thanks to das at www.fightercontrol.co.uk/forum... ).
Visit this site to see the Harriers now. / 193404834041207 A 578th Storage and Disposal Squadron employee cleans the canopy of a retired British Aerospace Harrier GR9, preparing the platform for storage at 309 AMARG. Fifty-eight air frames, sans engines, will be utilized as a source of spare parts for the U.S. Marine Corps AV-8B Harrier II fleet.

I am one lucky guy to have spent the majority of my life up close and personal with these aircraft. My father was a Chief-Technician in the RAF based at RAF Cottesmore and I used to go up to the squadron after school and sit and watch the guys working on them. Used to climb in them and chill out with the air/ground crew. so privileged.

1. I don't vote for any of the major parties because I don't think my vote counts and the major parties never stick to their campaign promises. 2. This country is hardly over-run with Muslim extremists. There are a lot of Muslims in some areas/neighbourhoods who keep themselves to themselves, respect the British way of life and don't force their religion on us. And that's just fine. The vast majority of Muslims in this country/the world are people of peace. There are some extremists but you get those few small minded people in everything. Politics, religions, protest groups etc. The good far exceed the bad.

I live in a village not that far from cottesmore I can see the base from my bedroom window and it's so quiet over the village now the Harrier was and is still my favourite jet we get the odd tornado doing a low flypast and hear the americans dog fighting above but still nothing like the Harriers flying over :(

Appitemy of flexability. True multiple from nuclear bomber, CAS, recon, precision strike, air to air from land and sea. And people say the harrier was a cheap poor man's make do aircraft! It's an everything I can do aircraft. Let's hope the JSF is up to it. Also, people slang off JSF but don't forget how long it took harrie R to master and developed the aircraft for all variants and roles. Also add stealth, super cruise and electronic warfare to the list! Hats off to Lockheed martin

For me, as a Dutchman, the Harrier had its greatest moments in the Falklands war. When they were up against argentine A-4 Skyhawks and Aerospatiale Super Etendards (among other types). It is a pity they had to be fased out before a successor is in operation. And we have to wait and see if the F-35 JSF will actually be what its manufacturer promised. I have my doubts (The Dutch AF also ordered 2 prototypes, but if the final order for the restwill also be granted?)

You are right... Wow.. That sight is a damn sad one. I would have hoped that they would have flown and loaded the birds on a landing craft. The sight of the palitized harriers is really sad and heart breaking. It reminds me of when they de milled the F14. Sad...

suggestion only why not put av8b on our new carriers untill they know whats going going to happen to the f35 they could lease some av8s from the us just to fill the gap no point in having carriers stood in dock waiting for aircraft cant see the f 35 being ready on time anyway i think the navy might come up with this idea in due course the news papers would crucify the mod if those carriers were docked.......

I don't see why the USMC would need Harriers if they're just going to replace it with F-35s. I mean yeah I'd like to see the Harriers in service a bit longer even if it is with the Yanks but I don't see why they need to buy it though.

The F-35's are having development problems & cost over-runs, with full production delayed, possibly for years. According to the USMC Times 74 UK Harriers, built between 1980 & 1995, along with spare parts were purchased for 50 million dollars. They are in serviceable condition & needed to replace the Corps aging F-18D's, not Harriers. The first Marine F-35B squadron already is slated to replace an F-18D unit.

The USMC got a chance to get upgraded Harriers from Britain. They will not be used for parts because many parts from the British Harrier are better than the US variant. The Engines from the Brit harrier are more powerful and the radars or terrain navigation is way better than the US variant. The UK birds will replace an F18 unit. Many exchange pilots from the UK will be very happy to fly their old birds. The F 35B will not be on line for two more years. or more....

"They will not be used for parts" Incorrect. "and the radars or terrain navigation is way better than the US variant." The British Harrier IIs weren't equipped with RADAR.
