And I BELIEVE AT LEAST - WELL! If not be a top level MMA fighter, if he so choose. He was breaking new ground when there wasn't any ground - it's not fair to compare what he was doing back then, with no real platform for application or testing, he chose to express his many theories via film. God, I hate Bruce Lee talk because now we have the fanatics who think he was invincible, and then the opposite end of the spectrum of idiots saying 'he was just an actor'. Essentially, Lee's hypothesis of fighting has in a sense been proved in MMA. He was definitely a visionary, and inspired many fighters of today's age. How would prime BL fair in the UFC? Probably not very well if he couldn't defend a takedown. However, with training and time, given his ridiculous work ethic, I'm quite sure he would have done very well. Chael, you refer to Chuck Norris as real because he competed, yet he competed in point karate. How about Joe Lewis, considered the godfather of kickboxing, who BL became affiliated with and soon after Lewis went on a huge win streak, becoming the champion. Then there's Mike Stone, and Gene LeBelle. Anyway, what we know: - he had great technique, as observed through film and demonstrations - he had the knowledge of many martial arts/fighting. Why would world champions train with him if he had nothing to offer? - he had the physicality - he grew up in street fights in HK, so he wasn't a stranger to a fight What we don't know: - how well he could apply his principles in an actual fight - how well he could take a punch I think if he was around today, he would be working with and training many top UFC fighters.

Bruce Lee was one of those guys, he spent time training as a monk in a Shaolin temple. He then went on to enlist in the Marine Corps in 1972, and received training at Parris Island. The dude is hardened to the bone. If he were to be a fighter in MMA today, he would be smart and disciplined enough to train with the best, top tier MMA practitioners and fighters, and exercise his variables in wrestling, Jiu Jitsu, boxing, kickboxing, etc. He must've been very fit and well conditioned back then when he was training regularly, so I feel cardio wouldn't be an issue, as a matter of fact his cardio would be insane. You're right on the money, Chael. Bruce Lee's philosophy was very simplistic and straight forward but that was his point: to inspire people to take the most "simple path" to success in combat. I think that the fact that he didn't join competitions was his choice. He felt the competitions had limiting rules and didn't actually portray a real fight. I think he would've actually enjoyed what the UFC has accomplished. Many world champions that did compete (Chuck Norris, Joe Lewis) would seek to be trained and train with Bruce Lee; I don't think they would have the same respect for someone like Van Damme or Segal or others that haven't contributed much to MMA. Bruce Lee himself knew that the biggest argument against would be just that, "but he didn't fight" so he even addressed it and responded "if I say that I am good, you will say that I am cocky, but if I say that I am no good, you know that I am lying" Check it out, from a multi-time World Karate Champion and the first Kickboxing champion, Joe Lewis (min 4:10) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AXdG577px94.html

It was a burnt clay brick which is the same kind that is used to build houses. My cousin walked up to Bruce and he said, "Sir, no offense, but if you're for real, then you should have no problem breaking this brick." He then handed it to Bruce. Chuck Norris and Joe Lewis (the Karate Champ, not the boxer) both said Bruce Lee was a handful in sparring. Also, after meeting Gene LeBell, he started incorporating grappling in his arsenal. If you watch the beginning of Enter the Dragon, you'll see Bruce sparring with an opponent, both in tight shorts and gloves that allowed for grabbing. Looked very similar to what we call mma today. He was way ahead of his time; his vision of what mixed style, competitive combat should look like is basically what we see in the UFC. In the film, we see him land some strikes then take his opponent down and tap him out with a crucifix. Lee may not have been a professional fighter but he was a martial artist who emphasized full-contact sparring, cross training in other systems, strength and conditioning training at a time when that stuff wasn't popular in the martial arts world.
Bruce Lee charged $275 per hour for a one on one lesson. Chuck Norris and Joe Lewis were his pupils and paid to be trained by him. They both won the world championship AFTER being trained by Bruce. You should do your research Chael.
he charged movie stars...Chuck wasnt his student and Joe never paid for lessons...Bruce wanted to be associated with Joe. Both of them were already champions before they met Bruce.
Bruce can also train like any other fighter. He's a freak of an athlete, more so than Reyes, so if he fought, definitely had a chance to become champ to the highest of levels.
Have to realize that bruce was the first to mix martial arts but he did not grow up in this new style. That being said i think he would do well in his weight division.
Thank you for being realistic and telling the TRUTH Chael Sonnen! Actors are not real fighters these people have no fight record they don't deserve to be considered fighting legends. You can be a legendary MMA influencer of the highest degree like Bruce was (because of his legacy not because he was a good fighter) without actually being physically a top tier fighter which he wasn't.
There are a lot of problems when considering Bruce Lee as a great fighter. There is no video of him in a full-contact fight. Not even one and I looked. What we have from him are movie fight scenes, demonstrations, some light sparring and some training footage. The training in his backyard is not impressive. I would not go as far as Chael Sonnen to say he didn't fight anyone. I count underground challenge matches as real fights. If Bruce Lee had fought Chuck Norris in a full-contact fight in his backyard and filmed it I would count that as evidence. If you beat a Karate world champion in a full-contact fight you are on their level. Instead for Bruce Lee we only have stories of him getting in real fights. The Wong Jack Man fight was not filmed and eye witnesses give different accounts of the outcome of that fight with some saying it was a draw and others saying Bruce Lee lost. Beating a Kung Fu master who didn't compete in tournaments is also not impressive. The fight with Yoichi Nakachi in Seattle also not impressive. Beating some random Karate Black Belt on a YMCA handball court is not a significant accomplishment in the world of fighting. Even if Bruce Lee won by knockout in 11 seconds like Jesse Glover said we don't know how good Nakachi was and there is no video. A lot of Karate Black Belts got destroyed in the early UFC events. The Mixed Martial Artists competing today are much better fighters than the ones that competed in the 1990s. Bruce Lee won one official competition winning a high school Boxing tournament and beat a boy named Gary Elms. Some people questioned the existence of Gary Elms. I have seen pictures and records that the fight took place but winning a high school Boxing tournament does not mean you are world champion Boxer or mean you can beat Top 10 Boxers in their weight class. The testimonies of friends are highly questionable. I do believe that Bruce Lee was a highly skilled Martial Artist just like Jean Claude-Van Damme, Michael Jai White and Jet Li. I also believe that Martial Arts actors can fight on some level. They are not push overs and they are better fighters than your average man who doesn't train at all but they are not the best fighters in the world. You become the best by beating the best. Jim Kelly said that Bruce Lee was untouchable in sparring. I didn't see it. I only saw him look good in movies. There are stories of Bruce Lee getting beaten in street fights in Hong Kong. His own brother Robert said he lost fights so he was not unbeatable. He was a talented Martial Artist, highly intelligent and highly influential. He was a pioneer but I think there is a lot of bias from friends, family and fans when it comes to how good of an actual fighter he was. He weighed about 132 pounds so if he was to fight in Mixed Martial Arts he would have competed at Bantamweight or Flyweight. No one in their right mind says that fighters that small can beat Heavyweights or even Lightweights so there is no reason to believe Bruce Lee could do it. I think that if we brought Bruce Lee from 1973 magically back to life with no preparation and had him fight the Top 10 in his weight class he would lose to everyone in the UFC. But give him 3-4 years of training at a good MMA gym and 10-15 warm up fights against progressively better competition and I think he could be competitive and maybe even world champion.
is this a real question? name a fucking fighter or someone that can kick a 700 pound punching bag other than bruce lee. bruce lee would kill those mma fighters
Dear Uncle, i totally respect your opinion Unfortunately I totally disagree with you completely, Bruce Lee had unprecedented Speed and accuracy, look up the video Bruce beating a ping pong master using his Nunchucks! If you're going convince me that a knuckle head like TJ Dilashaw or this midget triple C would beat Bruce? Thats a JOKE!
He had phenomenal power too - and all his contemporaries who sparred with him were in awe. He might've been vulnerable to supreme wrestlers - but what striker isn't?
Bruce lee did train grappling, it's in his book also it's known that he won a boxing tournament in his early age and on RU-vid you can see him fight blindfolded , also most of his kicks where real kicks , Bruce lee trained like a maniac , the dude had his own abs exercises invented , also imagine if he had modern tools , also he probably has lots of streets fight, who wouldn't challenge him back in the day
@@TopGap415 this. There are so many uneducated people in the comment section. When you do actual Research you find out he studied all ranges. There weren’t an holes in Bruce lee’s game. People keep pulling at straws and discrediting him. It’s very sad.
@@axelstone3131 yes , and the only reason they do it, is because he's dead ,, when people die. , People online shit on them because they can't defend themselves, these are cowards
Bruce Lee actually trained in both stand up and grappling arts.. but he wouldn't beat any modern professional MMA fighter at 125 / 135 / 145. Though Bruce probably could beat some regional fighters of a similar size. Bruce definitely could have been taught to become an MMA fighter with his base skills, that's for sure. Like if you threw a prime Bruce Lee into AKA or ATT.. in about a year or two.. I wouldn't want to fight him.
Absolutely. He may have actually done okay with his existing skillset as long as he got to spar in the usual 6month build up to a fight. If he had competent MMA guys sparring him for six whole months I'm sure he would figure a lot of basics out like simple double legs, how to sprawl, cage defense etc. We should also remember that the way he acted fighting isn't necessarily the way he would attempt a real fight. He obsessed over footwork of martial arts like fencing and western boxing. Who's to say he wouldn't have attempted some Dominick Cruz type movement?
@@INeedJesus55 he won a boxing tournament, and he trained people that went and got belts man , he was black belted in judo , the dude with modern tools would smash anybody Because his work ethic was mad
Anyone who’s fought understands offence is only half of fighting. Being able to handle a punch or fight through a fractured face or jaw is something Lee never proved he capable of. Nit a fighter he was a Martial Artist/Actor.
@@cherobinson6371 he was in a boxing tournament , he done multiple tournaments of karate , the karate tournaments are online , also if you where Bruce lee back in the day, you would have been constantly challenged, and he was , he was in lots of streets fights , so you just call him an actor but, also he done tons of sparring so actually you believe he is just an actor , but no you have some brain damage , there was no one that would work harder then him you clueless person
All of the better fighter than you are thinking that Bruce Lee could be a champion but u think that Bruce Lee is just a talker and actor. You must be deluded.
"His philosophy was no where near as sophisticated or as intelligent, as his pot smoking fans will lead you to believe..." Joe rogan would like to know your location
I think Bruce Lee would do well with his athletic ability and his obsessive work ethic. He would stay in tip top shape year around and would have been the ultimate student of the game I honestly think he would be a worthy champion
Chael. Get real. Bruce Lee would demolish Kevin Lee and his ilk. And he''d get you to turtle right up. He might have trouble with a bulldozer like Dan Henderson. But for the most part he could dispense with nearly all the contenders of today and the recent past in ALL the weight classes. He had power - speed - knew no fear - and was endlessly creative
MMA fighters have really inflated egos. Joe Lewis was a 11 time champion who trained under Bruce Lee and so did Chuck Norris. Joe Lewis accounts that Bruce Lee was far beyond anybody at the time, and could hold a 75 pound barbell straight out and hold it for minutes on end.
Could Bruce Lee beat the modern MMA fighter? This question is never going to find its answer, as Bruce had lived in 70s. As for the opinions regarding his fighting skills Chael has a right to have his own. I prefer to accept the opinions of champs like Anderson Silva or Conor McGregor which is completely opposite to what Chael says.
Bruce Lee was a mixed martial artist. He trained with gene labelle and many other grappling specialists. He believed you had to be adept at all areas of fighting.
The true question is, If bruce lee was in his prime and there was the knowledge and development in fighting we have now, would he have trained in mma? Yes he would. Would he have been an mma champ? Who knows, but with his dedication and iq he would have given a good fight.
Bruce Lee’s greatest assets were his speed and his mentality. He would have done great in mma. Even at the time of his prime he trained in multiple disciplines, including grappling and his strength and power for his size was incredible.
@@postersandstuff a far better grappler than inosanto or ing sick... all you have to do is watch his grappling in his movies.... he is terrible. no grappling at all. bye now cultist.
naysayers also exist in bruce lee era, they are the same as naysayers of today, the difference is, bruce lee is alive and can answer back any challenge. he silent those naysayers in his time, the naysayers of this day can bla bla bla knowing their jaw is safe because the master is gone. 😃
No you’re wrong. Do you consider Joe Lewis to be “a fool” who didn’t know martial arts? Lewis was a greater fighter than Norris. He won more heavyweight karate championships and went on into full contrat karate. He trained UNDER Lee and credited him for some of his success. He said on film that Bruce could punch like a heavyweight and was the fastest guy he had ever seen. Lee did not compete becasue he said any competition would have restrictions on what moves could be performed and was therefore not the real deal. But everyone in the martia arts world in the USA at the time - including big shots like Lewis, Mike Stone, Jhoon Ree etc. etc. looked up to Lee and his techniques and philosophy AND respected his ability.
“Lee didn’t fight because he was too good and would’ve killed people and he wouldn’t be allowed to compete because he’s too good” heard that from every guy I’ve ever run into at the bar💀 there’s an old quote, don’t remember from where though, that says if you’re naturally 6’7 with a 40 inch vertical and good coordination you’re not just gonna pass up on playing basketball. If you’re setting records in weightlifting, you’re gonna compete. If you’re the best in the world at something, you’re not just gonna pass up the opportunity to compete at it and prove how good you are
I think Bruce Lee in his prime would have been a good Featherweight competitor, but idk if he would actually win championships. He would have a hell of a time gaining weight.
Yeah I think he would have done pretty well. He would probably need to catch up a lot to where the game is now. But he was a lifelong martial artist so maybe he could do it. He knew his shit when it came to striking. You also can't really teach speed, it's something you kind of have or you don't. And he had it.
The 125 and 35 pounders we see now are amazing. 15 years ago we didn't see guys like Bruce Lee. I think he would have trouble now, but I think he'd be a competitor 10-12-15 years ago. He doesn't get the credit he deserves because he was just in the movies but you could tell by the way he moved that he was a serious athlete. When the 125 pound division first formed in the UFC, I think Lee would of been in the top 10 easy
There seems to be a lot of people hating on Bruce Lee in the comments saying things like 'he was just an actor' or 'even an average MMA fighter today would've easily beaten him'. I doubt that very much for several reasons: 1. I've never heard of anyone else other than Bruce Lee to weigh between 135-140 lbs to be able to hit as hard as a heavyweight-according to multiple heavyweight kickboxing champion Joe Lewis. He and Chuck Norris (middle weight Karate champion) both said their fighting improved very much under Bruce Lee's tutelage. 2. He was unmatched in his knowledge of the history of Martial arts (He had an extensive library with over 2,000 books on fighting). Does anyone who is 'just an actor' possess that amount of extensive knowledge of the martial arts? No. 3. He is the only one I've seen to be able to execute perfect form doing multiple one finger push ups at a karate tournament in 1967. The fact that no one has been able to replicate or better this achievement 50+ years later speaks volumes. 4. Nobody alive today has demonstrated the blinding speed that Bruce had. Hypothetically speaking even if someone bigger and stronger than Bruce were to fight him in competition what good would his opponent's size/weight/strength/height/reach advantage be if he couldn't get near Bruce? It's a well known fact that he had to slow down his movements so that the cameras of his day could capture them. Most UFC/MMA fighters techniques today are slow, sloppy, telegraphed and outright clumsy in comparison. 5. Bruce was one of the 1st, at least in modern times to see the weakness of using traditional Chinese or eastern methods only in order to win fights. He borrowed from western boxing, fencing and judo to more effectively defeat opponents. I don't know of any UFC/MMA fighters today who have shown that amount of vision so as to utilise techniques that are still effective today (e.g Bruce using oblique kicks-JKD style against Chuck Norris in Way of Dragon 1972). MMA fighters today (Connor McGregor, Jon Jones) have really only just begun to see how effective that technique really is. 6. His dedication to his craft was second to none. He even had to have special modifications made to his exercise equipment so as to push the boundaries of his training regime even further. Again, no one who is 'just an actor' would do something like that. 7. If you were to give Bruce the advantages of modern training facilities today then Bruce would be even better and be able to adapt even faster so as to tighten up any weaknesses in his game. In all honesty it's scary to think just how good he would be with today's advantages given what he was able to achieve back then... Rant over, everyone! ✌
Ok him hitting as hard as a heavyweight is a fucking myth. Just by watching him train with a punching bag vs an average hw, you can see a CLEAR difference in power and chuck Norris was never under his tutelage, he just praised bruce lee on how hard he worked when he trained with him, even fucking chuck norris wouldn't make it if ufc was around back then. He was not the fastest ever just look at fucking ryan Garcia. He was fast but if you believe that they had to slow down the cameras cuz they couldn't catch his movement then your gullible. I love bruce lee as a martial artist because it was because of his philosophy that martial artist today are so much better than him, he was millions of aspiring fighters and martial artists's teacher and now because of him they have surpassed him. But its fucking dick riding fans like you that make people hate bruce lee.
@@yamommyromsies6418 It's not like I want people to hate on Bruce Lee at all which is why I made the comment I did to begin with. I'm just coming out with facts that back up Bruce's pedigree against those who seem to come out of the woodwork and try to defame him for no apparent reason. It's not that I think some UFC fighters aren't great too, because they are but most people still consider Bruce Lee as the G.O.A.T to this day. It's easy to come against someone who passed away so long ago and can't defend himself. If people choose to hate on Bruce in spite of what I posted (still trying to be respectful to MMA/UFC fighters today but still saying Bruce's achievements are still unsurpassed which is a fact), then that's their problem. To clarify, it was not my intention to come off as disrespectful in any way rather I was just trying to emphasise some good points. ✌
@@enterthebruce91 People like you are exactly why people are defaming Bruce Lee because of the ridiculous nonsense you talk. Bruce was a real guy not a comic book hero. The G.O.A.T? How can he be the G.O.A.T when his biggest win is over Wong Jack Man? Do you have any idea how hard it is to knockout a prime George Foreman in a boxing match or RNC Michael Bisping? None of the achievement of elite professional fighters against other elite professional fighters count because Bruce lee could do one finger push ups? Are you serious? You're defaming professional fighters saying this stuff. He didn't hit as hard as heavyweight, he wasn't the fastest guy ever and his technique was far from perfect and we have the footage to prove it we don't have to rely on Hollywood hearsay. Just go watch him hit the heavy bag or practice his jumping sidekick. Bruce was a smart, charismatic guy who was ahead of his time and more capable than a lot of the TMA guys of his era. You don't have to pretend he could defeat anyone ever to justify being a fan of his. I don't think you guys who clearly don't train or watch much fighting realise how silly you sound to people who do when you talk about Bruce.
JCVD isn't fake. He has a better record in kickboxing than the "undefeated" Chael Sonnen. Don't lump JCVD in with Steven Segal or even Bruce Lee. He actually fought.
he was the best with what little utilities and opportunities he had back then. So I would say that he will most likely be the best with what utilities, technology, and research that we have now. That’s why we see so much extraordinary athletes in the modern day. There is just so much more attention given to athletics and we now know way more than the people before us. When we compare athletes without taking in consideration of time difference we are being biased. There is also a lot of recency bias in our world. Which is why the debate between athletes born in different generations is extremely hard.
@@el34glo59 That's because you've never fought, and can't tell the difference between reality and movies. Go spar at a boxing, kickboxing or MMA gym. Get back to us on how "impressed" you are by other people's speed.
@@maxgoldfield7790 Can sorta confirm on speed atleast as a child. I never really practiced boxing or any sort of actual fist oriented attacks but I was mostly proficient with basic kick attacks. Anyway so my dad taught me a technique he'd figured out which I basically dubbed the counter reversal. So you basically take any incoming attack with a fist or leg and if you planned on using your fist over a kick than you'd swiftly catch or dodge the attack throwing a series of normal punches into whatever expoosed spot they had. So it depends on the attack. Might go for a kidney side hit or a straight throat punch or other body attacks. The weight of their own body would amplify the power of the hit while also throwing off balance because of the catch or dodge. Probably an actual technique taught somewhere but as small child facing bigger kids fast attacks were my go to.
Even his old friend said Bruce Lee was sparring with actual fighters but he couldn’t mention their names because it’s not his place to say it, Chuck Norris is probably one case because if I make a movie with Chuck Norris than on our free time I’ll probably challenge him to sparring fight so you would definitely expect Bruce Lee to challenge him, and people who are fighters said he could handle modern day fighting and his speed was incomparable
People are underestimating how strong and fast was actually bruce lee. Let's say McGregor or Gaethje fight with him in stand for one round I'm sure they wouldn't stand a chance if we talk about wrestling it is different story but I'm sure he would developed his skills in wrestling too if he was living in this time. So fighters like Conor Justin or Tony would be funny compared to Bruce Lee's speed power and intelligence
@@SelectCircle yh I assume Chael has his own editor who manages his RU-vid channel. Bruce would sure drop the editor, but can he drop the narrator...fuck no.
Bruce Lee would need exactly what every MMA fighter needs to enter a fight, practice. His style of fighting used a lot of techniques that would cause him to lose a fight because they would be against the rules. He would need time to get the feel for the sport's safety restrictions. Out the gate almost every fighter in his weight class would beat him because he just doesn't have the programming for what techniques to use in what situation based on the rules. He would have to think before acting. The rule book would be playing in his head. He also was just starting his ground education which would put him at a disadvantage skill wise. Let's face it, for his time he was amazing but MMA is the byproduct of what he and other martial artists (which there were others) started. They just started breaking from single systems and started mixing them. Modern artists have the benefit of growing up in an open system and learning what works and when for far longer. Take him at his prime and give him a year or so to do dedicated training for the purpose of fighting so he could build the muscle memory and he would be a handful. The more experience he developed the more effective he would become. The potential to be a champion is definitely there.
mma community is so dumb man, Bruce lee's vision and speed cannot even be compared to a normal human, the intensity of his training is so fucking high too. if he had the modern mma training no one could touch him. regardless, he'll always be a legend.
