He really has no clue what he is talking about. Him or any NBA today could even make a team back then not less play. Thats facts the game was different and much harder. It wasn't about entertainment. You had to keep you hand on top the ball, palm down, no steps at all! You couldn't run into you defender at all without getting a charge and that went for anywhere on the floor

Current players have such an advantage in how the game is officiated and played, spacing, free flowing nature of the game, etc. Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and other players from past eras had to work to create whatever space they could and if they played in today's NBA would have far less shots contested than they had when they played in the 80s and 90s. All aspects of offense is far easier now and over the last 10 years or so then it was in the 80s and 90s.

Fairly easily in my opinion, and perhaps even off the floor shortly after the midway point of the fourth. I want some analytic dude to figure out if Iverson is number one in the all-time on his ass in the paint list. They have ruined the sport in order to appease a more casual fan that prefers to watch offense. A 30 ppg average in today's NBA is like a 21, 22, average even ten or fifteen years ago. It's getting to the point of unwatchable, like the NFL. NCAA is a much better game in both basketball and football now.

It's like they way they destroyed the NFL; Dump off passes into the flat and very little running game. Give me a Barry Sanders, Herschel Walker, Bo Jackson sweep any day.

Reddick is a klutch sports client. He caters to the young gen and tickles their ears by downing the old guys. Reddick is a Dan Majerle. Probably not even that good, because Thunder Dan was a better athlete and defender than Reddick ever was. My point is that someone of that ilk isn't fit to be talking down on someone like Bird. Bird would've hung 50 on Reddick without breaking a sweat. The worst part about Reddick is that kids buy this whole intellectual act by Reddick. He ain't smarter than any of the older players, who weren't AAU and were raised on fundamental basketball. Plus he's no different than SAS or Nick Wright. He's just another hot take artist. The only difference is that he stooges even harder for LeBron and the current gen of players. More trash TV.

By JJ Redick's logic - these are OBJECTIVELY the 12 best 3-Point shooters of all time: Steve Kerr, Hubert Davis, Luke Kennard, Dražen Petrović, Joe Harris, Jason Kapono, Tim Legler, Seth Curry, Steve Novak, Kyle Korver, and Steve Nash. This list is made up of players who played in the 80s, 90s, and 2000s. Clearly Steph Curry is not on JJ Redick's list as one of the top 5 or 10 3-point shooters of all time. OBJECTIVELY speaking.

This is poor logic and example of a failing educational system. The difference between modern MMA and the past isn’t remotely the gap you’re insinuating. When is the last time human beings evolved? Start there. Rules and the growth of the game is the difference. More fighters mean a great variety of ability at top and bottom. Put the past fighters down and have them watch todays MMA and they’d be just as good if not better.

So many ppl from the past would absolutely demolish records in today's nba. Jordan, bird, Reggie Miller, ray Allen, Steve Kerr, glen rice, peja, dirk....today's nba rules and officiating is 100% set up for offensive scoring and particularly 3s. No defense whatsoever. That's why stats from the past 10 years are pretty much irrelevant bc they are bloated stats that would never happen without those changes. Some players would still be great like curry, kd, etc but they wouldn't be in the record setting conversations. It's way harder to score when you can't take 3 steps and shoot it or when you have a guy on defense who is allowed to hand check you and play body to body.

The guys that played in the Bird era went to the basket, they attacked the basket, the days before you could get kicked out of the game for a foul. The three point shot wasn't used as a weapon back then, it was used when needed. Today, it's a weapon that even the 7 footers use.

No ones going to call this generation plumbers and ice cream truck drivers. This era has Stephan Curry for crying out loud. Kevin Durant. Dirk Newitsky. Kobe Bryant. Kyrie Irving. Some of the most talented and skilled players ever. Tim Duncan, Joel Embiid, Nikola Jokic are probably the most skilled big men in nba history. Not to mention shaq diesel the most dominate big man ever which he didn’t become till the 2000s anyone who actually watches the game knows. that. Talent level has evolved too much to call these guys anything but professionals at their craft.

Look at SKate boarding in the 90's compared to today. Ever heard of Tony hawk? He did "The 900" in 1999. There was a 7 year old who did it like last year. Sports evolve and so do the athletes. Point being they should be compared to the players of the time they were in not to modern time.

The irony of the entire "we done with the 90's" campaign is that the premium placed on raw athleticism and power of players peaked in the 1990's - early 2000's. This is because of the rules that were in place at the time. The only guys winning MVPs in the 1990's looked like and were built like Michael Jordan, Olajuwon, Shaq, and David Robinson. As soon as the NBA started changing the rules to make the game easier for less athletic players, Steve Nash and other international players started to win MVPs. And now we have the league that we have today.

I think JJ makes generally good points, but safe to say if Bird wanted to be the best 3 point shooter he could have done that. Maybe the facts don't merit it but the game let him take other shots more often. So his greatness is what his gen of rivals and players are balking at. Incredibly stupid to say Bird wasn’t one of the best 3pt shooters ever. Clearly his era didn’t prioritize the same approach today’s era has to shooting 3’s. However, in a 3pt shooting contest, Bird showed how good he was at shooting 3’s. Who cares if JJ can tell you what degree a player’s release point is at? How does at all imply that he was a better 3pt shooter than Bird or at all able to say who is or isn’t a good shooter? It just seems like there is a conflation between shooting volume and ability. Any player who isn’t primarily a 3pt shooter is likely to have much less 3pt shots/ game. That doesn’t speak to shooting ability

What would any of that have to do with his percentage? If he was that great to be called the best ever he would have a good shooting percentage. You can't say duck his percentage didn't you see that 3 point contest 😂

@@colereviewsyt if taking 3’s is not part of the game plan, when do you think 3’s will be taken? Likely end of play clock or Hail Mary-type situations. Whereas in a 3pt contest, the whole point is to test someone’s 3pt shooting ability, albeit in a restricted sense, which is fine to make a note of. My point is that if the era/ coaching didn’t favor 3pt shooting, the 3pt shot selection will be so vastly different than what we have today that just relying on percentage is a bad way to measure how good a shooter someone is. Also, Bird’s role on offense wasn’t a shooter role. That also adds to the type of shots he would be taking. JJ is an entertainer and has to generate views via hot takes to keep eyes on and generate money. He is doing what he has to do.

No that doesn't mean that more than likely they were taken at the end, it means they just preferred to try to get a 2 as opposed a 3. There isn't going to be any way they's absolutely perfect but percentages is a lot better than saying I won a 3 point contest. A 3 point contest there's no defense. There's no restriction, you get to have a perfect rhythm. It's the equivalent of a QB pro day..... Has nothing to do with how good a QB they really are. And JJ is far from just an entertainer. There literally isn't more than 20 people walking that has the experience and expertise of actually playing the game and taking 3 point shots..... And you are talking like he's a random guy in RU-vid comments that doesn't know what he's talking about. That's crazy

@@colereviewsyt it’s an imperfect comparison because you are comparing two incredibly different eras so the commonalities is what you gotta put the most on in terms of comparison. That would be the 3pt contest. It would be odd if Tom Brady was missing most throws during practice, but had amazing completion pct in games. Everyone who is good at shooting 3’s should do well in a 3pt contest. It would be odd if you only knew how to make 3’s when guarded but air-balled routinely when practicing alone. JJ NOW is an entertainer. He has to get eyes and ears.

Steph Curry has a 40.2% 3 point percentage, Larry had 40.6% 3 point percentage. Larry took significantly less 3's but that's because the 3 point line was new right as he entered the league as a rookie! Aside from this, 3's were heavily guarded up close if you were a 3 point sharpshooter - there was no space since hand checking and no 3 second defensive rules were present. Stating that Bird was not top 10 3 point shooter is insane. He's crush it if he was given the green light in an era where perimeter players drive and kick for the open 3. Steph's better though - don't get me wrong. Still, Larry was clearly the better player. Oh, and in terms of shooting, including 2's and especially contested 2's? Larry slaughters Steph. In terms of shooting midrange, Jordan dominates that conversation anyway. So when you discuss best shooter, you have to include 2's and 3's.

Larry's career 3pt percentage was 37.6 not 40.6 and it does make sense he's a better mid range shooter than steph, he was 6'9 with longer reach allowing him to shoot over shorter players on contested shots. Scale steph up to 6'9" I'd take him in the mid range all day. Also in the 80's people didn't guard 3's up close whatsoever because they were seen as more of a risky shot then and there weren't as many competent shooters. Larry bird was an awesome player and could be great any era but idk if I'd put him at best shooter regardless of era, a lot of that is based on hypotheticals

@@ShaShaSha534 Taking the last year is still actually meaningful. It shows he could have had a great % if he grew up with the 3 pt line. It just comes down to how much you practice it. Bird was almost KD height, he has a huge advantage over Steph with the release point.

@@sup9542 Exactly! Imagine coming into the league as they literally creat the 3 pointer and you're already crushing it. Steph grew up with the 3 point line. Bird is one of the greatest shooters ever. He had a stretch of 4 years where he was .920-950 from the free throw line, which is insane.

Actually Bird won 3 consecutive three point shooting contests. Bird was an all around basketball player who attended the contests against specialists. So for him , a 6'9" rebounding forward its much more impressive than say a Craig Hodges. Reddick is remiss in not adding that

To say today’s players are more athletic is 100% true. To say the players are better today is hard to measure. People forget the rules were different as today’s rules are designed to favor the offensive player and traveling and carrying aren’t enforced. Players couldn’t do that back then.

Bird never practiced 3s nearly as much in his era as he would in today's era because they were never relied upon and he was still one of the greatest shooters of all time. If he played in today's era he would be practicing 3s nonstop and would probably shoot 43+% from 3 for his career.

Greatness is always relative to competition. Sure Tracy McGrady would be better than most players but thats not how it works. In the olympics the 100m sprinters today are better than everybody in history but they arent greater.

Don't agree with JJ dismissing that Bird would be a top 5 three point shooter in today's era. The 3 point shot was much less important and less relied upon in his era. He didn't need to practice threes nearly as much as he would have to in today's era. I think with the dependence on the 3 ball today, that Larry would've become an even better shooter and also because the game is less physical today.
