I cannot keep up with subtitles. I can speak several languages but all the other movies I watch dubbed. Including this one. It was my favorite this year.

Right? Its funny cuz most of hollywood movies are shown with subtitles in korean except for like animations for kids. I was surprised to see so many reviews pointing out the subtitles issue for parasite.

As a Brazilian, I can say that most people prefer to watch dubbed, probably because they don’t wanna spend their time reading subtitles (but I only watch subtitled movies)

@@jase87 like what I've mentioned above... they call it an "international" award ceremony. If it was to be just for America then they should advertise as so and only award those within America and not meddle with films from other countries, but they do.... Furthermore, the racism is not bound to mere countries but rather race itself. There were plenty of times when the entire group that was awarded was ALL white. No blacks, no asians, no hispanics. All white. "America" never had only a single colored race living within their country EVER throughout their entire history, but the oscars act as if they have.

Oscars are not racist. They have a category for best foreign film.

Even when artist won award everyone knew who had been a producers in that movie😉

But in the same time we can remember how Bergman, Cuaron,Almadovar,Haneke,Lee and many foreign directors were nominated on a lot of awards. But what globes who didn't give a shit about Bergman (1 nomination against 10+ at Oscars), Haneke and Almadovar(nothing at all)

Modern manifestations of American cultural features are evident sure, but that's different from saying Korean society is "largely built on US values". I mean, America could be said to have been built on Greek values more than Korea on US.

mensrea I’d say the US borrows more from Rome than Greece. The US has a Senate, political representatives, and is often culturally conservative, which are all more reminiscent of the Roman part of the Greco-Roman culture.

I'm well aware of the Roman parallels (the orations before the Senate today on Trump's impeachment is clear enough evidence of that). Ppl don't know good cinema just because they disagree with your statement. Really? Personally, Parasite is the best film of the year but it's not worthy of winning nearly every academy award, especially in the acting categories.

shamir fisher Marriage Story is a fantastic movie and one of the best. Agree that MS has the lead and supporting acting edging out most of the competition. But Parasite had a more layered story to tell with a lot more themes it pulled off skillfully. I appreciate both so much. But Parasite gave audiences a lot more to digest and enjoy.

Darkplace GSP aside from the acting categories because Parasite has a larger cast to share the narratives, it should win mostly the other major ones. But because it's the Oscars, it likely won't.

I totally agree. After watching so many amazing Korean works, I'm glad one (Parasite) has finally and deservedly received wider recognition in the west like so many others will most likely do in future.

I’m surprised that it took this long for the Oscars to even recognize a Korean film. There were other Korean films that were as deserving of the Oscar award as well.

- They go from being poor and useless and not being able to fold a piece of cardboard, to suddenly in an instant becoming all like CIA-level undercover agents, personalities and role takers. With that level of smarts, delivery and education they could obviously do more than just sit in a crap filled basement. Sure, they "were" poor, but then when they have the opportunity to earn a real paycheck and life, they absolutely shit all over the situation, somehow completely trashing the place they're staying in, with zero worries about f**ing up that golden ticket they worked to open up. They didn't set a clear timeline, so suddently also within the span of what seemed like a week or two, all their long term servants got ousted purely by these new recommendations, with no background checks or suspician. Even mentions them all smelling the same, but nobody bats an eyelid. Nothing was added to that. The woman that was the housekeeper comes back and is allowed into the house. And for some reason, there is husband living in the basement?! WTF is that. Sure, if she just came back to grab him and left, then fine... It could have been another case of "here's more parasite", but instead they went some weird twisted route that makes no sense. You mean all those 4 years the rich guy coming home never questioned or noticed why all the lights turn on and off when he walks past them? Or ever got an electrician to look into random flickering or why the lights actually don't connect to where they think it should? Also, the main poor dad, never seemed to have any anger issues. Didn't mind much about being called out for shitty boxes or having pay cut. Didn't mind drunk guy peeing outside of his place.... However, just because someone said he smells a little, he gets up and stabs a guy?! LOL. Throw in the completley unnecessary and grotesque sex scene on the couch. Or the exploding toilets of black sewage... Mixed with the lack of resolve about the mess being cleaned up or anything... Then to finish it with "I'm gonna get filthy rich so my dad can get out of the basement". LOL. So damn stupid! Sure, there are some points they tried (but failed in my opinion) to note about disparity and life between rich and poor, or throwing in little easter eggs or metaphors around the place, but in trying to be clever with all these little trimmings, completely overlooked the FOUNDATIONS of the movie! And to that, I say... Absolutely disappointing film.

I thought it was based on which country produced it.

Silent movies have intertitles and the intertitles of The Artist are in French though the actors spoke of a line or two of English at the end. Plus it's a French production, so I think it should be considered a foreign language film.
