Nailed it Nemo. Even when I was a full TBM this concept always drove me crazy. But it wasn't until after I left that I realized why and it's simply because what they say is the definition of double speak.

reminds me of the mythical story of 2 monks both with the bad habit of smoking. The first goes to the abbot and asks if he can smoke during prayers and got a telling off for even considering it. The 2nd however gets a positive answer and praised for his faithfullness, The difference? The 2nd monk replied 'you asked if you could smoke whilst you prayed; i asked if I could pray while I smoked' It all depends on how we ask the questions

Thank you for bringing this to light, I've argued this conundrum in hypocrisy for years and people just don't see it for what it is.

The smile Renlund makes before he transitions to a different thought in General Conference unnerves me.

Throughout the times we see that revelations are only a mere desire to adapt to the changes in society. The saying: God's doctrine is eternal, means, as long as there are no pressure or activism that demands the contrary.

Mormon sermons consist primarily in reminding members, who made open-ended covenants when they were too young and uniformed and blindsided to know what they were committing to, that they must keep all of those covenants as their leaders continuously discover or invent or elaborate them. Church leadership is like a rancher who daily looks at his sheep, anticipating the next slaughter, wondering what new cuts of meat (together with appropriate advertising) could make him the most money.

You should always pray about whether you should pray about something. If you get the answer that you can pray about something, then pray about that thing. But if you get the answer not to pray about that thing, then don't pray about that thing. Actually, it might be safer to pray about praying about praying about something. And then if.... you get the picture.

So it is okay for the current prophet to ask for revelation concerning things that have already been revealed, but not us. So we should just blindly accept whatever the current prophet says. Got it! Oh wait, but we are asked to pray about the truth of the Book of Mormon even though that has already been revealed. I don't know, maybe they changed their minds on that one too. It's almost like it's all just made up. But that can't be, it was already revealed to be true.

I’ve always had doubts about the church even as a kid it’s only recently that I’m actively involved in ex Mormon content and now I know why they told us and everyone active in the church not to consume it. Ex Mormon content simplifies and breaks down all the stuff the church tries so hard to complicate or completely hide. As a black member, this church is shit to us. It took the church WAY too long to allow black members to receive the priesthood it’s kind of crazy.

You did great on this video. It is pretty enjoyable watching those leaders run about trying to salvage things in the face of common sense.

The church’s stance on the importance of the nuclear family is what originally led me to research the church which led to my testimony going six feet under. I am aromantic asexual. The doctrine I was taught my whole life is that I would need to be married and have multiple kids or I wouldn’t get to the highest level of heaven. And what I wasn’t taught, that I would have to share an already unwanted husband with other women. If the church loves women, this wouldn’t be a thing at all

Yep. Exactly, Nemo. There's more holes in the LDS church than swiss cheese, and so many contradictions within itself from doctrine, to policies, to messages from General Authorities. I left the church 6 months ago because of church history. I've since realized how many things were confusing and didn't make any sense as a believing member. But as a non-believer, all of the anti-mormon explanations make perfect sense.

Ironically enough … when I left the church in 2016, I spent my Sundays hiking! I felt so much peace in nature that I hadn’t felt at church, I had only felt deep shame, guilt, and pretty severe depression every Sunday during and after church til the day ended each Sunday.

The first crack in my shelf came when the guy with the God complex became God’s prophet.

The absurdity of the phrase “follow the prophet” is “revealed”.

Don’t even need to pray! I Know it is Not for me. I want a one woman man. I follow my Holy Spirit..Not the opinions of men or women. And the only purpose of a prophet was in the OT..to lead the people BEFORE Jesus Gave us the Holy Spirit and to prophesy of Jesus Coming. Jesus is ALL you Need.

The same things/abominations were being practiced in Jerusalem, one of the things Lehi likely had to preach against, and one of the reasons he had to leave. 31 For behold, I, the Lord, have seen the sorrow, and heard the mourning of the daughters of my people in the land of Jerusalem, yea, and in all the lands of my people, because of the wickedness and abominations of their husbands.

Unless I command my people doesn't mean to live the abominations. This is misunderstood. It means God will separate a group like he did Lehi & family to raise up a righteous seed.

You could argue that nothing changed in 1978 - The blood of Cain were considered unworthy to receive the priesthood according to the church up until then - all worthy makes were already allowed to hold the priesthood. The 1978 revelation does not say the the blood of Cain are now worthy and we have a repeat of the lost pages.

Oops! Joseph never taught polygamy, in fact, he taught against it his entire life. Brigham and others who were already practicing polygamy in Navoo by 1843, are the ones who have altered the truth of the history of plural marriage. Please research this to understand who the father of LDS polygamy was.

Polygamy was an abomination I had relatives who joined the church in Sweden and then they got over here and found out about polygamy back in the early days and they decided to hell with this church and they left because of polygamy they were totally offended by this practice it was not mentioned to them when they joined the church in Sweden

Friends, this is why Sola Scriotura is vital! The so-called restoration is presumptuous and misguided. No book can be on par with the 66 canonical books of the Bible. The church needs realignment with Scripture, not with anyone who styles himself as a prophet. Tradition, human reasoning and experience must be judged by and subjugated to Scripture.

You make some very good points Nemo. So what can e concluded? Well many will say the LDS Church is not to be believed. Others may say that Joseph Smith should be believed but not the modern leaders. And still others will say modern day prophets are to be followed over previous ones even Joseph Smith. It would seem the leadership of the LDS Church has embraced the last of the three I mentioned above. This would be the wisest choice but only if modern day prophets had the same power to speak with God or Jesus as Joseph Smith claimed. As a member of this Church I have to be honest and state that I do not think modern day leaders or presidents/prophets/apostles since the time of Joseph Smith himself have been as inspired or favored by God. So the Church is kind of in limbo and waiting for Joseph Smith’s true successor to be revealed. The guys currently leading it are like the judges who judged Israel after Moses/Joshua and did so until the next true prophet appeared. (Samuel)That’s what I am waiting for.

Nemo, I hope plural marriage is restored , once again. Plural marriage will be a blessing to the Saints. That's up to the individuals to enter into the practice of plural marriage. I know the modern day feminists are fighting against the return of plural marriage. I reject the words of Jacob as to the practice of plural marriage. You are spot on! Personal revelation and prayer are a must. Satan teaches a person to not pray. Hmmm. Personal revelation is fine as long as it agrees with the church. Example: Nephi killing Laben (direction thru personal revelation), yet there's a commandment against killing. I asked some friends what would they do if they received such a contradictory answer. "You're listening to the wrong spirit". Hmmm. Don't question the prophet today, just obey him, even if he says something contrary to previous prophets. Obey today's prophet without question. Isn't that putting man above Christ? Isaiah warned us about that. Hmmmm. Polygamy is an abomination, and God never changes. The D&C section about polygamy was added many years after Joseph Smith was murdered. My opinion is that section was fabricated to support a practice men wanted and started. Hmmmm. The Book of Mormon and the D&C have had numerous changes since they were first printed. Things removed and things added. Even the Word of Wisdom has been altered. Hmmmm. The leaders do twist words to support their positions while ignoring the obvious hypocrisy.

Regarding all the complaints about the Church's leadership. I have no complaints with any of the General authorities words, past or present. I take it all in stride. If something makes no sense, I set it aside. If it fits, I attach it. I was twenty six when I was converted. So I spent the first twenty six years of my life utterly cut off from a knowledge that God is real, from the power of the Priesthood, the comfort of the Holy Ghost, from all scripture and membership in the Church. I was denied all of it. But I don't grumble, nor am I bitter to any degree. I am just glad to be remembered by God and taken from the pit. And I reckon that my path is wisdom in God. I don't seek to leverage fault. But rather, I look for understanding instead of riding a fault like a vehicle to a rash conclusion, and leave truth behind simply to cause harm. And so it is all a matter of personal motivation and what is in our hearts as to whom we serve, be it our God or the Devil.

I believe poligamy is abusive and humiliating to women.

The true sabbath in Jesus's day was sundown Friday to sundown Saturday. Emperor Constantine changed it to Sunday. Before he became Christian he was a sun worshipper. When Jesus died on the cross the law of Moses was fulfilled. The real law of Moses not the Parasitical law was pointing to Jesus. He came He fulfilled. It is finished. We are now under the covenant of grace.❤
