Could South Africa Break? 

Things I didn’t mention in the video: After watching this back I guess I never really said that Apartheid was not just a disaster for South Africa, but morally evil, so I’ll say it here. When I say that diversity stunted South African growth it’s basically saying “diversity is bad”, which from a North American perspective is a very controversial thing to say. But the difference between North American and African diversity is that most (about 85% willingly) North Americans either left their home or had ancestors leave their homeland to live in this new land, it was a choice. And North American society has only existed for less than 400 years, compared to African civilizations existing for 1000s. That's 1000s of years of rivalries as well as unique cultures, languages, and rituals. These groups developed naturally along geographic boundaries, like all other groups do. Then comes along a random group of outsiders who tells these different people groups they are now supposed to be part of the same nation, and I hope you can see the problem with this type of diversity as opposed to the North American kind.

The news that Cape Town is "about to run out of water" is about 4 years out of date now. The water shortage ended back in 2018.

Honestly as a south african I can see why people outside south africa would think this video is very INFORMATIVE when it is shallow.Everything this guy talks about is just history that we learn in class and barely contributes to the problems we have today.The main drive in our countries fall is our corrupt government that cares more about themselves than the people.

I’ll admit we do have a lot of problems as a country but a civil war is very unlikely.

If only you could live in Soweto for a few years. Then you would know that there will be no war here. We aren’t that naïve. The fact that we constantly act out against our government is a sign that our young democracy is strong. The people still have civil rights. Economics and history are important yes, but let us not disregard the value of the lived experience. South Africans won’t let a civil war happen.

I've studied abroad in SA, and I feel this video is off in several ways. The biggest issue being downplaying the sheer corruption and incompetence of the ANC government. This is a government that decided to randomly ban alcohol while kicking off covid lockdowns, "for societal goods." The wealth inequality is also a crippling issue, but it is also not so much a literal black & white issue (anymore). The number of wealthy black SA is comparable to white SA. It is best to think of SA as a nation once divided by race, is now divided by (economic) classes. And the difference between the haves & haves nots is jarring. The upper 1/5 having a comparable living to Mediterranean Europe (Spain, Greece, Italy), while 4/5 live in apocalyptic poverty.

I think a great video would be one on why the Congo 🇨🇩 failed. It has a very interesting history and it’s very unfortunate that it failed as it has mineral wealth comparable to the combined economies of America and the eu.

I'm a little biased since I'm half Lebanese, but I would love to see videos on Iran or Lebanon. Iran is definitely a country with a lot of eyes on it, so it would be interesting to learn about their economy, if they are becoming more poeerful, if they're forging alliances with Russia or China to combat the US, etc. Lebanon also would interest me, as its economy and infrastructure have basically collapsed, and could even be considered a failing state at this point, so understanding what led to this moment, and it's future, would be very interesting as well. Being half Russian as well, I would enjoy a video on Russia. You know, given the recent news, they'd make sense to make a video on, plus they are a major power but with some interesting features. It's economy isn't that great, and a lot of the West doesn't like it, and given their weak economy, they can't leverage them like China can, so understanding how they're still doing well, if their economy is growing, or if maybe they are allying with China to combat the US, etc. I know it's a lot, and I'm just leaving these suggestions for the sake of it, but no matter what you do, it'll be good, I've been binging your channel and have been loving it.

I think you can’t blame all of the inequality on the historic oppression from whites, when the black majority government has made legislative programs to help the poor and there is still this unequal outcome you can’t just point the finger at racism a good example of this would be in Zimbabwe where mugabe seized the property of white land owners to help equalize the country put it made their economic problems worse.

We have lots of problems in SA, but I am confident that we will never have a civil war. 🇿🇦

This video was informative but it’s clear that it was made without insight to some of the problems we face . I speak as a black South African man that is apart of the the upper middle class, admittedly my standing in life is not a result of my own efforts but rather my parents who are educated and overcame unfavourable odds to get to their current positions in life .I cannot speak about the past because i am apart of the born free generation but i will speak from my own experience. Like i said i speak as a member of the upper middle class but like many other black south Africans in the same standing i have relatives that are apart of the lower class and have to live and experience the failures of our country on a daily basis . Upon seeing the great disparity between the haves and the have nots in our society and in my own family one can identify key issues that have lead to some of the failures.Some of the biggest issues are an extremely corrupt government, a failing educational system and almost negligible growth in our economy . I will not go into these issues as others have already posted comments with sound analysis of the situation but i will speak about the one thing this video fails to acknowledge and that is the nature of the people that live in the rainbow nation which is among some of the most diverse groups of people on the planet yet we have a common voice and it says that we want change and improvement for the all South Africans . There are no groups that want to be isolated in their prosperity but wants growth for all . We are a country that shares a troubled yet inspiring past that illustrates our ability to come together when it means the success of our nation as a whole . We saw a glimpse of our unity when The springboks won the 2019 world cup and the country cheered in celebration for days on end , Black ,White , coloured and Asians alike.To the world it was a game but to us it was a glimpse of the joy we could share together . Our country is troubled yet the prospect of civil war is not something that any of see as a viable or effective manner in which to deal with our problems .

I can see that you tried to do your best to make this video but as a South African here's what I think you got wrong in your video: First off I really don't think this country will collapse and become separate countries. An economic collapse could happen (if the current government doesn't go through with its plan to clean up the country's corruption and fiscal policies) but not a collapse of the country's government and borders. I don't know why in each of your videos you keep mentioning that the only reason why some countries exist is because of colonialism. South Africa exists today because we see each other as people of the same country regardless of ethnicity. That's why the bantu stans didn't try to become independent after apartheid. And I should also mention that countries like Australia and Canada also only exist because of colonialism. I know this might be hard for someone from a country where they make up a majority majority to understand but in Africa the concept of a country is not about being from the same ethnic group its about a shard sense of national identity. Most countries in Africa have at least 5 to 10 ethic groups living together and they're all tied together by that shared sense of national identity. The countries borders aren't nonsensical too. Multiple ethic groups can exist in one country without it being a problem. Black South Africans see themselves as on group and not as separate groups. Many people especially in big cities have family and friends who are from other ethnic groups. People generally don't care if you're not from the same ethnic group as them as long a you can speak their language. Like I said above in Africa nationality in most case is more important than ethnicity. The countries borders were formed by geographical factors. Just look a a picture of the country's rivers or ock formations and you will be able to see the country's outline on a map. And a an African ii really don't like it when people talk about African borders and put the blame all of Africa's problems on them. It is very hard if not impossible to divide Africa by ethnicity and if someone tried then Africa would become a continent of a thousand countries. Plus with globalization and migration the idea of a country being made up of a single etchings group is quickly becoming outdated. I really don't think a civil war is likely. The unrest that happened last year wasn't mostly done by zuma supporters. The people who initiated the riots were a few dozen zuma supporters but other people joined in when they saw zuma supporters hijack trucks and loot stores. The people who joined in saw an opportunity to loot for themselves. Some of the looters were just poor and trying to feed themselves while others just wanted a to get in on the action before everything was gone. Some people even took advantage of the situation and sold food once the stores were destroyed. Since then business bounced back within a month. Where I live it took 3 weeks to repair all the damage. You made another mistake by saying that most White South Africans live in the western part of the country but actually most of them live in the interior in and nearly half of them are in Gauteng. Plus I would also like to add that the country was even more divided during apartheid. The government back then was so obsessed with dividing the population that they even made sure that if you were from for the example the Zulu, Tswana or Venda you would only be allowed to live in areas with people from your own ethnic group. But these days with more free travel a lot of those places are no longer just filled with one group. The reason why South Africa has 3 capitals isn't so we don't have one group taking over. It's actually because when the country was formed in 1910 it was formed by combining 4 countries and thus the capital of each country became one capitals of South Africa. Pitermarizburg was removed as one of South Africa's capitals after a while. The difference in income and employment is also a bit misleading. Because the White middle class of South Africa is around 4 million while the black middle class is around 11 million(it should be noted that there are 45 million Black South Africans so even though there are more wealthy Black South Africans these days most of the navite African population is still poor). The difference in wealth between Black South Africans has grown over the past few years. Older generations and rural Black South Africans are not progressing as much as younger urban generations who have access to government free education and access to tenders and preferential employment laws. At around 9:20 you should have updated your map of election results. In 2021 South Africa had elections again these were Municipal elections not national elections but the anc lost its majority for the first time in history. In the 2019 elections the anc had 57% of the vote but last year they had 46% of the vote and it is clear that the public is dissatisfied with the anc's rule. Another important thing that happened during the 2021 elections was that the and lost its majority In 2 other provinces which are Gauteng (the most populated province) and KwaZulu-Natal (the second most populated province. The opposition is parties that took over the provinces are working hard to convince voters that they are better at running the country than the current government. The riots mostly affected KwaZulu-Natal and part of Johannesburg, mostly in the townships other cities in Gauteng weren't affected by the riots. While yes the country's gdp was declining over the last decade the economy actually grew faster than expected last year. And it is expected to grow at 2 to 4% this year. You're really wrong about Lesotho. The reason Lesotho still exists is because both the South African and Lesotho governments aren't interested in merging. Both governments aren't particularly interested in expanding. Plus the government of Lesotho is not very keen on the idea of losing their power to their neighbor. The monarch of Lesotho would also go from being a leader of his own country to just being another king. Here are between 8 and 10 royal families in South Africa and the Sotho royal family would be far less influential than the Zulu, Tswana or Xhosa King. With the current unemployment and economic problems we're facing right now it wouldn't make any sense to add 2 million people on top of our problems. A few people in Lesotho are also not comfortable with the idea of going from being a sovereign country where they're a majority to being part of a country where they will make up only 2 to 5% of the population where they would have less political power. The same reasons also apply to why Swaziland and Botswana still exist. The most vocal voices of Lesotho annexation are some people (on both sides) and organizations like the Free Basotho Movement which is an organization from Lesotho that advocates for annexation. They tried to hold a referendum but the government of Lesotho doesn't want that to happen. I didn't mean this comment to one off as rude or condescending but I think it would help your videos even more if you talk to the people from those counties before making your videos to get a more informed perspective on things happening in those countries.

How is declining birthrates a bad thing? All developed countries have low birthrates, the fact that they have lowered it so greatly is a sign of their progress.

One of the neat little intricacies of South Africa's geography is that the Cape region is one of the few parts of Africa where a European could settle in and comfortably live in, similar enough to the climate back home that thinking of it as a second homeland was viable. This is the biggest reason why it was the colony with the most White emigration and why it's still the African country with the highest % of Whites (though that's been decreasing in recent years thanks to...a variety of reasons).

As a South African I agree we gonna have a rough few years but overall I'm optimistic about the medium to long term future. Two things the video misses about our geography and ethnic relations is that we have mountains and ocean to the south and sides and dessert to the north ,the interior is where the majority of ppl live. On the ethnic relations although south Africa has 11 languages we have 4 language groups and most black south Africans know 3 languages(their home language, one from the other indigenous language group and at least some English) most of the time u don't know what someones home language or tribe is unless u ask or they mostly speak their home language and most of the time ppl barely care. The collapse might still come but I don't see the country dividing on ethnic lines wat I'm more worried about is a continuing rise in nationalism and xenophobia that would make us a regional pariah. The ANC has been eating itself for a while now and shows no sign of stopping so they'll out the picture by the end of the decade either from being voted out or collapse and after that we won't have a one party dominant democracy anymore which will make it harder for future governing parties to veto corruption and bad policies like the ANC does. The short to medium term will be hell though I don't look forward to it but we have a decent pool of graduates and intellectuals with degrees from some of the best universities in the world we won't have a shortage of solid ideas to bounce back the only thing that can stand in the way of that imo is how dedicated the majority of ppl in parliament are to turn things around and we dont end up with a self destructive political system and/or ideology again.

Everything starts with education. Even the basics, how to grow food and feed yourself. SA fails at education, everything else is doomed to fail also. The government is only 28 years old. It is riddled with corruption. Something like arranging the country to take care of the basics, food security (a food stamp type program) and education, has so far failed. The government was handed a hot mess in 1994. But they've had 28 years to make changes. At this point the ANC has to own their mess and can't blame what happened prior to 1994 for what is happening now.

There is so much wrong with this video which could have been avoided if you did some real research, this video is clearly from the perspective of a foreigner(nothing inherently wrong with this if done correctly). It would have been a good idea to get some opinions form actual South Africans because it sounds like you're just reading from Wikipedia pages. South Africa is a mess and its good to bring awareness to this but this paints the wrong picture.

South africa has been concerned about a civil war for decades and so regulations against owning firearms and the power of their armed forces must be taken into account when considering the possibility of a Civil war. It’s not like there’s just guns and ammo lying around like in other african nations, and the armed forces are not anything to scoff at unlike in nations like the drc

Whatever the economic problems, the video is completely off. He keeps showing a language map as if people live in separate, different parts of the country. They don't. What that map doesn't show you is that in an area where a language may "dominate", that "domination" may be 40%. What the map doesn't show you is that in the *same area* the next highest language group may be 38%. But because it isn't the highest percentage the area is painted in the colour of the top percentage, giving the impression that it's mono-linguistic. E.g Cape Town: 42.6% black (mainly Xhosa), 39% Coloured (Afrikaans-speaking blacks& mixed), 16% white, 1% Indian. Now add the percentage of Afrikaans whites with Afrikaans speaking blacks and you end up with a slight Afrikaans majority and a green map, and yet from Cape to Limpopo *genetically* SA has an overwhelming African genome. This is just one example of many, in the video implying a flawed picture which vastly complicates the situation, without explicitly stating it.

The main problem is the ANC (yes the party that protest for human rights are the problem ) they are so corrupt . ANC literally kills people just to keep their power and I don't think they're gonna solve the energy crisis. Inequality you got right this is obviously due to apartheid , we don't have alot of well educated people and they live in tin houses and they aren't the best living conditions for people. But today I see alot of black people working in decent houses with well paying jobs . Yes we have a high unemployment rate is high but alot of those people don't work in formal jobs like your target walmar or Apple alot of them work in informal jobs like spaza shops . Im a native black south african and I live rich life but my grandmother lives in those very poor areas but when the people there aren't unemployed they own spaza shops and there are houses with good living conditions.

As someone who lived in Sa for nearly 20 yrs, I’m sure the country is never going to fall into civil war, I reckon in the near future we will keep going down until our lowest point which will be bad, it’s clear to see we r headed that way, but I’m also sure we’ll recover quite quickly as the country is very stable in other areas, like our infrastructure and many other things that will be useful if we are to recover, other countries that have gone into civil war recently have all been far worse off than Sa in terms of resources and abundance of goods and services, so I reckon we’ll be fine in the very long term

I was in SA in 2017, both in Cape Town and Jo’burg, and there are parts that are very nice and parts that are not so nice. I was there as part of a school trip that focused on ethics so Apartheid was a big topic, and we went to all of the museums while we were there and I tried to speak to as many native South Africans as I possible could. In general, people don’t have any issues with differences between one another. What I did learn about though, was the Indian Ocean and Arab slave trade, my god was that horrific. You thought the Atlantic slave trade was bad, you ain’t seen nothing. You might think that there would be some kind of taboo about talking about Apartheid, but not at all, they really don’t mind and freely answered all of my questions. They didn’t blame the average members of a group, but instead acknowledged that the problems arise from the government, something they even said persists to this day. We were fixing up a slum in Jo’Burg, and running right through the center of it was a modern railway line that was built when they hosted the World Cup. Huge football stadiums are built next to slums and are just not used anymore. And, there was a water drought in the Western Cape when I was there, well I looked into it, and turns out that water was totally misappropriated and crop yields were impacted dramatically.

Great video just 1 thing to note, Boer is pronounced "boo rrr" so you say "boo" with a hard "r" at the end. The word literally means farmer.

South African here and I'd like to mention a few things. Firstly, yes I do think this country will have a civil war and collapse and yes all Apartheid did in the long run was hurt the potential of this country. However I can't stress enough the failure and ineptitude of our governing party the ANC that has been in power for nearly 30 years. Since the ANC was elected in 1994, we have a government that has only exacerbated our problems of inequality, racism and poverty by maintaining bad race-based policies, rampant corruption and inefficiency. The ANC has had nearly 30 years (more than enough time) to institute policies that promote economic growth, strong education and raise the standards of living for the poorest but have ultimately failed. The way this country is governed is a socialist regime. Entrepreneurs and businesses owners have little incentive to grow because of high tax and anti-white legislation and therefore struggle to create jobs for people. I believe that South Africa's only hope is to have a less centralised form of government and become a federation of provinces where our provinces can govern autonomously.

As a south african who actually lives in the country I can say you created a very distopian view of south africa and fail to mention the gains that south africa did achieve in the post apartheid period up until 2009 when jacob zuma came into power. Before zuma came into power south africa was on the up averaging a gdp growth rate of 5%. There was and still is a growing black middle class in sa. Plus to mention the anc has been in decline since jacob zuma came into power and now there is a real possibility that in our next national elections the anc will be booted out of power. The fails of post apartheid sa really came when jacob zuma came into power and used his power as president to enrich himself and his friends at the expense of south africans. It is the zuma administrations fault for the state sa is in right now. What south africa needs to do is fix the electricty crisis, fix the education system, and then fix the labour laws and you would see a dramatic turn in the country course. People have been predicting the south african civil war for decades yet it never happens. People say that there is hatred between races in South Africa but when white people go into the black townships there is usually no anamosity, no violence. South Africa is troubled but if we can sort out our national government, the country can be a very productive country.

Alright, as a South African I want to add a couple things: Firstly, there is a lot of divide within the different ethnicities. For example, Afrikaans who live in the Cape have a culture that leans heavily towards German/Dutch culture, whereas Afrikaans culture in Gauteng is something completely new altogether. And with the diffrent tribes like the Xhosa and Zulu... its a mess. Whoever is the Zulu king has got access to the Zulu 'Trust' which basically holds all of the Zulu's wealth, and we are talking Billions of USD here, as well as the fact that the Zulu king owns about 30 percent of land in Natal. The state has got no power over said land, and the King can collect the taxes and pocket it themselves (I think they have to give a percentage to the state but either way the king can make heaps of money). When the Zulu king died last year.... I think you can predict what went down. And here is the kicker. Most of the Native Zulu in Natal are in general more loyal to their Zulu King than to South Africa, which could mean that the Zulu can literally leave SA, and the goverment would not be able to do anything about it. I don't know much about the Xhosa or other Native tribes so I have no idea what's happening there. 2nd Point: Most of the wealth is ironically, owned by the 'Black' minority. Most whites are usually middle class/upper middle class, though there are some who are pretty rich. Reason why people think the Whites have got most of the money is due to them being extremely visible to everyone around. Moreover, most rich people keep their money in trusts, charity etc so there is that to take into consideration. It also does not help that Racism is pretty rampart, especially among the White Minority and no, I am not painting the whites as good guys. What I am saying is that there is a lot of things going on behind the scenes. Also, for more context I am talking of 21st Century SA. If I got anything wrong or forgot something, please correct me

you seem to skim a lot over the insane corruption of the current government and blame it all on apartheid. I don't think I have to be the one to tell you this, but the history and political climate of the country is A LOT more nuanced than your video explained here.

I'll tell yah some forgotten history The first boer war was bloody but the briish back down but when gold (not daimonds) was discovered and thats when the briish came back and used the first concentration camps to capture the Dutch kids and women to force a surrender because the gorilla warfare and marksmanship of the Dutch challenged the briish which is why the boers despise English and England as they committed the worst war crimes that they banned ( this is simplified by allot)

We were actually growing economically until Zuma became president in 2009. People didn't like how boring and business focused the prior president was so they voted in a man with nothing more than a Grade 3 education.

...so, no mention of the possibly 20 million illegal immigrants over the last 30 years out of a population of 58 million that affect those poverty percentages, I see. And no, the mountains were not a divide of natives and non-natives. The colonists literally ethnically cleansed a large part of the Cape in the 1700s pushing the natives into the very East into what would become the country's first native reserves.(rebranded as "homelands" in the 20th century). Over the subsequent centuries those people from the reserves (Transkei & Ciskei) were the main labour in the Cape Colony and since the second half of the 20th century are moving back in. And no the top 10% owning the capital is not all white. It's just the top 10% and the top 5% elite is roughly 50/50 racially. Unequal? Yes. But not along concrete racial lines. As someone who lives in South Africa,I feel the most unrest and the biggest issue for the average citizen is load shedding.We get power outages often times for 2 hrs a day,this is especially frustrating as I believe we sell coal to other nations yet we do not have power(it should be noted we don’t have load shedding every day but we will get ~1week to 1 month long periods of power outages and around 6 a year).Now I am white but it seems that something isn’t right with the elections as well,now the ANC has been running the country for around 18 years,but in the past couple of years(notably when Jacob Zuma was president)the economy has fallen due to corruption,yet the DA(the second main candidate) has not been voted in.I find it frustrating to hear results like 60% ANC and 25% DA ,it feels like majority of the nation itself is out of touch.Sadly,that is the case as most South Africans live in shacks in the country side where regardless of the leading party they are in poverty,so they will vote for the ANC as they have a good reputation as the “enders” of Apartheid. Now seeing this was actually pretty awesome,but you made some notable mispronunciations,here are a few Boer is pronounced boor (roll the r) And Afrikaans is pronounced Afrikuns (again roll the r) still this was great to see, good job!

As a South African, I found this very hard to watch. Not sure if the level of misinformation is intentional or a simple matter of ignorance. What's worse is that it is presented with so much confidence. Even the end of Apartheid, with tensions at the greatest heights, a Civil War never happened. The title seems like a clickbait to me. You did get the history right though. My suggestion: speak to South Africans!

I didn't want to say this but it's the one video under which people would support. The only flaw in these videos is that they only have the big picture impactful points and don't give the idea of actual living and society beyond the most important yet not the most impactful on the day to day life aspects. I'm talking about actually understanding and feeling the place, the distribution of everything in general between the parts of society, like how you can't just explain the US with the simple situation, you need to use different "belts of states", the village/town/city divide, the spirit of some kind of great social ladder where people look up to great big places of job and living, things you can't really put in simple words but through how the words are put together with their order in time and particular interesting ways that don't have a simple direct meaning make the atmosphere of it all be (Yes I'm watching this between fever dreams while sick and can only speak like a politician would and not like a healthy human, how do you know?)

As a South African I can easily say this video is not very well made... As another comment put it it is simply "Shallow" and may seem solid from the outside looking in but it really doesn't reflect on what is actually going on in our country. You should have consulted several people from the country (from all around the political and cultural spectrum) to truly get a good grasp on what is truly going on in SA. Even though I think SA is one of the more complex countries out there in terms of current affairs, I honestly think it goes for ALL countries that you need someone (sometimes multiple people) who actually live there to consult before you can even get a basic grasp of the true situation.

The chance of civil war is pretty much zero and a huge misunderstanding of the political dynamics in SA. Most South Africans have broad agreement over the challenges in the country and this is across all ethnic groups. The most likely part of the country to have a conflict is KwaZulu Natal, but even this is quite limited and not close to a majority of people even within that province would support it. There are other minor things like a Western Cape independence movement which has close to zero chance of happening and has less than 1% support even among voters within the Western Cape. The biggest issue is not some live conflict like a civil war, secession or revolution but ongoing degradation of institutions and governance leading to economic stagnation, high unemployment and all the associated issues like high crime rates and so on. If this can be turned around (and there are many serious ongoing efforts to do this), then I think SA can be put back onto a positive growth path. People have been saying South Africa will collapse as a country literally since it became a union over 100 years ago and this has never been close to happening.

Correction at 1:58 , the city previously known as Port Elizabeth was renamed in 2021 to Gqeberha , and while I dont put a civil war out of the question, the only person that I could even imagine having the pull to organise a full revolt is the leader of the EFF, Julius Malema, but he is smart and knows even if he wins a civil war he will come out worse for it. Also there is an independence movement to break the western cape away from the rest of the country and the organisation boasts high polling rates and good support from the people, but when election time came, they barely got a few thousand votes compared to the tens of thousands their website was boasting they were going to get. Unless a massive spark were to happen I doubt more than local unrest will happen as the same diversity that divides the population also divides any potential revolts, its no wonder why the more Zulu areas of KZN, Gauteng and Mpumalanga were hit worst by the riots since most of the people that supported former president Jacob Zuma were Zulu because Zuma was Zulu. Meanwhile in the Western and Eastern Capes which is majority Xhosa, there wasn't nearly as much happening, and in Boer country I doubt there would be so much as a peep out of even the most fierce Zuma supporter.

While apartheid did damage South Africa's socio-economic structure, there was a good opportunity for the ANC to work extra harder to reverse the situation. Afterall, when the ANC came into power, they inherited a strong economic base and excellent infrastructure that were already built by the apartheid system. Instead of using this opportunity to build an even more stronger economy for the benefit of all, particularly the previously disadvantaged black majority, the ANC chose the path of corruption. The already established economy was squandered through corrupt activities, public officials were appointed purely on the basis of comradeship instead of qualification and suitability; mediocrity overtook meritocracy. Crime rates spiralled to unprecedented levels, illegal immigrants from other parts of the African continent flocked to South Africa in large numbers, poor service delivery by state institutions became an order of the day (public health care in South Africa is so deplorable that you are highly likely to die in a government hospital than to survive an illness or injury), Foreign investment stalled because of uncertainty created by high levels of crime and corruption in the country. A combination of all these factors worsened what was already an imbalanced socio-economic structure of South Africa. South Africa 🇿🇦 is a country highly likely to disintegrate through civil unrest because of these negative factors than to emerge into a coherent developing economy; reality is more damage has been done than good. The story of the disintegration of Yugoslavia is likely to be the story of the disintegration of South Africa. Hence, I am moving to Canada 🇨🇦 to find myself a new home and a new future for myself and my family.

One of the most striking things I found out is that in the decades following the end of Apartheid, South Africa has slid backwards in terms of social and economic metrics. And that it’s one of the few nations to voluntarily give up their nuclear weapons. The other being Ukraine. Hopefully they can pull through 🙏
