Is Vietnam the Next Economic Power?

Vietnam is a rapidly growing nation in terms of economy and manufacturing. But how has its geography, demographics, and neighbors affected it so far. I mean it does sit right next to China, possibly the world's biggest economic power soon. Will Vietnam be able to make a name for itself in the future?

7:55 DUDE, YOU HAVE THAT HISTORY TOTALLY BACKWARDS!!! The Khmer Rouge was NOT set up by Vietnam. It was backed more by China, the U.S.A., and Thailand, and actually invaded Vietnam (allied more with the Soviet union), which led to Vietnam retaliatorily invading Cambodia and deposing the Khmer Rouge and replacing it with another Soviet-aligned (and much less murderous) regime. China invaded Vietnam in retaliation because Vietnam DEPOSED the Khmer Rouge, WHICH WAS A CHINESE ALLY.

Actually, it seems that Vietnam/North Vietnam and the Viet Cong did support the Khmer Rouge BEFORE they won and took over Cambodia. This makes sense since both were communists fighting against non-communists and Pol Pot fought the French with the Viet Minh in 1953-1954 before leading the 1968 Khmer Rouge insurgency against the Kingdom of Cambodia and U.S.-backed Republic of Cambodia. I presume the Khmer Rouge also helped the Viet Cong, since it's well known that the Viet Cong operated in Cambodia. Thus, there was a very pragmatic reason for the alliance as well as an ideological one. Unfortunately for Vietnam, the Khmer Rouge turned out to be very fascist as well as very communist, and viewed Vietnam and the Vietnamese as an enemy for ancient reasons (and still relevant geopolitical reasons), as well as the fact that there were ideological reasons for them to align more with the Chinese (who supported them even more than Vietnam did and even personally trained Pol Pot in military, political, and ideological subjects) while Vietnam was more allied with the Soviets. P.S. For inexplicable reasons, I am incapable of editing my original comment. EDIT: I've edited the above comment to say Pol Pot started the Khmer Rouge insurgency in 1968, not that he formed the Khmer Rouge in 1968, because I just read that and I'm not what it means. I also changed it to say he fought "with" the Viet Minh, rather than "in" the Viet Minh. He actually did join the "Khmer Viet Minh", which seems to separate from the the Vietnamese Viet Minh, but was also dominated by ethnic Vietnamese. "Fought" also MIGHT not be strictly true, since he apparently was tasked with farming cassava and running a canteen.

@@Mr.Nichan One of the major reason for Khmer Rouge dislike of Vietnam (outside of historical and geopolitics) is that Vietnam doesn’t actively support it, they are more fond of the Kingdom of Cambodia (since the kingdom is quite moderate and allow VC to operate in Cambodia), they doubt Khmer Rouge will do the same thing. So Vietnam multiple times either reject or quite indirect in their support of Khmer Rouge before their take over, which pushes the Khmer Rouge in the arms of China. And yes the Sino-Soviet split also contributed to their hatred as Vietnam is loyal to the USSR.

One of the reason VN has low urbanization is the "new countryside" program, which improved living condition of VNese countryside, making it less attractive to move to big cities. This program aims at improving roads, access to education and services, reducing poverty rate and some more. It has been quite successful as most of VNese countryside have transformed, so the program's criteria have been changed to reflect the next step.

7:40 I remember watching a documentary on the Vietnam war and one thing really surprised me: A commentator said, "The Vietnam war with America was a short-phase in the greater war with China". It basically showed me that Vietnam views China as a greater existential threat than all the other countries it has gone to war with. It certainly explains why they have good relationships with the USA even despite their war.

The only reason the U.S. gone to war against what is now Vietnam. Is because the French gave the North independence and tried to maintain control of the south. Later the south would declare independence and then asked for U.S. aid against the north. It was a civil war and the U.S. only picked a side to help I don’t think any Vietnamese have problems with the U.S. but i do know that they have bigger problems such as China and U.S. aid can help them a lot. @@balllightning4335 South Vietnamese looks like South east asian because the old Dai Viet Empire invaded and took over Champa, an old civilization closer to the Siam than Han chinese. The OG Vietnamese had darker skin colour, longer hair and like dying their teeth black, all practices that was lost during the Chinese occupation due to Chinese culture being imported and Chinese standard of beauty and Chinese characteristic in occupied Vietnam. 7:55 I think there is a mistake here. As far as I know, Vietnam at that time did not help or lay the foundation for the Khmer Rouge (also known as Pol Pot) that regime was created by China. The Khmer Rouge attacked villages around the Vietnamese border and brutally murdered many people. At the same time, Cambodia asked Vietnam for help, so the Vietnamese decided to attack the Khmer Rouge to end the genocidal regime and liberate Cambodia. After success, the Chinese side began to launch an attack on Vietnam but failed. Before withdrawing, China massacred all people. They also destroyed schools, hospitals, etc. At that time there was a JAPANESE REPORTER who was there to document China's crimes, but was BURNED TO BECAUSE.This evidence is verified by both Vietnam and Japan!

The two flags of Vietnam and China have nothing to do with each other. The Vietnamese flag was born before the Chinese flag. The Vietnamese flag is red of blood and yellow of skin. The five-pointed star represents the five classes of Vietnamese people at that time. And moreover, Vietnam did not build a Polpot regime, but that day, Polpot Khmer Rouge, with the help of China, blatantly sent troops to kill compatriots in the southwestern border region of Vietnam, although before that, Vietnam warned in advance. While sending troops to support in Cambodia. While losing and being pursued by the Vietnamese, Polpt's army fled to Thailand and was helped by the Thai army. The northern border of Vietnam was invaded by Chinese troops from 1979-1989 and then ceased fire. The relationship has now been normalized.

I was born and raised in the U.S. I love Vietnam and its people with all my heart. I am doing well in life and have a huge urge to go to Vietnam to live. I am in the process of getting my Vietnamese citizenship, and hopefully live there and help contribute to the local economy, and eventually help the people in need through volunteer work. As a Filipino, I deeply admire the courage and resiliency of our ASEAN brother Vietnam. Throughout their history, they have valiantly fought against powerful forces like the French, Japanese, USA, and China, and successfully gained their independence. In contrast, we Filipinos have struggled to achieve the same level of success, particularly during the Spanish, Japanese, and American occupations, due to our internal divisions and lack of unity. Our society's emphasis on putting family first has also hindered our progress not just towards independence but development

I think that's why Ho Chi Minh started communism(communism and capitalism are both designed to be a temporary system for transition of a society, not a permanent one) in order to unify people. During hard time in history, people think more about survival and are more vulnerable/stressed. So people also unify on 1 firm belief tomove forward in hard times. It's easier to make people follow simple things, but the same concept can also apply to stereotypes and lies just like the strategy of the nazi: if you want to lie, make it short, make it a big lie, then repeat it until people believe. Kind of like what's going on with some asian stereotypes portrayed as unmanly/unreliable and it started since the 1800s but no one mention it in history just like the war crimes american soldiers commited. But everyone did bad, it's just that I don't like one of them is allowed to hide due to their media at the time. In summary, the mass is very simple minded so it's easy to lie but also the mass seek simple and firm ideology during hard times to move in pack.

The biggest Irony of the Philippines is that they broke away from the US at the worst possible time for their future. They could've possibly developed into the major SEA powerhouse just like Japan and Korea up north. Quite possibly becoming richer than any current US state or territory before officially declaring independence. The positives and negatives that come from having full support of the richest nation on earth can change a lot about history.

ty for the vid abt my country, appreciate it. I do want to point out that map you use on Vietnamese EEZ lines is incorrect, so is almost all maps on Vietnam SCS claims. Vietnam did not ever draw out an offical claims map in its entirety like China’s nine dash line official claims. Most of the map shown Vietnam EEZ includes the Pratas Islands (Dongsha Atoll), which only Taiwan & China claim. To all fairness, Vietnam claims 200 nautical miles from mainland + Hoàng Sa & Trường Sa Archipelagos yet the exact boundary is blur if not none. Can’t blame you for it however, you can’t really make an accurate map on something VNese government never made official and decided upon. Other than that and Khmer Rouge, great informative and positive video.

Your video has failed to mention that Climate change is devastating to Vietnam as its lengthy coast will be a perfect target for monstrous typhoons and storm surges. (Sorry, our sea dike systems have failed us many times, enough to consider them as an instant, one-time use solution) Also the current run-away drought - soil salination and repeat of Mekong Delta will persist and worsen in the future when Mekong River is running out of fresh water and the temperature climbs up enough to evaporate the water reserves. Hence, Climate change will delay our economic growth significantly and with predictions of half of Mekong Delta being rendered unable to cultivate around 2050-2060, our future is less certain and increasingly hostile.
