Could the government do more to make ‘leaky’ homes more energy efficient?

With the unprecedented rise in energy prices, perhaps if we had better insulation for our homes, it might be less of an issue. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
But instead, the UK has some of the most “leaky” homes in Europe - a combination of the age of our houses and flats, including some new builds too.
Retro-fitting is expensive and there's a shortage of skilled workers, as well as government support to make homes energy efficient.
We have visited some of those affected.

Thank the Tories for scrapping energy efficiency standards to line the pockets of the house builders and fossil fuel industry. The Tories have to go.

Here in Ireland there are increased grant levels in a one stop shop online for up to 50% of the cost of energy retrofits and free energy upgrades for some in fuel poverty. It's not perfect and more still needs to be done but at least there's some help. We have a Green Party in government here.

I wish there was a chance of the Green Party being in charge in the UK. I don’t think it will ever happen though and would almost feel like a waste of a vote 🙁

@@1989gem Because you have a FPTP electoral system so smaller parties don't stand a chance. Ye need to campaign for PR so you can vote for who you really want to represent you without it feeling like a wasted vote.

I used to live in an old rural cottage, very drafty, heating oil cost £300 a month. I spent about £300 on loft insulation, water cylinder jacket, pipe lagging and 20 tubes of mastic. Got the heating system power flushed, boiler serviced and a few new rads (cost £1000). End result - £50 of heating oil a month, and an extremely toasty crib! 😃

I don't understand how houses in the UK are built, but here in the US it isn't a "complicated" job. A company can come in and blow insulation in the attic within a couple of hours. We had insulation blown into the walls a few years ago. They made little holes, blew the insulation in, patched the holes, and used a camera to show the insulation. Our house is 70 years old, and we paid the bills for the insulation, but they were not horrendous. There was also a deduction from the tax bill to encourage this type of home improvement.

£100,000 to retrofit insulation? I was thinking of doing this but had no idea it could cost this much.

The easiest way to keep warm especially at night while one sleeps is to set up a tent in a room. There are some that don't need to be anchored to the floor. That is what they do in the coldest part of Siberia. At least, one tribe does that.

Add insulation everywhere Put plastic on the inside of all windows Buy electric outlets that have a inside panel that stops leaks Put insulation around all doors Caulk all windows inside and out

Why on earth would it be the government's (other tax payers) responsibility to pay for insulating privately owned homes - especially half million pound homes? That house at 2:47 looks as though it might be a barn conversion. Have the owners never heard the aphorism "close the door - were you born in a barn?" By all means, set standards for new builds or council homes - that council house with the hollow walls seems to be a clear case for cavity wall insulation. But I assume every council in the country is heaving under the strain of cuts to repay lockdown. I thought that there were national minimum living standards for council houses? One point though - surely cavities between walls act as insulation layers, not coolers? Isn't that how double glazing works?

because government exists to make the lives of its citizens better? Because we want to use less gas and specifically Russian gas? Because energy bills are so mad that people cant afford to heat and eat? Because other European countries are doing it? Because the UK housing stock is the worst insulated in Europe? In Italy they did an insulation programme that grew their gdp and saved peoples bills
@matbroomfield
@matbroomfield 2 года назад
@@jebbo-c1l Again, I ask, why is it the government's duty to spend MY money insulating YOUR house, or vice versa? If you never insulated your house before and now have crippling energy bills, whose fault is that? People's bills are a consequence of the choices they made.

if there are many laws that governments consider necessary they need many workers to ensure the Laws are inplace, being followed, and the people to impose penalties when the laws are broken. A bigger government. Small government means leave everybody alone.

That's a narrow minded argument. You could basically throw around that line about anything. You should care to contribute to having peace and stability in your own backyard, i.e. Europe. The issue with the housing stock won't be fixed neither with the ''£300m a week for the NHS saved due to Brexit'' (lol), nor the money sent to prop up Ukraine in the fight against Russia. First, focus on lobbying for the law change so that the standards are higher.
