The possibility of anyone in Fallout having a navy is low, but the Enclave are the most likely to.

1:18 Gotta stop you right here. Ron Meyers (capt'n of the tanker in F2) says "The computer will take care of the rest, if it's still working. It'll sail right out to the oil rig, and they won't fire at you because you've got the IFF transponder" implying that there are defences in place, unless you're willing to assume they'd gun down a tanker with their personal arms. Besides, Fallout is based on old Sci-fi, and that kinda assumes WW2 level of warfare with bits of atom punk and lasers sprinkled atop of it, so no fancy missiles/antimissiles/point defence drones stuff.

@@arx3516 "Exactly, it's the lack of beyond visual range options that makes power armor an essential tool in FO warfare." ...What are you even talking about? Power armor is barely bigger than most humans. And there is "beyond visual range" options in the Fallout universe, same as ours. It's called "artillery." It just isn't that useful because of how armored and mobile power armor is. In fact, ironically, one of the best targeted weapons against something like power armor, besides some sort of guided missile technology which is questionable in the Fallout universe, is lasers. Even if the power armor can take the energy from a laser, it's going to get real hot real quick and it has a long range and it's the speed of light. I digress, but the thing that makes power armor viable in Fallout is the fact that they can actually make it work and power the thing and have it be as armored as it is. The fact that you're a walking tank that can take small arms fire like it's spitballs and carry crew-served weaponry is what makes it essential. Because, good luck making something that can target a human-sized thing at range and destroy it when it's that mobile and armored. "Beyond visual range" or point-blank, good luck.

Something about this bugs me though. Navy ships often have to be rotated in for maintenance, so the need for repair and docking areas, naval bases, remains critical. Now, if we can assume China in the Fallout Universe wanted to keep America off their soil before the Resource War ended, that would mean they often targeted Naval bases and airports as priority. As such, Hawaii would have been all but destroyed completely. Alaska, and the rest of Canada if I recall, were all under the US Banner by the end of the Resource Wars. So Canadian Military and Naval presence would have been folded into US. That said, given the struggle for Alaska, I'd wager China had a good amount of nukes aimed right at it, and the nearby coast as a final defiance to the US, so it would be safe to assume that area would have been lost and severely irradiated. Back to the ships, it's not too much to say that the waters of the ocean would have been irradiated quite badly, especially with runoff being a thing. As such, not only would that destroy the ecosystem of the ocean and thus depriving survivors of vital emergency food resources, but also the added radiation in the water would likely have an adverse effect on the ship's hull. This, in turn, would mean the surviving ships could be out and about for shorter periods of time without repair and refit, never mind WHERE at the bases new parts or material would be coming from! Yes the Engines would be more robust than our own, but the hulls themselves would still corrode due to the salt water and other chemicals alongside the radioactive Fallout in the water. And I'll bet even the best American engineers never saw THAT need coming before the Bombs Dropped. Logistically speaking, An Enclave Navy MAY have been part of the plan. However without the resources necessary to maintain it/200 years worth of downsizing, consolidating, and ultimately seeing the resource allocation of such to be an unnecessary expenditure, compared to things like Vertibirds or Power Armor, seems likely. They'd likely stick to a few good, solid carriers, ones they could repair and refit and could carry their Vertibirds that could take them further inland with minimal risk to forces/personnel. Another point to this idea is the likelihood of other presence of enemy Navy forces during those 200 years. Unlikely it would be argued over time, and thus standing naval vessels would be scuttled to be spare parts for carrier vessels. Meantime, with no known Ocean Based threats, the gaze of the Enclave would instead look to the shore. That's my thoughts anyway, for whatever that's worth. Thanks for reading, take care!

I like to think the navy had to set up shop shortly after that war as the ships were all in disrepair some making it to land to a surviving civilian port and others either sinking or being forced to beach themselves and become a costal base. Perhaps the fleets will be scattered of the hundreds of survivors Ming Navy ships maybe 10 or so are still operating in the modern fallout timeline maybe a small naval fleet split themselves from the enclave to become a good faction that are the hood guys in a story, maybe if there was a fallout New York perhaps the Statue of Liberty would become an enclave naval base where they are the hood guys that the game won’t consider the bass guys

He was instructed to go through Chicago on his way to Navarro in case he needed repairs. Interestingly, Navarro is referred to as an "outpost" and there are "outposts" in Chicago. @Trintard mostly because of the retreat out east as it implied they recalled all active enclave personal to those locations after the fall of the oil rig with only chicago being a still known and untouched base that is directly mentioned. alaska could have a base but i imagine it would be deserted as do to being the final battleground of the war it probably got nuked harder then nearly anywhere else and is probably a giant icy version of the glow. the navy and the moon would be the only unmentined locations that make sense to still exist and be unconnected to the remaining encalve as both are outside the contiential usa and unable to return home or in the hypotheitcal enclave navy idea whos existence forbids them from returning to shore unordered.

Considering that the USS Texas is still around, albeit not in very good shape (she's going into drydock and getting VERY much needed repairs to stop leaking and issues with corrosion that are literally threatening the structural integrity of the ship), as was suggested I could see the USS Texas still being around then. Also? Battleships, although admittedly newer designs than Texas, were shown to be... disturbingly resilient against nuclear detonations. To the point where it was rather shocking how little damage some of the battleships in the Operation Crossroads tests sustained. That said, just like the "Atomic Tank" nuclear tests against a Centurion tank... the crew would likely have not survived. Animals in the battleships to test for radiation got significant doses and died days later. Although, if you were willing to have radiation shielding, hilariously enough chances are a battleship could actually be hit pretty close by nukes and keep fighting, along with its crew surviving.

For a dream Fallout game where Bethesda can write and use a game engine that is on par with what we currently see I'd love to see a Fallout game where it's set in the Pacific with Hawaii and Alaska being two of the main areas you can go and the Enclave being a joinable faction. I'm seeing this as a Fallout game that has Subnautica vibes with giant mutated sea creatures and the Enclave is out in the Pacific using their Pre-War fleet to rebuild on these two US states and various US territories. I see this game also having a Waterworld-esque setting where Raiders act more like the Smokers and settlements being not only on islands, but man-made trading posts out at sea with scavenged ships. Hell the antagonist can be remnants of the Chinese Navy with what few stealth submarines they have. I would see the Enclave in this setting being a objectively-questionable "good guy" faction with others being various islander confederations that banded together like ancient Polynesian tribes, a fishing guild-type faction, a Coast-Guard styled Minutemen that patrol island settlement territories to fend off the Smokers and maybe even a faction built around the worship of these new mutanted sea giants. This game would also do something that Bethsda needs to do which is steer away from the Brotherhood. They've been too reliant on the BOS's name for games.

Despite Autumn, a high ranking scientist, hearing orders from a new self proclaimed president Eden and its orders to move across the east coast, he knew better than to travel a couple thousand miles risking flesh and blood against new possible enemies to obey an order made by a machine. And that is why when it was asked where they were going to be headed, it was decided that they would be heading towards a place he recalled reading about in the terminals that are inhabited by other branches of the enclave, somewhere very north, able to be made easily on the oxean under the protection of their mighty battleships where no one would dare follow them, yet it would all be worth it as autumn told his comrades about the possibility of still remaining oils In this far away land. As someone who knows a good deal about naval matters I’ve got a few comments. 1 while the nuclear power plants can keep ships going for decades that is only power wise. Ships still need regular maintenance normally following the 1/3 rule. 1/3 of its time is spent being repaired. 1/3 for training resuply and spinning up and 1/3 in actual duty. During a war much of this can be ignored but only for a limited time of a few years. As a commander of a navy after a nuclear exchange the primary objective would be acquiring dry docks that can repair ships especially the biggest ships. However these are also high priority targets for the enemy. This is part of the reason San Diego is so badly nuked. Most of the other options like the Virginia naval base or similar would likely have been targeted to a similar degree. The most likely to survive would be the ones that nukes had to travel the furthest to get to because more chances for AA to take them down. Think Texas. 2 the Panama Canal is definitely getting nuked. I don’t think this will stop the fleet from moving to the other coast because they should all be nuclear considering that cars have nuclear power but that kind of trip would likely be one way and only done if the knew a base was waiting for them with repairs. Basically I don’t think it would happen. 3 the most notable thing to me was they mentioned having battleships which they absolutely should not. Missiles and jets should make them obsolete but maybe laser AA is enough to protect them and nuclear shells for bombarding could be useful. 4 so for a sound course of action they would need to quickly acquire repair yards and food. I think the East coast fleet would end up in Texas where they could raid the Caribbean for food or make deals with local towns to use their nuclear for power in exchange for food. The pacific fleet probably checks San Diego and Washington and they are probably both deleted. Leaving some ships on station with the enclave the rest would scour the pacific for a base but only Japan or Australia might have something still left. As things break down they may need to take the risk and head East. Some probably break down along the way.
@matchesburn

There is something to consider in this alternate timeline where the Cold War never really ended and crazy large scale nuclear/fusion powered projects are the norm: Floating dry docks/ship-based dry docks. I mean, even a ship the size of USS Iowa was and could be put onto a floating dry dock. Is it optimal? No. Is it efficient? No. Is it as capable as a regular dry dock/repair dock? No. But you could make it work. And, if necessary, you could do some serious maintenance and repair work on one. WW2 was definitely a testing ground showing that if you're crazy and desperate enough, you can even make some inadequate work. If only barely.
@Gingerbreadley
@Gingerbreadley 2 года назад
@@matchesburn that’s actually a great idea. Only issue I see is the actual dry docks needing repairs that and obviously finding parts for nuclear warships. They probably keep most of their ships in mothball the majority of the time because they don’t need them all too often.

Maybe the Navy realized the Enclave's isolationism was a dead end and justt took all the fleet and headed for South America. Being highly mobile and armed, they'd seek out a pleace where they can build docks, farm food and where little resistance would be found. I'd belive the Navy still kept contact with the Enclave's rigs and installations, but was more like mutual asistance rather than being their subordinates. They would try stablishing supply chains between key locations, rebuilding and making Hawaii and making it their main Base, keeping contact with the forces in Mainland China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. And setting foot on South America to farm food. If any branch could rebuild after the downfall, would be the Navy with use of the Marine Corps. Depending on how bad Japan, Brittain, Germany and France were hit, they could provide key infrastruture for a navy.

You have a Assaultrons, Tankdroids and Vertibird Drone Gunships (in the older dragonfly style) vs Enclave Troops, various power armoured officers, Spitfires and obviously Naval fire support (eg Danger close). Maybe even contact the Mod author's and make it into a full spin off game (obvious wishful thinking lol)

So a minor hole I gotta poke into the theory you got is Pearl, Hawaii would be an extremely high priority target since it is one of the key bases in the Pacific, granted it’s relevance would be downsized if the USN did in fact use an all Nuclear Fleet, it would still be like #2 on the list outside of San Diego due to its dry docks and other naval facilities. I also have the theory that Enclave Naval forces could have before or after the Rig’s destruction either set up in Alaska, or Cuba, as both are very isolated places (at least for post war) where they can lay low very easily while still being able to respond pretty quickly should a threat show itself.

I got the idea awhile ago for a Fallout:Panama game that starts out in shady sands that takes place sometime after fallout 2 where you join a trading company that’s constructed a big sailboat on the coast of california that’s planning on sailing down the mexican coast to panama to cross the old canal to find what riches lay beyond in the carribbean. Except when your ship reaches the canal it’s currently being run by the enclave navy that escaped the destruction of the oil rig. Your ship gets destroyed and your the only survivor of your crew that can interact with the different factions around the canal (remnants of the panamanian government maybe, or other groups of locals fighting to get the enclave out of there country?) and you can choose to try to fight for a way home or stay (with the enclave or the locals. This just kinda reminded me of that.

I've always thought that the Enclave making the oil rig their main headquarters was... very unwise. The entire premise of safety only works if no one knows about it and it isn't attacked, since we never see anything in the way of defenses. And, obviously, an oil rig is not that good of a defensive structure compared to, say, a bunker built underground. With steel and reinforced concrete. That's self-sustaining. That the Enclave were literally building hundreds of already. Plus, you can easily have more space in an underground bunker than in an oil rig. And it's easier to protect against anything getting in, whereas anyone in a fishing boat could just pull up to your oil rig and do whatever. Never made sense to me that the oil rig would be the preferred base of the Enclave. If anything, it's the very last ditch option they should've exercised.

Well in metro universe (metro 2033 etc) People on radios talk about nuclear submarines the day of armaggedon and that submarines continue attacking and others just want to go home and survive a lot of time because they could be submerged a lot of time and even fishing to eat... so... Im pretty sure fallout is not an exception.... the thing is we could see that? Because in a post apocalyptic World has lot of sense to have ships (because wasteland and roads) but it seems in bethesda fallout games every single powerful faction like fitness and super advanced weapons and armor but not vehicles for combat or logistics (i know its the engine) but even with that we had a super giant blimp which you cant shot down with mininukes but still not big ships.... I want to see a giant map like mad max bigger and with empty wasteland which encourage you to fix something like a highwayman, or a small fishing boat or a small balloon or blimp... but seeing bethesda asthetics (wich i love) we probably had flying aircraft carriers like the shield one and not water big ships cuz they are a bit complicated to animate, and physics. But still just imagine how cool would be the BoS in fallout 4 entering the wasteland ok their prydwen: WE ARE THE BROTHERHOOD WE COME IN PEACE! and then you see uncloacking the USS Misoury: WE ARE THE ENCLAVE AND WE NOT!

I find it more likely that 200 years after the bombs fell, if the Enclave has any working ships, they are few and in poor repair. The reason for this is because while they may have nuclear engines, ships require technical know-how and thousands of individual specialized parts to run. Stuff wears out, even more so when salt water is involved. It would also be hard to keep so many ships staffed with crews that require so much technical know-how, and as you mentioned, the need to feed so many people. Not to mention, just because someone's military doesn't mean they're enclave. The rank & file sailors would want to get back to land, see if their families were still alive, try and pick up whatever poor pieces of their lives remained, not sign on to an eternity of service. A more interesting idea is if the enclave has people in space. Fallout 4 mentions that there was a battle on the moon, and Fallout 3's Broken Steel & New Vegas both have satellite-based weapons. Like with the navy, those satellites would need someone maintaining those for them to be operational 200 years later. Not as much maintenance, but someone to ensure they didn't get pulled from orbit by gravity and burned up in reentry at the very least.

Also I love the idea of a fleet still being around. The maintenance of such vessels would be hell, but could you imagine some Iowa Class vessels or such just chilling in the pacific. This also raised the question on what ship designs would be popular in fallout. I'd imagine late ww2 designs like the iowa class, montana class, and alaska classes pf ships would sort of continue on and inspire whatever new classes of ships that come next. Also, I wonder how the sentury bot on uss constitution would factor into this fleet? Is ironsides technically serving the enclave

id imagine the old ww2 battleships like the iowa class would be extensively retrofitted and modernized like other moth ball fleet ships and used for defending the homeland while the more advanced warships were deployed to the front in china. so kinda like our own real life USS Missouri modernized with cruise missiles and guided AA / CWIS batteries only nuclear powered and alot more directed energy weapons like laser and plasma batteries to compliment its AA, fire support, and anti ship capabilities. The fleets out in the Pacific would probably try to sail for the most remote and strategically useless islands out there. Perhaps venturing to micronesia or Pitcarin island. Those islands are likely to be intact and "only" impacted by the nuclear winter. The soldiers of the ships could have tried to survive on the islands. Anchoring in a safe harbour/beach the ships and live in and next to them (electrically) fed by the nuclear reactors.

Logistically the enclave couldn’t have a real navy at all as they are let’s say 8000 strong (6000 total personnel on the oil rig, 2000 of which are soldiers including those spread out in New California) in F2 (probably about 600 by F3; it takes that much to man a small ship today), while in sci fi terms it’s more realistic to rely on automated transports large and small in a rigid system (the tanker). They might have used smaller amphibious assault ships for the vertibird fleet with 2 helicopters and about 30 men per ship on part-time deployments. Some agents and autonomous units on the coast would operate with salvaged vessels of varying size as many on the coast would. The Fallout universe does have fully automated controls in vessels (again, the tanker). They still need to build, man and maintain them and supporting ships, though. And I doubt they have enough nuclear fuel for them all. An actual post war navy would still be impossible

Okay, Hawaii (in reality Oahu is the major US naval base in the Pacific, with major operations in Asia it's likely Hawaii, as in the big island, is also playing host to airforce and army bases) and the Panama Canal would be high priority targets during Fallout's nuclear war. I'd be inclined to suggest surviving US Atlantic naval forces would instead rally to Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands.

Could definitely see an enclave navy picking up where the rest of the enclave left off in a new fallout game, assuming they threw together some hydroponics onboard to feed the crew. Could be a turnaround for the enclave, adapting to the new ways of the wasteland and coming to it not as an enemy but as a friend-- I know it's standard enclave stuff but playing the generic evil genocidal bad guy card for the 3rd game when it's extremely obvious their strategy isn't working would also be pretty dumb. A fight between the brotherhood and enclave could break out again, building off FO4's disastrous eastern brotherhood to maybe serve as a major antagonist, with elder maxson having driven them to be a much more radical faction, destroying any signs of progress or advanced technology deemed as "dangerous" or trying to stow it away for themselves, having smashed the minutemen, the railroad and the institute and actually using some primitive reverse engineered synths as soldiers or spies. It would be the same conflict fallout has seen a million times by now-- Just flipped on it's head.
