"To get a better stop, always back your horse up afterward." - That's the faulty advice we're commonly given in order to improve this maneuver. However, we want to talk a little about when and how to back your horse up and work on the stops in a way that gets your horse to WANT to try harder for you instead of dreading the moment you pick up on his face. Backing up after a stop can be a great thing to do, but it can also make your horse quit trying if he feels he can't make you happy.
