We are going to take you for an early look round the new Gigabyte Aorus X870E Master - full review will be live at the end of the month but this may help you get an idea if you want to spend time researching full reviews for this board later. We actually are quite a fan of the Master series so this board has a lot to live up to in our eyes.

That top NVME SSD heatsink looks awfully close to the first PCiE slot there. Even if it doesn't get in the way, I wonder how effective it would be in transferring heat away from the SSD when it's so close to another heat-generating component ie. the GPU backplate.

How is it possible that there is still an NDA on it - the manual with all the details is on the Gigabyte site since the 12th of September and here in Switzerland the board is in stock - if I buy it now I will receive it on the 24th of September .....

Over the years I've had quite a few Gigabyte boards. When Zen 4 launched the only options I had was the Asus Crossfire and a 7950X (bought a 7800x3D later). This is the first time in a long time I feel zero urge or see any reason to "upgrade" anything. I used to buy a lot of motherboards and just resell the ones I didn't want. Those days are gone for now I guess.

7 of my 8 AM5 builds are open box Gigabyte Aorus Elite AX b650/x670. With a local used $120 Asus B650e-e ROG for my 8th. So far besides bloated Gigabyte software I like Gigabyte boards. Big step up since previous x570 Aorus Elite boards. They were simply the best bang for the buck AM5 boards. 4 NVMe drives, excellent VRM, awesome GPU raised latch that is amazing for my Noctua D15 systems. Avg price paid was about $100 for x670 and $70 for b650. My upgrades were all very little out of pocket costs. I wanted to get rid of AM4 hardware quick before market got too saturated. Many am4 to am5 cost me zero out of pocket.

Is there any X870E motherboards out their at this moment that can take at least 3 M.2 Nvme SSD in it without affecting the GPU slot down from 16 to 8? I know the X670E version of this motherboard your showing here up above if you put anything in the top M.2 Nvme slot you do affect the GPU slot down from 16 to 8.

How accessible is the CMOS battery? I can see it half sticking out at the bottom. On the X670E Aorus Master it's a disaster, you have to remove the chipset heatsink and the backplate to get at the battery, which obviously means you have to completely strip down the system and take the board out of the case. A complete disaster if you are watercooling like I am! My first one came with a dead CMOS battery earlier this year, and after I stripped down the system to replace the battery, it was dead again about 3 weeks later! Apparently it's a common issue with the X670E AM boards. But it's interesting that the X870E don't have a backplate like the X670E model does.

The PCIe lanes are distributed so silly. I want a 2*PCIe 5x8 slots board with two non sharing nvme at least. These are becoming very rare even amongst the most ridiculous expensive boards. Also at least one 10gb rj45 is a must for any creator,vand for those prices two should be present
@phant0m92
@phant0m92 14 дней назад
I think the lack of of PCIE slots is a cop out. I know tracing is harder with PCIE-4.0/5.0 but for the prices they charge I'd expect to have at least a couple of 4x PCIE slots at the top of the board for add in cards. This one in particular is a bit better but having the PCIE slots at the bottom means if your hampered in cooling department if you want to do a chimney style cooling system.

@Shadowized 14 дней назад
It looks like a nice board, but the lack of proper 5.1 audio connectors on most X870E is disappointing, at least it uses the ALC1220 unlike most which are switching to that Realtek USB interface ALC40XX setup which is just flat-out worse and prone to issues. The PCI-E release latch seems to be the only thing new these boards really bring to the table. I'm curious to see if the platform has rectified some of the quirks such as long post times without context restore or having to manually key in all timings.
@NyteStalker89
@NyteStalker89 13 дней назад
It's almost as if the average user doesn't use 5.1 audio and manufacturers collect data to back that up, so they cut it out to save themselves cost in manufacturing and part sourcing.
@Shadowized
@Shadowized 13 дней назад
@@NyteStalker89 That's fine. They can continue their cost-cutting stupidity while charging more for less, I'll just buy a better product from their competitors who aren't afflicted by the same level of brainrot. This board has other issues anyway like only being able to use the first top two NVME slots without the PCIE 16x dropping to 8X.

😦🤷‍♂What kind of master board is that? Everything that normally makes up the "MASTER" has been removed...🤦‍♂no backplate. no sensible RAM slots, it looked like a pre-production board, neither luxury accessories nor sensible premium packaging. So that looked like a Gigabyte PRO board at most. Well, I wouldn't buy the junk anyway, for me nothing except ASROCK and ASUS motherboards is an option and ASUS is now too outrageously expensive for me with their ROG nonsense which is totally overhyped and overpriced because of the many mainstream PC enthusiasts who have no idea about hardware but have big wallets.

Absolutely DISAPPOINTING mainboard. I'm sorry to have to say this, Gigabyte. (I'm a Gigabyte mainboard user myself.) A X870E board, a ‘high-end board’, with 4x M.2 slots, 2 of which are shared with the graphics card. So you can only really use two M.2 slots. And this is the case on all X870E boards from Gigabyte listed on the official Gigabyte website (Status: mid-September 2024). The X870 none E-boards (actually ‘newer‘ B650E boards) are even worse, because they have fewer PCIe lanes than the E-boards. And all this because of AMD requirements to install USB 4 on all newer boards. Nobody needs USB 4. Not even me as a creator (and gamer). I'm not going to pay a moon price for a board with such a weakness. You have to be stupid. Not to mention all the other cost-cutting measures. Compare the X870E Master with its direct predecessor. Extreme differences. The X870E is definitely not a purchase recommendation. None of the X870E and X870 boards. If you are looking for a good Gigabyte ‘high-end’ AM5 board, you should rather buy a X670E Master. The price and features are meanwhile okey (and you have 4x completely usable M.2 slots plus 3x PCIe slots for graphics cards and add-in cards). If you need USB 4 40G or faster LAN, you can use an add-in card. Just that simple.

You... can't point those downwards. 4:27.... "another ARGB header, so that's two that you're getting." Gigabyte says you get 4: "4 x addressable RGB Gen2 LED strip headers / 1 x RGB LED strip header." I only see three, two at the top and one at the bottom. Either way, not two headers. 4:32... "4-pin ARGB." That's not ARGB. ARGB is 3 pin. I don't like Gigabyte's decission of having 3 PCIE5 Nvmes at the cost of sharing lanes with GPU. And every motherboard in the X870E-X870 range faces the same issue. Is there something wrong with PCIE 4.0 drives? On the other, Asrock offers just 1 PCIE 5.0 M.2. and a couple of PCIE 4.0 ones. It will bet between the Asrock Nova and the MSI X870 Tomahawk for me. I have yet to check what is the PCIe lane distribution on the Tomahawk.

The money this will cost and it can't even do 7.1 audio. The on-board wifi will be outdated in no time, barely any PCIE expandability. Where have the truly feature rich motherboards gone!?. Too much focus on way over the top VRM and just what the current tech is anyway...

It is sad that you are blocked on what you can tell us about the board but I can go to their website and download the manual. Getting close to my next build in white as the new gigabyte boards come out but they don't make a proper Board below the Master as they all have only 6 layer PCB. I will have to do my research and try to find another name brand. 8 Layer (Low Loss) 6 Layer (Mid Loss) signal loss to the memory.

@NotCommanderShepard

This motherboard is a slight downgrade of the X670E version. For example, the top PCIE x16 slot does not share lanes with the top 2 m.2 gen5 slots (directly connected to the CPU) on the X670E version, so you can populate them both without downgrading the x16 to x8 speeds. Which is what I'm currently doing. On this new one however, you can only use 1 of them. If you use both the CPU controlled m.2 slots, the GPU slot becomes an x8 slot. This isn't an issue for this generation of GPUs or the next, but it looks like the RTX 6090, if that's what Nvidia decides to call it, might be bottlenecked by x8 speeds. So buyers beware.

The difference between this gen and the last is USB and memory stability. It's the same amount of lanes, (for the X870E. They took away the second chipset from the non-E) so I/O will be similar. Just a few less to dedicate to the USB4. Now that WiFi 7 has been out for a while, that should be more popular now. If you have a stable system with X670, there's no point in upgrading. Also, AMD isn't who determines the form factor of the boards. The manufacturers make the boards. If they don't see a point in them, they won't make them.
