I so enjoyed this challenge! What did you think of the compact camera? Which photo did you like the best?
@EnerGeezerSquirrel

I love the "White Angel" shot, not just aesthetically, but having a ZS-80* I'm just surprised the shutter response was sufficiently quick to get her framed just so. It reminds me of a shot I worked on when I worked in a pro lab that a local Montreal photographer, Valerie Simmons, won a major Hasselblad award with, back in the early 90's. Very nice. *[ I think your TZ-80 was called the ZS-70 here in N.A. and is one development below the "80" we have ]

Honestly, all of the pics turned out great! I'm a sucker for skylines, but I'm not quite sure how I feel about the ship. And getting the perfect moment with the girl in the white dress centered in the wings was outstanding! I have a ZS200 and will often take it out in my pocket as a "just in case" camera when I don't feel like taking a larger camera.

Fantastic results and it just shows what is capable with relatively 'budget' gear. Budget photography, of which I'm a great advocate, my cheaoest camera cost me just £4, my Canon SLR kit cost me just £20. I enjoy the challenge of making the best images I can with the cheapest possible gear. My most expensive camera was the Panasonic Lumix TZ70 which is similar to the one you used here but is the 12mp version.

Hi Emily, I bought this TZ80 from new back in 2018. To help I superglued a 35-37 step up ring to the front of the ‘zoom’ to enable a filter to be fitted. To date this is still affixed!. I find it to be a very useful travel camera as you say not the sharpest images but it does capture the moment. The TG4 is a very useful point and shoot too and can be used for those underwater events.

Great content once again. I love my compacts from the Ricoh GX200, Olympus XZ-1, Canon S series (4 of them) all produce lovely images. Then there's the RX100 III and most recently the Canon G9X II. I love them for the portability and quality especially the G9X II. Superb touch screen, speed and IQ in a tiny package that fits in jeans pocket. Of course they don't offer the same speed and IQ as my MFT gear but it's essential to always have a camera to hand and I love compact pocket rockets for that reason.

I have a Lumix ZS100 with a third-party hand grip from a seller on eBay and I bring that everywhere as a second camera. It has shockingly good image quality and it has very acceptable low-light performance, so much so that it is my go-to camera for indoor museums and places that don't allow tripods and when I don't want to haul around my Nikon D850 and lenses. These little cameras are very liberating in many ways.

Another great video, I have the Lumix ZS60 (TZ80), got it refurbished from Amazon 3 or so years ago and love using it. Only wish it had tilt screen but it is still awesome. When I am out an about with just point and shoot cameras, I take this and my recently acquired G7XMii, less zoom and larger sensor. I wanted either a LX10 or LX100 but could not afford them and found the G7X for a great price.

Just seeing this video. This is so cool, Emily! I love all the images - so beautiful to see them printed too! First of all, it's courageous given the cheap camera. Secondly, ingenious to add the filter that way! I would not have thought of it. Great images too! Love the wings, the perfect subject captured at the perfect point. When skill and luck coincide magic happens. I don’t have a point and shoot but I have started using a low mileage Olympus E-P3 with a non functional IBIS and the two body cap lenses for street photography. The results are a technical mess but have character. I am not a professional so I can leave my higher end gear for the occasional important shoot and just play with these toys.

It’s very different to how I would do photography. I like to leave the pictures as close to straight out of the camera as possible, and use manufacturer picture profiles. And crop a bit if I need to. But it’s cool to see how differently you can do it. Everyone’s got their own way and that’s an awesome thing about photography. And I like that you can just hold the filter over the compact camera and it still works fine. I like the reflected one and the landscape a lot. Again, I probably would have just kept the one with the sharp buildings and discarded the other. But your composite does look really good.

That view from the other side of the river overlooking Liverpool Waterfront, is spectacular. Jerry rigging the ND filter really enhanced the shot. I bet that if you mixed some edited images of your compact camera with your GH6 and possibly S5ii, I doubt many would spot the difference, especially if you did not mention the shots were taken on different cameras.

That’s camera I probably should have gotten a few years back when replacing an old, old compact. I went with a 1” sensor Canon, but that means a much smaller zoom range. For what a compact does, I think the reach matters more than the sensor size, by and large. The other two features that really seem great are the EVF, and a minor UI favorite of mine: the option to turn the zoom rocker into a stepped zoom, rather than continuous. I really prefer that, and it’s a pet peeve of mine about my G7X it doesn’t have any similar functions. I’d love for these cameras to go further, and let the zoom rocker be fully customizable-a rocker switch is as good as a control wheel, if customizable.

Based on the prices of compacts skyrocketing, especially those like the G10, G11, and G12 Powershots and others that are CCD based sensors, I'd say the trend has been up for compacts. I collect advanced compacts, both small and large sensor, but have put that on a bit of a hold with how cameras that might have cost me 80 bucks a year or two ago are now 150-250 in worse condition.

Compact cameras are a great complement to your cell phone or M4/3 camera. I recently bought a used/excellent Lumix ZS80 from mpb for my wife to use on an upcoming trip to Africa. It's small size and amazing zoom make it perfect fit for traveling light. My tests with the ZS80 impressed me with the quality of the jpg images straight out of camera, the astounding zoom, and the tiny size. The small sensor requires framing in camera to get best results. Hand held 4k video indoors at evening programs yielded good color, clarity and sound. While not "professional " quality, it was great for capturing family events. During recent sales, the ZS80 has listed new for $400. New or used, the ZS80 is a great value! I was so impressed with the ZS80 that I bought a used/good Lumix ZS100 from mpb. My "Enjoyment Factor" has been enhanced by adding the Lumix ZS100 to my kit. I wanted to travel light on a recent trip to Hawaii. My G9 or G100 were too bulky with lenses. My GX850 with 14-42mm Power Zoom (my favorite pocket rocket) fit in my pocket, but had limited zoom range. The ZS100 with 1 inch sensor and 25-250mm zoom fits comfortably in my pocket. Photos and 4k video were excellent and very close the quality of my m4/3 cameras. I even did astro and low light shots with it! My iPhone was great for selfies and wide angle which was limited to 25mm on the ZS100. The ZS100 hit the "sweet spot" for image quality and pocketability for travel, complementing my iPhone, and hitting the "Enjoyment Factor" of shooting with my m4/3 cameras. I recommend the Lumix 1 inch sensor cameras (ZS100 and ZS200) for micro four thirds photographers who want to keep the image quality and features of their m4/3 cameras in a pocketable "carry camera" . The ZS100 new lists at $500 and ZS200 at $600 new/on sale. Another great value from Lumix!

I bought the TZ80 last year as the event I was going to doesn't allow cameras with detachable lenses, my only regret was not having more time to learn about the camera before the event. That said, considering the distance I was from the action I got some really OK shots, none would win any kind of award but that wasn't the point, it was making memories of his momentous event which the TZ80 did a superb job of. The optical zoom on this camera worked really well, very happy with this little snapper.

My "main" camera is the Lumix S5 and some expensive lenses. I also have this TZ80. Despite the f8 minimum aperture, this camera really does "kick above its weight" in terms of the actual features (too many to mention, so check online). I would suspect that most viewers of the many RU-vid channels dedicated to photography are not professional and, like this presenter, rarely have prints made. This camera is more than capable of producing good results and I do wonder about the need for me lugging around all my other camera gear.

For enhancing the technical abilities of small sensor cameras DXO Photolab Elite does a fantastic job. Small sensor zoom compacts have two major issues lens distortion requiring extensive correction and noise. Most software (LR) uses the optical corrections built into the raw file which is the same as the in camera jpg correction. DXO measure the camera/lens in their optical laboratories and can provide a much betetr optical correction compared to the jpg. You can often get a slightly wider fov at the wide angle from this improved correction as the jpg correction includes a crop. DXO Photolabs DeepPrime/XD raw noise reduction can give you at least 2 stops of improvement over the jpg and this helps to increase the available shooting envelope. Applies to MFT as well as compacts. Might be worth taking a look if you are not already familiar with Photolab Elite?

It does the zoom and macro very well. It has all the options and manual controls the mirrorless models have. I have an addiction to shooting and need to shoot hundreds of photos everyday. Most of which are out doors so the maximum 3.3 aperture is not so bad. Mostly perfect for street. I was looking to get an 80 as a backup but after this video the prices will probably rise. Thanks 😊Please never make a video about the 100 or 200. I would like to buy backups before the price goes up LOL

I picked up the lumix lf1 and tz60 recently and I find I'm carrying them more than my other cameras now that the sun is out. I was very lucky to get both under £50. I'm sure with the digi cam trend prices will shoot up.

Love this style of video Emily, I considered the TZ80 at one point but went with the GX880 and 12-32 /35-100 as my pocket camera for a bit more IQ. My daughter has the TZ100 which is excellent, not quite the zoom range of the TZ80 but a much larger 1" sensor and a bargain when compared with similar spec Sony RX100 models. The blurred photo of the woman in the white outfit and the angel wings was etherial and divine! 😄

It all about how you use the gear. Amazing how instead of using the usual wide aperture/shallow depth of field approach she instead blurred the people with a long exposure! Great work eh.

Interesting! 😃👍 I purchased the TZ-101 a few years ago. It has a 1"-sensor. The advantage compared with a 1/2.3"-sensor is from my point of view that small light sources in night shots aren't "sprayed" out by the reflection from lens to lens on the sensor. (Un)fortunately smartphones are getting better and better (Currently I'm using a Samsung S22 Ultra.) so that my camera catches dust most of the time in the corner. 😥 I'm having a polarizer in my camera bag for getting nice shots of clouds. But currently I'm using the camera mostly for night shots with a tripod. The smartphone is always in my pocket anyway. And Samsung Gallery and Lightroom for Android are available for free. 🤷‍♂️

Great episode. Wonder if this raw capabilities with dxo noise reduction, and gigapixel could make a good match. With new software it’s amazing what you can get from a Raw image. Thanks for the fun!!

I was blown away by the DXO noise reduction. You’re absolutely right, software like that is definitely giving older cameras a new lease of life! I stuck to just the Adobe Lightroom options in this video, but I think you could clean things even more with dedicated software like DXO 😊

Better Call Saal! Beautiful shots. The angle is just perfect. Nearly too much luck to believe that it isn't staged. PS. Got a TZ30 a couple of months ago, the TZ80 is on my wish list.
