He isn't targeting the automobile industry customer. It's mainly ride-sharing and delivery. Companies like Arcimoto, Solo, etc will definitely succeed. Those EV startups won't really. Totally delete Tesla or whatever EV from your mind when you see Arcimoto news.
@osamabinsmokin Then people get small EV's like Renault Zoe, VW E-Up, Electric Smart... the products are already there. Or just take the train or bus. Bigger cities here, people park the car outside the big city on special parking lots for this purpose. Busses go to these parking spots every 10 minuts and the cost is almost nothing. I hear nobody complaining about this solution. Parking your car in the city here can cost up to 5 or more euro each hour. Compared to 1 euro bus travel and park your car out of the city for free.
is the turtle on the half shell design a give away? this is a motor bike for scooting around town. so yes, the partial body with the 60 mph is incongruent as a car, but definitely the conestoga motor wagon motif.
All you people with your stupid absolute comments. This isnt a car, it isnt a motorcycle, its in between both. You want fully weather proof then go buy a car you donkey.
there are many EV's like that, especially in asia. much cheaper, much more practical. This "inventor" is fooling the viewers pretending he invented something and that "nobody is doing this". What a liar.
Might not need any of that stuff if you're storing it over winter... batteries are just not made for winter time... That's okay so if you take the battery out and add it to your house batteries for extra storage during winter time...
An electric elio with no door. No one is going to want this. Too expensive, too unsafe, too short of a range, too long to charge, and awful in bad weather.
Yes. Odd for a vehicle designed in a rainforest state. I see there are extra options for "half doors" and some kind of enclosed rear seat (maybe, the website isn't clear and suggests that's for cargo carriers) but if I'm shelling out US$20,000 (CDN$27,000) for a vehicle I don't want to have to wear my cycling rain gear to stay dry.
Well, I found this as well: "Will there be other door options? Yes! We’ll be working on a number of door options, including full enclosures. These future options will all be designed to be compatible with the current Evergreen vehicles." Still, the pricetag puts this thing in the class of "rich person's toy".
@@anthonyrosa5006 Of course. People want every option they can get. I understand that. And it will matter to some people, more or less than others, whether the efficiency stays high or not.
The fact that Bloomberg even compared this to Tesla shows how far up their ass they are. Tesla is at least 20 years ahead of this design. Don't act like that fact isn't extremely obvious.
@@jurivlk5433 ahahaha people who care more about the environment and traffic efficiency, rather than the price of the vehicle and space you get, I guess? That targets lots of people in the developed world. In Europe they already use the velomobile, which is kind of the same thing but you can also pedal, and prices are even higher. Many people have them. If I had to choose between a tuktuk or this, I'd have this too. But you know, it's economy. Some people will want it, it will make no sense for others.
I am also in this field. I believe that they produced in 3 years. then, 8 years they always upragade quality of the car. such as, more better battery, better disc brakes, better aerodynamic etc. These is endless development...
Yes I agree this design is simple to get make a prototype type in your garage in a year but there will always be updates you want to incorporate forever
We have had these kookie things on the road here in Vancouver for years and years, and they have doors, added bonus. Check out Electra Meccanica Bloomberg.
@@SteveLedger They should have made it a hybrid and sell it for $12,000 to make it cheaper than even economy cars with an EZPZ 80 mpg. Otherwise people will just prefer an economy car since it has ample room for groceries without having to purchase another vehicle, extra insurance, and extra vehicle property taxes.
Steve Ledger nice but only a single seater. You can’t take your wife with you. Also it will be made in China vs the states. America makes a far higher quality motor vehicle vs China. It is not even close. China’s automotive industry is light years behind be gaining quickly.
I think, its a 4 battery 48v system with 0.5 kW motor. Should weigh 750kg (acid batteries) .. I am really not sure abt uphill but just maybe. It's a public carrier. They cram up to abt 9 people in one go. You may even get it for any 1k USD.
Electric bike with trailer / basket = Under $750, no insurance, no additional costs. Can put it on the front of a bus rack and ride on bike trails apart from traffic. This thing: For people who have money for an off lease Nissan Leaf but like getting wet. Lol
@@JustWasted3HoursHere It is really easy to extend range on an e-bike with an additional battery, and the speeds are great with only moderately priced motors.
goodfella21f Never been able to drive my lawn mower over the cascades. This is really ridiculous engineering. They need to do better. Not sure you can get it licensed. Bumper issues dash ect.
1,200 is unrealistic even if it was using the cheapest materials. Regardless, it's ridiculous he charging over 10k for it. Ali Express has dozens of electric trikes going for around 3-4k. He should just make it fancier and increase the cost accordingly. It's clearly just a toy for someone with a lot of money to spend.
This is hands down the worst automative innovation...if you even want to call it that. If you've been anywhere OUTSIDE THE US, you would know theres cars like this all over. This guy makes it electric and all of a sudden hes Albert fucekn Einstein. Try again.
Gtfo with your anti american views. Been around the world seen many things and rarely you will see this type of vehicles. Mostly you will see in London. Thats it.
@@hukumbra I'm just curious about two things here. What's your level of education? Also, where do you get your sources/information from? I hope actual fact-based articles and not just based on false personal realizations.
While it's cute and all, if I were to drive around in one of those here in L.A. it'd be only a matter of time until I was FUV-jacked due to the lack of doors.
Yeah, because California is a communist state that won't allow their citizens to carry a pistol for personal defense. So, yeah, only the bad guys/gals get guns in your state, & therefore, they can happily car/FUV-jack you without any worry of you busting a CAP in their ass. Here in Texas on the other hand, your FUV would be your electro safe space. Cuz we Texans pack heat gaw'dammit!
yeah, why are they all open? Why not make it closed and with heater, then you can drive it all year, without coat/hat/goggles/scarve/gloves. Is it a insureance/regulation thing?
Ok then this thing has no doors, no air conditioning or heating and the crash safety of this vehicle is questionable. I’m sure the future is electric but this one just isn’t a serious car to be honest. A hybrid or a electric car with a petrol engine (range extender) will be a better for for the market but that’s just me.
I don't know. If you launch your electric car into orbit between the Earth and Mars you can pretty much do as you please. Except rape. And murder. Just ask -------.
Sure, this works great if you're in a city (your job is 15 mins away) and you have no possessions. But if you have to ride long distances and have things like kids or other material stuff to carry around, riding a bike isn't practical lol.
For us? Sure it is! But imagine some people that really doesn't wanna ride a bike (or never ride one and never will).. this product is for them.. and for bikers like us, maybe we could buy this thing and use it for our daily activities like shopping, getting our kids from school, get some dinner, etc..
I feel like they don’t lost their fucking minds. Just like Apple. I’m not paying that kind of money. The budget phone is 750 well that’s not us less of the appellees I just don’t give a fuck I am paying $900 I’m not paying the thousand and I’m not paying 750 for something that really less. I’m going back to Blackberry
Yeah, theres a handful of small towns in the United States and Canada where people can use golf carts to get around. Also I've heard in some places in the United States youre allowed to drive ATVs on the side of the highway
You don't really need AC when you're driving around fast in an open air vehicle in most places. If you have an e-bike you can plug in a USB heated vest or gloves. You could plug a heated massage seat into this vehicle.
His idea has come to the market 11 years too late. Renault has already tried that similar concept with the Twizy. The Twizy, and now this Arcimoto, is not the type of electric vehicle that people are crying for. People want a proper car, a cheap electric vehicle, with doors, a roof, and boot, and a long battery range. The Arcimoto is simply one of those many toys that well off people buy as a third or fourth car. Maybe it will sell, I don't know. I doubt that though. I still wish the guy all the luck nonetheless.
OK, I have a reservation in, and am awaiting delivery in San Diego. I've seen tons of video about the CEO, the company, and the vehicles. This is the first one that has a cannabis vibe. Makes me wish I already have my FUV, so I can make a run.
Better be cheap or this invention could die.. because this kind of vehicle doesn't have a market / competitor yet... and people often consider to buy a car if this vehicle is expensive because car has 'normal' looks on the road.. Or maybe this company could collaborate with others company to make an Online taxi or delivery for quicker and cheaper way to move a person / cargo to another places because electric vehicles usually more cost-effective compared to gasoline vehicles..
This guy is trying to solve a problem that only intelligent people ever think about. Just because it works doesn’t mean it will sell. Looks cool but I’d immediately have a hard time getting behind it if I were a possible investor, just on this surface issue alone.
A lot of people not digging it but most seem to miss a few things: 1. No doors/winter concerns. You're not as exposed to the elements as you might think - It has heated seats and grips that you can turn on remotely and the glass is shaped so you dont feel the wind or get blown to pieces when travelling at 80mph. You also dont get very wet. Of course it is still exposed to the elements and this is a downside but the upside is in spring, summer, autumn you have an awesome open vehicle. Full doors are also coming later this year. 2. The price. Yes it's initially expensive to buy but the running costs are very small compared with other vehicles in the price range, so it's actually cheaper than it seems. Also being electric it's going to depreciate waaaay slower and not as far - most other vehicles in this price bracket will eventually depreciate to nothing. I like it!
You crash into another car and you are DEAD! You roll down a hill and you are DEAD! You go on a highway and you are DEAD! You have to drive your family but don’t have room for your mother in law... then you are most definitely DEAD! This type of car has been a concept before with the Elio, the Electra Mechanica, and many more. They never scale because these “auto cycles” are not as safe as cars and they cost as much as a used Toyota from just 5 years ago. This is not a serious contender...just another niche company that will go bankrupt.
electric bikes are great, I love mine. But on the freeway? They suuuuuuuuuuuck. The main downside of electric motorcycles is they are really dangerous. The archimoto is a motorcycle that adds weather protection, a roll bar cage, and a third wheel for stability in winter conditions. Pretty brilliant.
fun toy, but so is a motorcycle. 4 wheels and 5 people can be put into a smaller lighter package, but china and japan and korea are already occupying that market.
Only because everyone else on the road is surrounded by 2 tons of steel. It's all relative. If this FUV crashed into a motorcycle then the equation changes.
@@Phrancis5 lmao, that's not the point at all dork. I live in Colorado and yesterday we had windspeeds the flipped those 2 ton SUVs. You really think this would survive for a second in that? Any slightly shitty road conditions and this is nothing but a road hazard.
The reason we use an 'overcapacity' unit like an SUV to travel short distances alone carrying little stuff is not because more appropriate transportation is not available. It's because people need the SUV a couple times a month but can't afford two vehicles. Mostly because the insurance costs double. Partly because many people only have space to park one vehicle. The correct solution is to buy what you need 90% of the time and rent a truck or SUV when you need it. But most people can afford the overcapacity SUV.
lol, trikes are inherently unstable (anything with three legs is), especially when cornering. This thing would become a death trap trying to corner at speed, because the wheels can't lean like a motorcycle, they turn like a car, which is going to cause the back-end of the crapimoto to tip over.
@@fieldo85 you're confusing normal trikes with trikes that have 2 on the front. And I could show you a trike with 2 on the front whose wheels act like those of a bike (Piaggio MP3, steering) But these are clearly put way out there to fix that issue. Also, if you compare normal trikes to bikes and say that, it is mostly true because the weight of windshield and roof sets a higher centre of mass. Therefore, if you want such a hipotetical vehicle to have 2 wheels it would still be as unstable as the trike you say is unstable.
But we already have those for waaay cheaper. In fact, you can put a $300 electric motor and battery from ebay onto a bicycle and get a 60+ km range and avoid paying monthly insurance.
Nope! Open to weather and cold, and critically $12000 just won't cut it, sorry, please bare in mind that you are trying to get car drivers in this thing, they won't swap warm, dry car for this!! WTF 🤔
In Europe we have had the Twizzy since years, still not very many around though. The thing is you would want both: that and a real car, but you don't have the space. These cars should come with easy rental schemes.
Haha! This is America. We've all got three car garages. Enough for two full-size cars and space left over to store all those Beanie Babies! Interesting you should mention the rental side--that is exactly Arcimoto's roll-out model. But not for domestic use. For vacation locations.
This would make a great 2nd car in a family. Low cost, safer than a bicycle. Bikes ARE targets where I live. I like this idea better than a bmw i3 w/o range extender.
Need to add a light duty trailer hitch for all that stuff that people are driving around in those over big cars which they need only once and awhile. With a light duty trailer one can do all sorts of things from carrying extra passengers, cargo and maybe a range extending battery. The thing about a trailer is that it be for special occasions or everyday. One does not even need to own it in that trailers can be rented. The one thing that is needed is a trailer hitch so a trailer can be used. With a trailer hitch, there is never a need for a larger car since the small car can easily become bigger.
I agree it should be able to pull a light trailer however it might be limited to what it could pull especially with hills since the electric motor is rated at I think 81 BHP. They do have a version with a bigger battery pack
Kind of a shame, because the founder wants to provide a solution to a real problem, and his ideas have great merit. They didn't get overly technical during this interview but I would assume this vehicle has respectable specs for what it is. But sadly, this design is so poor this guy will probably end up declaring bankruptcy on Arcimoto during the next recessionary cycle (whenever that arrives). A 2 seater novelty vehicle without doors, isn't fast enough to appeal to the "extreme" crowd, not enough utility for eco-loving middle-aged moms, many hipsters are going to rather bike/longboard etc, and I think the masses would find it annoying to need to "bundle" up to contend with the no doors, making it a semi-seasonal vehicle? Who was their target consumer here? Those rare individuals who want a glorified street legal golf cart will probably opt for a 4 seater vehicle or one with more "cool factor". And for how niche the vehicle is, if they want any success at all they have to figure out how to bring the price down, because this isn't a car-replacement, this is a supplemental vehicle, meaning apartment renters likely won't be buying them if they have a single parking space. This is essentially only going to work for the middle to upper-middle-class home-owning family who for some reason wants to spend 12k on a supplemental summer vehicle but this only has 2 seats so it doesn't exactly scream "family friendly" either. They need to hire a designer with automotive industry experience, I could see something like this having great success if it was designed more like an electric Polaris Ranger, make it a fun-filled, street legal, adult electric go-cart. Or put doors on the thing at a minimum, although I find the vertical seating layout to be the primary feature screaming "change me", you cannot defend it or relate it to motorcycle seating because it is nothing like a motorcycle, there is a certain feeling of awkwardness that comes from "throne" seating in that setup. This is a prime example of a great idea poorly executed. It would be hard to make that vehicle successful even at a 5k price point. They will need to find economies of scale to get that price level down, however there probably won't be enough demand to warrant the production necessary to reduce the price by that much. Hopefully the owner collaborates with another company or at least reads some of these comments to gather ideas on where he can take the company before they get over-invested in this particular design. I don't mean to shit on these guys but it sounds like they spent 11 years developing a vehicle with no idea of who their target audience was going to be, on the assumption it would be successful because it "solves a problem". This is a mistake myself and many other entrepreneurs have made.
There is a lockable trunk on the 17k version. You could also strap it in the back seat or get the single seat version with the back storage compartment ( think pick up).
Bit like a Renault twizy..... What do you do when it rains? Or have to pick up both kids? I agree it's a fantastic way to zip around.... But I have a motorcycle for that. Best of luck it is a very hard market to crack
yes, I think the Toyota iroad is a better implementation for an EV. If this was more like a car, less like a bike I think more people would consider it, still looks fun though.
your idea is right on, but , as a life long rider, now age 52, I think you made a huge mistake with a 3 wheeler. They cannot avoid bumps, they tip easily, rear end blow out on corners will most likely lead to casualties. You need 4 wheels for the average , very stupid American.
Trump's first 2020 rally was very odd and sad at the same time. He started screaming about Hillary, like she was still running against him. Then, his supporters took to RU-vid screaming Hillary should be crucified! It was bizzare! It was like they just walked out of a 2016 rally and was still trying to beat Hillary. Bizzare and pathetic at the same time. Three years and Trumps greatest accomplishment was 2016? The people in the rally haven't realized, or just dont care that in 3 years he hasn't given them anything to celebrate. SAD....SAD...SAD....SAD.... LOCK TRUMP UP 2020!
Bloomberg could not be more wrong! BYD already HAS won the electric vehicle challenge - not just with Tesla, but with every other car and bus manufacturer. ALL of our taxis are electric SUVs. So are many of our buses. I live in Shenzhen (China), the high tech capital of the country, with 14 million people. The bus I took today mornign was an electric one (about 1/5th of the buses are electric). Most are made by BYD - but all the electric scooters that zip around the pavements are made by a dozen companies - TailG etc. All BECAUSE of the subsidies given by the government (tax payer's money - I am one of the tax payers thought I am not Chinese). Not because of BYD and these companies alone. While Americans were busy in 1990s and 2000s "investing" in dot com ponzis, thereafter real estate ponzis, CDSs, CDOs and MBSs, the government and companies here were investing in hardware that could improve the lives of its people. The result is seen on the streets of Shenzhen, and many smaller Chinese cities - odd that even Bloomberg (and Yip - of Google talks) are still unaware of this in 2019!
Who wants to wear 1939 swimming goggles while driving their car? I don’t imagine many women wearing expensive make-up and then the goggles to ride to the store or mall in this thing. 😂😂 So it’s a Tuk-Tuk/moped without a gas engine? Dude you want $12 grand for this scooter? I’m better off and much safer buying an actual used $8 k compact car with low miles like a Hyundai Elantra, Camry, Sonata, Mazda, Accord, Civic, Corolla etc and have airbags, sensors, waterproofing and able to go over 60mph if need be during all weather conditions. I’m talking about getting a whole car with everything for under $12 even a certified used one. A SmartForTwo is much safe than this gimmick. I highly doubt that people living in cities will be lined up outside waiting in line to buy these. Those who buy will only do so for the cool factor but not to save on gas/the planet or convenience. 😉
I want to see it on a skid pan. The wheelbase is a bit short, like "my" Renault 11 that spun around and then rolled on a slightly slippery? bend + that s Peugot 305 had no trouble with. .. and zilch luggage space, but very Arty, "Car-tooni ?", lines. I'm going to make likewise a 3 wheeler, the advantage of that being very simple, rear wheel, steering, with 3 200 watt panels for the roof. Lithium battery, of course, and two 500 watt front wheel motors. Maybe an old Sofa for the seating ? and lots of recycled plastic bottles for the "body"/weather shields, bent steel tube framework. - or convert some lightweight car that can have panels for a roof, and maybe tow some more behind it. This will require an electronics project, DC to variable frequency and voltage 3-phase, motor supply - unless we are happy with a DC brush motor. Somehow I think we will be !!
No crap I just wanted an Elio but we somehow can't figure that out. I'm throwing shade on this vehicle, I'm a motorcyclist through-and-through but my wife would never get on this except on the nicest day and with no where to go. Seriously, this is 80% of an Elio but I can't go to most places in daily life and smell like the road/road-grime-from-winter-road-salt-mist-slime-cow-crap spray coat. Uh, no.
Piaggio has a model that could have been the platform to build on. Living in the Philippines part time, as a native Washingtonian, I love these small vehicles. They get me out of the Jeepneys and can go into tight spaces. Am looking into buying a diesel that gets around 120 miles/gallon & leaving it with relatives in the RP. While it's not electric, the miles per gallon make it appealing. And at 4.5 to 5.5K with air-con, would love to buy one here as well. Spending 12 K makes it a luxury and out of reach of most people. We need real solutions.
This has alot more in common with a mail order electric moped from China than it does a Tesla. Tesla has done ALOT of r&d that other companies now use, and they make a damn nice car. Being electric dosen't put it on the same plane as a Tesla. However this guy makes a great point about people driving around with a V8 Suburban that can seat 8 and pull 7,000 lbs but 99% of the time, its just one or two people in the car. In southern California its a depressing scene really. Miles and miles of traffic doing crawling speeds, basically just idling while using about 5% of the vehicles capabilities. But really the alternative is to ride a motorcylcle. Its the original PTV and really is all you need to transport yourself from a-b. While a small EV would be great for the winter, not having doors kind of puts it in the motorcycle category anyway. I agree with the thesis but not the design so much...
