Could Osmaston Mill be Britains Most Beautiful?
In this video i pop to the Village of Osmerton, near Ashbourne in Derbyshire to find and look at Osmerton Mill. Built in the 1850s and worked until the 1980s as a sawmill.
Now abandoned but maintained i take a look as best i can using drone footage and ground footage when possible.

This is indeed, most impressive. It is definitely a most beautiful looking building and it is great that everything is still there. It is a shame that it is no longer used and it would be great if it would be restored to water propulsion which would save money on the cost of electricity and would still be able to be used during times of power cuts. Thank you for bringing us this very interesting and informative video presentation which is very much appreciated.

Certainly very beautiful - a Swiss chalet-type saw mill in Britain must be unique. Looks like the water wheel could be easily restored to working order. I wonder how much of the machinery survives - and whether they have 'open days'?

Firstly the sawmill is NOT abandoned! It is unused but is still part of the Osmaston estate. The mill was primarily used to pump water up to two small reservoirs on the opposite hill which was then piped down to Osmaston Manor. The reservoirs were segregated into lake water for the gardens and horses etc and spring water for the house. The buildings in the yard are the blacksmiths (with the chimney) and a cart shed opposite. Its quite likely there was a wheel wright on site too.The small open 'shed ' next to the mill is actually a creosote pit where fence posts were soaked. The wheel also provided power via belts and shafts to the saws. There is nothing at all in the upper part of the sawmill but there is still some machinery downstairs, water pumps which are mainly underground. Ive never heard of the wheel being powered by an electric motor! Why would you power a water wheel with electricity when there is an abundant supply of free water? I the logical answer is the electric motors were later used to power the saws. The whole roof was replaced about 10-15 years ago and the wooden gutters were also renewed. I like your responsible attitude regarding not trespassing and excellent use of your drone! Well done.

Great video as always and really enjoyed it. Quick question re the “drone”, if the property is private and you can’t walk on it, is it legal to fly the drone around it. Don’t have a drone so not sure what the legal rules are !

Thanks very much. I don't know the exact answer although if it had been lived in, occupied I wouldn't have flown around it so closely

@@TrekkingExploration Just thinking here. How about a vid or two on heritage railways, maybe The North Yorkshire Moors Railway or The West Highland Railway, there are so many to pick from. These are just some ideas -- you're to Boss. You could walk outside around the train yard and walk through some of the yard buildings and/or museums. Again, just thinking.
