I taught my daughter how to shoot a handgun with a small .22 revolver. She learned basic safety, trigger control and became proficient. Inexpensive ammo and low recoil meant she got to shoot a lot. I’ve been shot (accidentally) with a .177” pellet from a 7-8 ftlb muzzle energy air rifle and not only it hurt like a MFer, it totally focused me on the bleeding hole in my leg and not what I was doing 5 seconds early. I didn’t hear the air rifle discharge or know it was pointed as me, so I imagine that I would react to seeing and hearing someone shooting at me on its own would see me running screaming into the distance.

You're not allowed "any type of firearm"? In Australia there are most certainly restrictions on what type of firearm maybe owned and used by who and for what purposes. But unless you have an extensive history of crime/ violent offences or a mental illness, you are most certainly eligible to acquire a category A/B and H license, here. There are approximately 1,000,000 licensed firearm owners in Australia and approximately 4,000,000 firearms. We are "allowed" to own them.

I have a LCR 38. Carried it for a long time in my pocket. But later I got a LCP 2 in 22LR, and that’s what I now carry. It’s a defensive sacrifice to carry 22LR, but it has the capacity advantage of being 10+1. Also it’s so light that I’m more likely to actually put it in my pocket before I leave home. Neither gun is terribly accurate at distance.

Thanks for the video Hickok45. Enjoyed it as usual. I'm 73 and my first gun back in the 60's was a Savage over/under .22/.410. The .22 is popular for a number of reasons: 1) least expensive at 5 - 7 cents/round, 2) never in short supply at a gun shop or on-line, 3) small and lightweight so you can stuff many boxes into your ammo can or pockets (e.g. 50 rounds .22LR = 6oz vs. 50 rounds .45LC = 2+ lbs), 4) many manufacturers so you have lots to choose from, from standard velocity to mini-mag, round nose or hollow point, 5) a plethora of .22 arms available such as single shot, revolver, semi-auto, bolt, pump, AR-15 style, 6) choice of shorts, Long, or Long Rifle though Longs are hard to come by, 7) a good caliber for neophyte shooters or those who have problems with recoil, 8) lastly, a versatile all-round caliber for target shooting, small game hunting and plinking that's been around for almost a century and a half.

A .22 revolver or "tackle box" gun is one of the most useful yet underrated guns you will ever own. I've put way too many .22 bullets down range and taken too many small game animals with a .22 revolver to ever be convinced otherwise. The next step up for me was .38 Special. For woods bums and woods loafers a .22 and a .38 Special with properly chosen ammunition are both almost magical for anything except dangerous animal defense. And a .38 Special can, with hard cast SWC +P be some what effective on stuff bigger than you would at first guess assume.

I have a.nice .22 revolver myself. It is a model 94 Taurus which is basically the same frame as my model 85 Taurus in .38 Special. When you are shooting the .22 it is exactly like shooting the .38 but with a tiny fraction of the recoil or expense of shooting the larger .38 special. They even use the same exact grips so if I upgrade the grips on the .38 I can put identical grips on the .22 as well. The .22 is a fun plinking gun but it can also be a good training gun and in a pinch could work in self defense if one had hand strength issues due to an injury or medical condition.

I suspect that depends on your circumstances (esp where you live and work) and your risk tolerance. I suspect the chance of having a bad outcome in a defensive encounter because one does not have a back up handgun is pretty low, much lower than the already low chance most people will have an encounter where a handgun is needed. I am not saying one shouldn't carry a back up or that others haven't found need of them. Should one also wear flame resistant suit and carry a fire respirator? Of course, some people would be well justified in doing so.

.22LR 1. Can any firearm, under extreme circumstances, be pressed into a role that it was not meant for and though less than the ideal solution, still be very viable and effective alternative? Of course! The .22LR however, for self defense purposes, is not one of them. It’s at best, as a last ditch option of last resort! 2. Never ever a first choice for a defensive weapon, defensive weapon of last resort 1. Underpowered 2. Relatively Unreliable compared to centerfire ammunition 3. You’re going to be out gunned by any centerfire rifle cartridge and by any centerfire PCC 4. .22LR for self defense is a last resort and last ditch effort not a first choice. 5. If you’re using .22LR for self defense then you’ve made some serious tactical mistakes. 3. It has its place 4. SHTF/Zombie Apocalypse 5. Hunting Small Game 6. Cheap 7. Lightweight 8. Can carry lots of ammunition 9. Ubiquitous 10. I don’t know that I would acquire .22LR solely as part of a planned defensive strategy. Instead, if I had copious amounts of .22LR for other purposes, I would determine how it can be best used that way in case it’s necessary, even though acquired for different purposes. 11. While it can be deadly in a defensive scenario, it’s strategically employed as a “Threat management tool” at best, supplementing your main weapon system (conserving more expensive less on hand ammunition, although you should be properly prepared and equipped anyway) and attempting to persuade threats to go elsewhere (force a break in contact with the enemy) with the the perfect execution of specific tactics designed to maximize the .22LR’s potential. But make no mistake it’s should not be relied upon as a replacement for a real defensive weapon like .223/5.56, 7.62x39 or .308 battle rifle to effectively neutralize a determined adversary 12. You get .22LR for reasons other than self defense and it’s only as an afterthought and last resort for defensive reasons. However if you find yourself relying on .22LR it’s worth considering how to maximize its potential and how to best strategically employ it. See#8. As opposed to relying on it as a primary “ go to” option 13. Have no illusions about.22LR 14. Everything has its place, but you must consider if spending resources on that thing is worth it or is spending the resources on something else better option 15. Don’t confuse possibility with probability 16. All else being equal .22LR loses

While you have some points a .22lr revolver (like a SP101 or a GP100 since the SP101 isnt in production in .22lr right now)/bolt action rifle would (and will be after the mandatory year of shooting in a gun club which i started last month) MY first choice. I prefer having a .22lr that isnt picky on the ammo type with cheap ammo (around 5-10€ for 50 rounds) that lets me train with it until im very accurate with it over a "better" gun which i dont use as often due to the ammo being more costly (18-30€ for 9mm which is the next cheapest round). But since we arent allowed to carry at all and there are A LOT of hurdles for self defense with guns (basically its illegal because you will most likely face charges or at least lose your weapons/ gun license when using them) its a moot point. If youre able to use them you face charges because you didnt store them as required by law. And if you did store them properly you face charges because it isnt self defense anymore when you had the time to get to your gun safe, open it, take the gun, take the ammo AND load the gun.
