There's an amusing take on this in Brendan Behan's Borstal Boy. Don't have the exact text but the prison warden is taking the piss and says to Brendan I bet you can't even name the Six Counties. Brendan does know but he messes up deliberately saying I didn't want to disappoint the old bastard which was rather nice as I think he was only 16you at the time.
Love the way old boomers slag off kids these days for being obtuse and uneducated, yet they consistently outweigh their older counterparts pound for pound in terms of wisdom and knowledge. Got a lot of faith in the youth/next generation. Far more than the old duffers that knacker up their kids futures.
Dubs wouldn't get the 26 counties right nevermind the 6 counties.I remember years ago there was a GAA draw on the Radio and roscommon and armagh were drawn to play each other and the dublin ladies player Ciara trant was asked her opininion she said it should be a tense encounter because they are neighbouring counties.
@@patricksweeney5308 No they would have a better idea,because of the GAAs greater social impact ,it still wouldn't be perfect.I think generally sport is a good education tool in terms of geography many people know countries because of sport
'Armagh and Antrim, Londonderry and Down, Tyrone and Fermanagh remain true to the crown, they remember Lord Carson and his famous reply, no home rule for Ireland and Ulster won't die'- that's personally how I remember the six counties.
Well they just people on street ask anyone in England to name Northern Ireland counties and they get wrong you can call it North of Ireland since North of Ireland Ireland the island
Hardly bother loyalists or unionists what people from what they consider to be a foreign country think one of the counties of Northern Ireland is called
@@beaglaoich4418 different currency, political system, different language, different anthem and different flag to name a few things. If that’s not foreign country then I don’t know what is. Just because they share a land border does not make them the same country. As far as I’m aware France considers Germany Spain Italy Belgium and Luxembourg foreign countries.
@@scotc6 my lived experience is that’s not really as true as you may feel or think it is and I don’t think it has been the case that there’s a perception of being in a different state unless direct interactions with the apparatus of state. Also I’m pretty sure we speak the same language, but I promise I’m not throwing shade at Ulster Scot’s cause I do think there’s a case to be made that it may go further than a dialect to a separate language.
