All true and all spot on!!! Don’t let the lack of tools slow you down. You will gain tools one at a time as you go and before you know it you’re 15 years down the road with a full shop full of tricks and kit.

You not only have great content, but also great advice! Everything I've made so far I either donated to a youth organization to raffle off, or I made it for family and friends. Back in the mid 70's to mid 80's I was, what I called, a hornsmith. I made custom engraved powderhorns for the blackpowder shooting sport my wife and I competed in. My wife made the costumes for the family that were from 1755 to 1855. Everything had to be true reproductions. I made the engraved horns by order only. They were personalized for the customer who ordered one. At every shoot that we camped at I had a "Trade Blanket" with my wares for all to see. But, to get orders for horns I would demonstrate and have samples of the different stages of the craft. I also would sit at a table doing engraving on a piece of horn. I also made all the hardware for each horn. Some people call it scrimshaw, but that is actually done on ivory. Engraving is done on horn. I had to spend hours researching the craft before I could make the first one successfully. Back then I only knew of one other person in our part of New York that did that craft. Neither one of us used power tools. They were all made by hand. I also did all the leatherwork of the periods. I learned that from my father as a kid. He was a shoemaker who had a shoe repair shop. I was 7 years old when i started hand sewing leather. I'm 70 now lol. I enjoyed hearing your advice...it was sound! Take care my Friends!

Thanks Michael, always great to get an insight into your background. It's sounds like you have had a background in creating from a young age. It seems to be becoming an increasingly rare thing. We've had my youngest son in the workshop all the week because he's had chicken pox and is off school. It's great to have Him around what we are doing and finding different jobs that he can have a go at. He absolutely loves it and keeps asking what job can he do next! I hope all is going well with the wood carving. Thanks as always for sharing your own background in hand crafting and supporting our RU-vid channel. All the very best from us all. 👍👍

Thanks Jerry, always great to hear from you. It all starts with a passion and pricing is definitely an art form in itself. It's especially challenging at the moment because the prices of everything keep rising so quickly. Hope all is well with you, thanks as always for your support. All the very best from us all. 👍👍

Great information, as always. I like to make items for charities to auction. It's amazing how that can turn into people asking to buy your products.

Always appreciate these videos, filled with knowledge and inspiration🙏 I have begun to use reclaimed furniture as well, but I think my personal problem is that I tend to give away my art. I get too excited and gift them away😔🙃

Thank you!! Always great to hear from you, hope all is well. I enjoy making and giving things as gifts too. I have to treat it as two separate things though. For us to continue what we do we have to put the business brain into gear first and that does afford us time to occasionally make a few gifts too. Not as often as I used to but as and when I can. I like to make gifts for our boys teachers, sports teams etc. We're finding it harder to get hold of old furniture since covid because our local auction has stopped. Charity shops are always worth a look though. Thanks as always for supporting our RU-vid channel. Delighted to hear that the video was useful. All the very best from us all. 👍👍

I really enjoy videos like this. I'm in IT but am trying to learn woodcarving and make it a business. These videos are very encouraging. I really like how it is a family trade at your shop that is being passed down. A lot of that went away in the past couple hundred years. Hopefully we see it return!

Glad you enjoyed the videos. That's very much the driving force behind our content, encouraging anyone who is interested to start making things in wood. I have been working on several videos recently that focus on getting into wood working as a business. Let me know if there are any specific areas you would like us to focus on and we can do a video based on it. Thank you again for supporting our RU-vid channel, all the very best from us all. 👍👍

@@DailovespoonsThomas I'm currently thinking of saving for and purchasing the sjoberg smart vise because I am using clamps and a spoon and shave horse, but would much prefer a vise like what you all use. Some tips on setting up a beginner bench for love spoon and other small project carving would be helpful.

In my experience, soft woods aren't ideal for carving any detail because the wood breaks off way too easily.

Spot on Ken, difficult to get a clean cut with soft wood. Not easy when it comes to getting a quality finish off the chisel or gouge. Thanks as always for your support, all the very best from us all. 👍👍

Is there a particular brand of wood carving tools you recommend? I bought a 6 piece inexpensive one and I cannot cut wood with them. I have tried sharpening, but watching how you cut through wood, I have to wonder if I just do not have a good tool.

Hi, great to hear from you. The quality of steel makes a huge difference when it comes to wood carving chisels and gouges. The inexpensive beginners sets are fine to try out wood carving and see if you enjoy it but they are usually very limited. I work with vintage wood carving chisels and gouges. Mainly made in London and Sheffield. The makers are Herring Bros or anything by the Addis family. Not easy to get hold of these tools but you can try searching for vintage wood carving chisels on Ebay. If you are looking at other options you could check out tools made by Robert Sorby, Henry Taylor and Ashley Iles. These are not the same quality as the vintage chisels and gouges but certainly very capable tools. Pheil is another popular choice but not one that I am familiar with the myself. Hope that give a little insight, thanks for supporting our RU-vid channel. All the very best from us all. 👍👍

Become a problem solver. Figure out how to do more with less. Rarely did I have the proper tools for the task at hand, but I made it work. From that I learned new tricks, I certainly failed as well. We do not learn near as much from success as we do from failure.

Always learning, that's a big part of why we all love doing what we do. Problem solving is definitely a big part of the process when it comes to working with wood too. Thanks as always for sharing your thoughts. Looking forward to seeing your next upload. All the very best from us all. 👍👍
