Despite numerous warnings not to, we took a sleeper bus in China.
We have experienced high speed trains, regular trains, buses and now sleeper busses.
We travel from Kunming in Yunnan, and head down towards Mohan, near the Loas border which we will then attempt to cross.

Long-distance buses must rest at service areas from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m., as required by regulations, to prevent safety hazards while driving at night. This regulation has been implemented in China for many years.

@@ElZilchoYoagain any weird regulation in China comes from a bloody tragedy. There was an overnight bus crashed into the wall at the entrance of a tunnel only 2 or 3 ppl survived out of 50+ ppl, everyone else died in that accident because of the driver was too tired. Since then all busses must rest between 2 and 5 am.

Some rules for the long distance bus drivers here: 1. 2-5 am, not allowed to drive 2. Max continuous driving time: 4 hours during the day, 2 hours at night. At most 8 hours in total for 24 hours, 44 hours in a week. 3. Every stop must be longer than 20 mins 4. Snoring is ok. :) These all for avoiding drowsy driving but definitely improved a lot of price. Safety always comes first here in China.

your experiences actually are heavily related to one particularly deadly accident. at midnight 08/26/2012, an accident involving a sleeper bus killed 36 of 39 onboard. many were unable to escape due to poor safety of this kind of buses. this accident shocked the entire nation so the governmment later decided to stop producing new sleeper buses. also, regulations then requires all overnight buses to stop from 2am to 5am to prevent fatigue, and installs gps stuff on comertial buses to ensure that. drivers are not allowed to drive continously for too long, and they clock-in their rotations using some cards which explains why the bus stopped every 2hrs or so. basically this is why people talk you out of these buses, they are notoriously unsafe.

According to Chinese law, It's mandatory to stop the long-haul bus at midnight to have a rest from 2-5am, and every 2 hours drive in the night time must take a rest at the service area for at least 20 minutes, and every 4 hours drive in the daytime must take a rest at the service area for 20 minutes; There's alarm system device mounted in the long-haul bus that the driver must click the button once every certain minutes(not sure how many exact minutes) otherwise the alarm will put on and report it the bus company and traffic police station so that the can immediately call the bus to check everything is normal. The punishment for breaking these traffic rules for drivers and bus company are actually very severe. Back to 10-15 years ago, the long-haul buses were popular (these days it's extremely rare ppl take it), there was lots of bus accidents and lots of ppl were injured and lost their lives, so that's why the traffice laws regulate long-haul buses are very strict and the drivers have to stop the bus to take a break. Honestly I didn't take long-haul buses for almost 12 years, and I don't recommend you guys to take it, it's better take a train/highspeed train or plane. The experice of taking a sleeper bus or train usually ended up with noisy snoring passengers, haha, that's why I don't like it.

During my youth as a junior engineer who travelled a lot under tight budget I could sleep under the couch of a train. But I never could make it through overnight bus. The smell and the snoring were just simply horrific. Because of it's notorious safety record it has been banned in many province s. It's a thing of the past. You guys should always take train or daytime bus.

Since 2012, Chinese sleeper bus related enterprises and production enterprises have stopped producing sleeper bus products in accordance with relevant regulations. Sleeper buses have basically withdrawn from the stage of transportation in China. There are actually not many sleeper buses in China, accounting for only 1% of all buses, but the death toll accounts for 10% of all buses. The mortality rate is high because most passengers are lying down during accidents. The hidden crisis is too high, which is also the reason why the country has formulated this policy. The sleeper bus is a microcosm of China's transportation in the past 10 years, and the ticketing method you see is also the same as it was in the past 10 years. Perhaps in two or three years, China will no longer have sleeper buses.

Ear plugs are very effective and don’t take up much room, I’m surprised you don’t use them in that sort of situation. 👍🏻

So brave of you. I took a similar bus in 2011 for 19 hours, and never want to take it again. Bad air condition, smoking on the bus and overload people sleeping on the narrow corridor. If I want to get off the bus for rest, I need to take care of not step on them.

I took a bus when I couldn't get a train ticket and it was the WORST! A 9 hour trip turned into over 24 hours because it was during the holiday. At that point I didn't know about the 2-5am stopping rule and it was not fun. It's cool seeing the sleeper bus though!

2:43 Don't buy the power bank promoted by the station staff, it may be fake. It only contains a few batteries and is not a real lithium-ion power bank. If you want to buy it, you can ask your Chinese friends to help you purchase it on JD and deliver it to your hotel. JD in China is very fast, usually ordering today and arriving tomorrow. Orders placed in first tier cities before 11am will arrive in the afternoon of the same day.

It's been over 20 years since I took the sleeper coach to Shenzhen when I was a kid. This type of bus has been banned in Guangdong area as early as more than a decade ago because of safety concerns.I can't believe it still exists.

If you're sensitive to noise, wear noise-cancelling ear buds, or just get ear plugs when you're on these kinds of overnight transportation trips. Saves your energy having to complain through half the video. And you'd probably get more sleep too. Good travel tip there.
