*Counseling and Counselling are two spelling variants of the same word. Where counseling is used in American English, counselling is used in British English.
“Counseling Psychology is a specialty within professional psychology that maintains a focus on facilitating personal and interpersonal functioning across the life span. The practice of Counseling Psychology encompasses a broad range of culturally-sensitive practices that help people improve their well-being, alleviate distress and maladjustment, resolve crises, and increase their ability to function better in their lives. With its attention to both to normal developmental issues and problems associated with physical, emotional, and mental disorders, the specialization holds a unique perspective in the broader practice-based areas of psychology.”
In 1946, Division 17 of the APA, titled the Division of Counseling and Guidance, was created. It wasn’t until 1951 that the field of counseling psychology emerged as a separate specialty. It was during this year that the job title of counseling psychologist came into use.
Roles and Responsibilities of Counseling Psychologists include:
1. Fostering the psychological development of the individual on all levels of the adjustment continuum
2. Spending the bulk of their time with individuals within the normal range of functioning
3. Must be trained to work with individuals at any level of psychological adjustment
4. Focusing on the positive and preventative
5. Stimulating personal development to maximize personal and social effectiveness
