Superior performance by Jim Carrey there, some of his funniest characters ever made. You actually left out the scene with him laughing inside the shop while the kids were stuck in the car on the railroad tracks, insanely funny laugh....
@@dianamagritte5079 and that the film crew didn’t like his improv. Believing the movie was becoming more about him than the kids. Which to be fair, his performance did take away some of the screen time from the children. But honestly Count Olaf was a main character, and an obstacle the kid had to overcome. So I think it was an appropriate amount of time.
Fan fact: In the italian language "Puttanesca", which is an actual dish, means something like "Whorish". It's not quite the same thing, cause "puttanesca" is just the name of the dish, and it's not used in other situations, but you get the point. So, what is funny is that in the italian dub, when Violet says "Puttanesca" and Olaf responds "what did you called me!?" It makes more sense
I know, hahaha! I speak Spanish (though not Italian) and we have a similar word for "wh**e" as well. Puttanesca got its name because it's an inexpensive dish to make and its ingredients were uncomplicated and relatively easy to access (keeping in mind that things like basil, anchovies, and tomatoes are naturally abundant in Italy); therefore poor people often made it in Italy, and some of them were prostitutes who didn't make a lot of money. It's similar to gumbo and jambalaya from New Orleans, or Ratatouille in Southern France: they're rustic "peasant" dishes that are also highly enjoyable. I didn't know what's in pasta puttanesca until I read the book's more detailed description of it and the Baudelaires making it, and then Googled a recipe for it. I'm seriously contemplating making it for dinner soon, because it sounds delicious. Side note, in the show, Monty asks "Stephano" what he knows about herpetology, which is the study of reptiles and amphibians. "Stephano" responds that he doesn't know anything about mouth sores, which implies that he thought Monty asked him if he knows anything about herpes, which is an STD. The show has a surprising amount of mature jokes that would've flown over my head as a kid!
I'm so happy someone else appreciates Jim Carrey's performance in A Series Of Unfortunate Events!!! This has been my favourite movie since I was a kid and I still find myself quoting Count Olaf's lines on a daily basis (specifically "hello hello hello. I am your beloved... Count... OLAF...". Also "roast beef") Such a good video!!!
Both NPH and JC nailed the role imo, but had their own specialties. NPH was perfect in the scheming villainy, however Carrey perfectly illustrated Olaf's mountainous ego.
I’m pretty sure Carrey would’ve done the same scheming villainy if he was given a role in a series as opposed to a movie. Much less time to show all aspects of the character

Although he is still scary and I love his campiness, Jim Carrey’s Olaf didn’t strike fear into me. When I read the books I was always so impressed by how brave the Baudelaires were. Despite their fear and traumas they also fought to survive and protect each other.
I thought Carey's Olaf was creepy and threatening when that was what he was going for. When he threatens the children before Poe takes them away, the hall pass scene and just before he throws Josphine to the leeches.
@@adamantiiispencespence4012 Interesting! More than Neil? Jim Carrey’s Olaf is so silly it actually felt as though if the Baudelaires were wicked he would enjoy them. As if he didn’t like them because of how boring they were. Neil’s character seemed purely hateful. I found this closer to the books.
Although I prefer Neil Patrick Harris's version because it's closer to the books, I still enjoy Jim Carrey's version because of how campy he is. Edit: I’m gonna say it. Both Jim and Neil did a respectable job portraying this villainous character and they gave their all.
The way Stephano comes to the door in the reptile room has to be one of the best moments in film history! And only Jim could convey the character of the moment so indelibly.
I read the books , arguably one of the most original and interesting stories I've ever read. Yes the movie was great but lets be honest , reading the book captivated my soul and made me feel empathy for the orphans at a much deeper level. Plus reading is all about perspective, no two people view a book the same. It was brilliant, reminded me when I was a kid reading these books
I know this film got a mixed reception, but Carrey was perfectly cast as Olaf. I loved the dark humor as well. I still have nostalgia for the film overall, as I saw it in the theatre when it first came out when I was 9.
I still prefer the movie to the show Yeah the show is more accurate to the books, but this works as a standalone movie, like even if it was never based off the books. This version to me is just so much better than the books or show (I say this with respect to both of them, and as someone who read them and watched the show). It has more campy moments sure, but to me it feels a little more darker. Not only that, but the cinematography is way superior and the soundtrack..............my god...........Thomas Newman is literally my favorite composer. I loved his work in Road to Perdition, 1917, Shawshank Redemption, Revolutionary Road, etc. This movie is close to my heart
I 100% agree. The movie really encapsultes the dark despair of the books and emphasises on the genuinely hilarious black comedy. Not to mention Jim Carrey's Olaf is way more menacing and genuinely threatening and scary. The series always felt like it was making fun of their situation and NPH felt bland to me.
@@sims2lovealot I have to disagree personally. I LOVED the movie as a kid, and I think they both capture the essence of the books in a bottle. The show is just hilarious to me, and I find NPH super good as Olaf (if not better because he captures that creepy factor super well.) Jim got it right too, but there were some aspects to it that just didn't land as well imo. I prefer the films variation of The Wide Window, but shows version of the Bad Beginning was much better in my opinion since it bounced back and forth between dark comedy and misery much better. Both did The Reptile Room very, very well, and both takes on Stefano were pretty great. I think they are both excellent but prefer the show. Though I still love the film. Jim's Olaf is just not ever really creepy outside the hallpass scene. Meanwhile NPH's version balances both aspects of the character very, very well. To quote from the books... "The really frightening thing about Olaf, was that he was very smart after all. He wasn’t merely an unsavory drunken brute, but an unsavory, clever drunken brute." Jim never fully gave me that vibe. He was just too silly. It also failed to really capture the sheer pedantic, and apathetic adults the same way.
I don't even read a book as a kid I watching these movies cuz I had crush on violet doesn't even know who is Jim Carrey but now I like Jim Carrey count Olaf compare to the tv series cuz I nvr read a book I juz refer it as a standalone movies
I love how when he first meets the kids and calls for a timeout and a re-read, that was legit and Carrey forgot his line but stayed in character which further facilitated that Olaf is a complete imbecile and can’t remember a script that he made himself.
Brilliant and phenomenal acting right here that needs more recognition. Jim Carrey always steals the show every time hes in something. Whether its Riddler or Count Olaf.
Jim Carrey’s Count Olaf is my favorite too. I used to picture his character when reading the Series. Years later, for laughs, I try to imagine Steven Ogg as Count Olaf with Trevor Phillips inspiration: low hygiene, evil tendencies, and an affinity for setting things on fire.
While my favorite Olaf is still Tim Curry from the audiobooks, Jim is definitely my second place. This movie introduced me to the book series that I still enjoy today
Both versions of the a series of unfortunate events I believe both work in their own way Jim cerry being more cartoony and scary while Neil Patrick Harrison’s version is more expressive and eccentric, but I never read the books so I don’t have too valid of an opinion on this
You've probably heard this from multiple people already, but here I go: The series is much more faithful to the books, even if they do take a few creative liberties to make the story flow better and in some cases to add more emotional impact (friendships existing in the series where there weren't any in the books, the appearances / mannerisms and even the fates of some characters change for storywriting, etc.) but it all works out for the better. The casting is more diverse in the show and has brighter color palettes than the movie (also, *all* the characters have more than one outfit, not just Olaf in the show) but it's all used to help tell the story. And Sunny has more lines in the show, which as accurate because she's very chatty in the books. Jim Carrey was more theatrical than the books' Olaf, but that added to his massively egotistical persona, and he also looks dirtier than NPH's iteration, like I can almost smell his terrible hygiene and drinking habit through the screen. He also does a better job of acting unhinged, which I always imagined Olaf was like since his arsonistic and murderous tendencies have to stem from insanity or psychopathy. However, Neil Patrick Harris does a better job at portraying Olaf's dumb moments when he doesn't know what words really mean, or when he concocts a plot that has gaping holes in it, especially with how many times even Sunny outsmarts him. He also may not act completely crazy like Jim Carrey, but he's almost like a gentleman criminal in some ways since he disguises himself and charms certain people to get what he wants. He also has the same haughty, devil-may-care attitude as the books' Olaf; it's as if villainy is the normal way to live and he truly doesn't believe he's in the wrong, he just has to get everyone who opposes him out of his way. Lastly, NPH does a fantastic job of showing how Olaf's reasons for villainy and a life of crime stem from a childhood of trauma, brainwashing and people abusing him too. Jim Carrey never got to have vulnerable moments as Olaf because that doesn't happen until after the third book (the movie only covers the first 3 books out of 13.) but I really would've liked to see how he played it out. I think both video versions of ASOUE are special in their own ways, and I've read each book at least 8 times. I've watched the movie multiple times as well since it came out when I was a kid, and I'm on my second viewing of the show. I love them both so much!!!

because both count olaf and captain sham are both great characters, and 2 good characters are greater than just one, right? Even tho you are right about they being different persons, like who thinks they are the same? Strange that they also put Stefano, like... why?
@@arthurdias6860 I know right? They're clearly not Count Olaf! Stefano has no unibrow and his ankle was clear, and Sham lived at the lake and had a pegleg! There's absolutely NO INDICATION that They're even REMOTELY related to Count Olaf. I almost feel bad they got roped into this.

I find I prefer Carrey in his performance as Olaf, both in appearance and body language, but Neil Patrick Harris absolutely SLAYS as Olaf in the disguises. Perfectly obvious that it's Count Olaf, but desperately clinging to the bit where he's believable as someone who knows it sucks but needs to commit to avoid prison.
Jim's Count Olaf works because of his energy and unpredictability. It makes for a weird character who definitely has the potential to be dangerous and evil.
I think this was Jim’s best performance, I love when he act exaggerated which was perfect for this role of failed actor. I can’t stop laughing watching this👍
The funny thing is, "dinner" actually does come from the French word for the evening meal: "disner", from the Gallo-Romance desjunare meaning "to break the fast", "des" coming from the Latin "dis" meaning the opposite of an action. I always thought that was him being pretentious but he's actually more cultured than you realise!
My English teacher was obsessed with jim carreys Truman show film. He had no idea I knew him.... you know before he lost his shit. Actually he lost his shit the day we met....
Awww, you missed the part where Mr. Poe is about to knock on Olaf's door knocker and Olaf pulls out the middle part of it (which is a peephole) and then SLAMS it back in, into Mr. Poe's face! Then you can hear Olaf run to the top of the stairs before he shouts "Intruuuude!!" so he can pose dramatically at the top and be all theatrical as he goes back down the stairs during his soliloquy. Also the part where he acts like a velociraptor! Or when he thinks "milking" a snake means finding its udders, not taking a venom sample from its fangs into a vial through a film fastened over it.
