I could be missing something, but I don’t understand how they were always able to tell it was Count Olaf. I mean for some of his disguises at least, he actually did a half decent job and anyone else would’ve never known it was him.

Hell no. Jim Carrey’s role as Count Olaf is pointlessly wacky & over-the-top; Harris at least stayed faithful to the books AND had kept his character sinister while also adding in some light comedy. Jim Carrey just does NOT play a good villain, tbh; his character in the movie’s supposed to be Count Olaf, not Count Show-Off.
