BACKGROUND
Countdown is the channel’s longest running show and the first show ever broadcast on Channel 4 when it launched 40 years ago, in November 1982. The original version of Channel 4's Countdown is the French television programme « Des chiffres et des lettres » (literally "numbers and letters"), where the Numbers Round is referred to as « Le compte est bon » ("the total is right"). The show debuted in 1965 as « Le mot le plus long » using letters only, and reached its present format in 1972. This year marks the shows 51st anniversary.

SPIN-OFF
"8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown" is hosted by Jimmy Carr, with Rachel Riley and Susie Dent assuming their Countdown roles. The formation of the crossover with "8 Out if 10 Cats" began as a series of specials, the first of which was broadcast on 2 January 2012, when Channel 4 orchestrated a special "mash-up night", merging two shows to form a special edition of the pair, as part of its 30th-anniversary celebrations eleven years ago.

For the final one, I noticed that 249 was divisible by 3, and a few seconds of mental arithmetic yields 83 as the quotient. After that, it's just a matter of making 83 without using the 3, and that can be done by 9 * 8 = 72. 72 + 7 + 4 = 83. 83 * 3 = 249.

Me too. That was funny 😂 Can you imagine the uproar there’d be if what we thought he’d said had actually been the anagram.

Yay! He's back! In the first numbers round, I saw the Jack's solution, but also factored (11 x 7 x 3 x 2^2 = 924) for these solutions: 25 + 8 = 33 3 + 1 = 4 33 x 7 x 4 = 924 25 - 8 = 17 17 x 8 = 136 136 - 3 - 1 = 132 132 x 7 = 924 In the second numbers round, I saw Rachel's solution but I think it's the only one. In the third numbers round, I saw Paul's solution and also had: 9 - 5 = 4 4 x 2 = 8 100 - 8 = 92 92 x 7 = 644 644 - 3 = 641 Which is very much along the same lines, but I also had this more individual solution: 100 + 5 = 105 105 x 3 = 315 315 + 9 = 324 324 x 2 = 648 648 - 7 = 641 In the final numbers round, I saw Rachel's solution but again factored (83 x 3 = 249) for the target: 9 x 8 = 72 72 + 7 + 4 = 83 83 x 3 -= 249 9 x 7 = 63 5 x 4 = 20 63 + 20 = 83 83 x 3 = 249 9 + 4 = 13 13 x 7 = 91 91 - 8 = 83 83 x 3 = 249

The second numbers round does have another solution, which I got so quickly and is so simple that I thought I must have made a mistake somewhere - especially when the contestants didn't get it: 8 x 5 = 40 40 x the other 8 = 320 320 + 7 + 3 + 4 = 334
@Nullifidian
@Nullifidian 11 месяцев назад
@@davmeg That is the same as Rachel's solution and mine. All you've done is do the multiplication in a different order, but it's still the same thing by the commutative property of addition and multiplication. If all you're doing is addition or multiplication, then whichever order you add or multiply digits in doesn't matter.
@davmeg
@davmeg 11 месяцев назад
@@Nullifidian I realise this but, to me, doing it in my order is the easier, more obvious way, because I'll always look to use 5s and 10s for multiplying before multiplying by the other numbers. My point is you would think 8x5 is a pretty easy place to start that gets you in a good place to get the answer, whereas 8x8 getting 64 seems a lot further away (even if the next step renders them the same). Does that make sense?
