BACKGROUND
Countdown is the channel’s longest running show and the first show ever broadcast on Channel 4 when it launched 40 years ago, in November 1982. The original version of Channel 4's Countdown is the French television programme « Des chiffres et des lettres » (literally "numbers and letters"), where the Numbers Round is referred to as « Le compte est bon » ("the total is right"). The show debuted in 1965 as « Le mot le plus long » using letters only, and reached its present format in 1972. This year marks the shows 51st anniversary.

SPIN-OFF
"8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown" is hosted by Jimmy Carr, with Rachel Riley and Susie Dent assuming their Countdown roles. The formation of the crossover with "8 Out if 10 Cats" began as a series of specials, the first of which was broadcast on 2 January 2012, when Channel 4 orchestrated a special "mash-up night", merging two shows to form a special edition of the pair, as part of its 30th-anniversary celebrations eleven years ago.

First, 8 / (9 - 7) = 4 Then, [75 × (7 + 4)] - 9 = (75 × 11) - 9 = 816.

I'm surprised only one of them got 211 as I got it quickly and I'm rubbish at these.

211: 75 + 25 + 4 = 104 104 * 2 = 208 208 + 3 = 211 75 * 3 = 225 225 - 10 - 4 = 211 75 - 4 = 71 71 * 3 = 213 213 - 2 = 211

Oddly, none of these were my first solution! Mine was (25+75)x2+10+(4-3)=211

Forget multiplying 75*3, just add 25 and 75 together and multiply with the 2 that’s on the board! Then it’s 3 from 4 is 1 add the final number 10 and you’ve solved it using literally elementary school math that could be done on your fingers. Not knocking your first thought but it’s funny how people overcomplicate it.

Round 1 Nada. I saw 102 x 8 so I was along the right lines, but miles away from an actual solution. Round 2 (8 x 7 + 75 - 2) x 6 Round 3 7 x 9 x 10 - (3 x 3) Round 4 (25 - 4) x 10 + (3 - 2)

Pretty easy to see it's divisible by 8, which gives 8 * 102, and then easy to see that's the same as 16 * 51. It's also easy to see that the other one is divisible 9, and helpfully we have an 8 and a 1 to get that 9, so then it's just a matter of doing 774/9 to see what other number you need.

In the first numbers round, I saw Rachel's solution, but I thought she'd go with this as the somewhat easier to spot solution: 9 - 7 = 2 8 / 2 = 4 7 + 4 = 11 75 x 11 = 825 825 - 9 = 816 In the second numbers round, I saw Rachel's solution, but another factor of it (obviously since it's an even number divisible by 9) is 6: 8 x 7 = 56 56 - 2 = 54 75 + 54 = 129 129 x 6 = 774 75 + 1 = 76 76 - 8 = 68 (or you can just subtract the 7 from 75 and later make another 7 by 8 - 1) 68 x 2 = 136 136 - 7 = 129 129 x 6 = 774 And you can also do this: 2 + 1 = 3 7 x 3 = 21 75 + 21 = 96 96 x 8 = 768 768 + 6 = 774 In the third numbers round, I saw the contestants' solution, but I also had a different use for those two 3's: 10 x 7 = 70 3 / 3 = 1 70 - 1 = 69 69 x 9 = 621 And you can break it down even further into its constituent factors: 7 x 3 = 21 10 / 5 = 2 21 + 2 = 23 23 x 9 x 3 = 621 7 - 5 = 2 10 x 2 = 20 20 + 3 = 23 23 x 9 x 3 = 621 In the final numbers round, I saw Paul's solution, but some other equally easy ones were: 75 + 25 = 100 100 x 2 = 200 200 + 10 + 4 = 214 214 - 3 = 211 Or the equivalent: 75 - 25 = 50 50 x 4 = 200 200 + 10 + 3 = 213 213 - 2 = 211 But the first one I came up with was: 75 x 3 = 225 225 - 10 - 4 = 211 And if you wanted to be fancy and use all the numbers: 25 + 3 = 28 28 x 10 = 280 280 - 75 = 205 205 + 4 + 2 = 211 Congrats to Paul on becoming an octochamp!
