BACKGROUND
Countdown is the channel’s longest running show and the first show ever broadcast on Channel 4 when it launched 40 years ago, in November 1982. The original version of Channel 4's Countdown is the French television programme « Des chiffres et des lettres » (literally "numbers and letters"), where the Numbers Round is referred to as « Le compte est bon » ("the total is right"). The show debuted in 1965 as « Le mot le plus long » using letters only, and reached its present format in 1972. This year marks the shows 51st anniversary.

SPIN-OFF
"8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown" is hosted by Jimmy Carr, with Rachel Riley and Susie Dent assuming their Countdown roles. The formation of the crossover with "8 Out if 10 Cats" began as a series of specials, the first of which was broadcast on 2 January 2012, when Channel 4 orchestrated a special "mash-up night", merging two shows to form a special edition of the pair, as part of its 30th-anniversary celebrations eleven years ago.

The man, the myth, the legend. He’s spoken about it in a few CTC vids. Good to see him finally make an appearance

Rachel was probably screaming inside with the first one ... "100/4 is 25! 25x25, you nitwits!!!"

I didn't see it, which is weird, because I often do see solutions incorporating square numbers. I think like me, most people start with addition or subtraction, so they like me were focused on the 6.
@boneistt
@boneistt 8 месяцев назад
@@litigioussociety4249 I recognised that 625 was 25^2, but even if I hadn’t, I’d have looked for 625 = (6*4 +1) *25 as a first attempt

Me not paying attention to player because I was working out the numbers, and getting a whiplash, when I heard Mark speak, from lifting my head so fast. CTC fans will be delighted to see him in action

Mark is one of the guys who runs the Cracking the Cryptic RU-vid channel, where they solve sudoku and cryptic crosswords... exactly the sort of person you don't want to come up against in games involving letters and numbers!

He's very good, but he has also been on before back in Season 62 when he lost to a 15 year-old. Mind you, that 15 year-old was incredibly good.

Personally, I can’t wait for the tournament to start next week… aside from the 25 squared, the last one was right there on the board as 3 x 8 x 10 for 240 and then just add 1 + 7… I’m half considering cutting the 30 second timer again. Can’t believe they both got there via 75.

That's how I got the last one... I generally don't like the numbers rounds, I rarely see a solution in the thirty seconds given.

It is so weird when they get the easy ones wrong. I would have bet money on both getting the 819 within ten seconds, and then neither gets it.

Didn't get the second one. ... The first one was pretty easy. ... 100÷4 = 25 || 25×25 = 25² = 625 I liked my 819 better: (100-25)×(5+4+2) = 75×11 (75×11)-6 = 819 And the last one had so many: (75÷3)+7-1 = 31 || 31×8 = 248

In the first numbers round, there were tons of ways to it. I saw the contestants' way, but my first solution was: 100 x 25 = 2500 2500 / 4 = 625 ' And if you want to use all the numbers: 10 x 8 = 80 100 - 80 = 20 20 + 4 + 1 = 25 25 x 25 = 625 Or: 100 x 25 x 10 = 25000 4 + 1 = 5 8 x 5 = 40 25000 / 40 = 625 In the second numbers round, I saw both contestants' solution, but I also had these ones from factoring (19 x 2^5 = 608) 25 + 7 = 32 8 - 5 = 3 3 x 3 = 9 10 + 9 = 19 32 x 19 = 608 25 + 10 + 3 = 38 7 - 5 = 2 38 x 8 x 2 = 608 10 + 7 = 17 17 x 3 = 51 51 + 25 = 76 76 x 8 = 608 In the third numbers round, I saw Rachel's solution too, but my immediate solution was: 100 - 25 = 75 5 + 4 + 2 = 11 75 x 11 = 825 825 - 6 = 819 And I also had: 100 x 2 = 200 200 + 6 = 206 206 x 4 = 824 824 - 5 = 819 And this from factoring (13 x 7 x 3^2 = 819) 100 / 2 = 50 50 - 6 - 5 = 39 25 - 4 = 21 39 x 21 = 819 In the final numbers round, I saw both contestants' solutions but also solved it as a "five-small": 10 x 3 = 30 30 + 1 = 31 31 x 8 = 248 10 x 7 = 70 70 - 8 = 62 3 + 1 = 4 62 x 4 = 248 10 x 8 x 3 = 240 240 + 7 + 1 = 248
