Countdown to War GERMANY: How the Nazis Prepared for WWII

Covert rearmament efforts had been well on their way from the early 1920s, but even still, the conditions of the Treaty of Versailles kept the nation far short of the kind of power it would need for outward expansion. For any of the Nazi Party’s promises to come true, German society itself would have to reorganize toward a single goal: War, and victory, at any cost. As we will explore today…well, that’s precisely what they did.

Bertrand Russell commented pretty openly that he felt the absurd terms and punishment brought on the German people directly caused Hitler and the second war, and believe that they shouldn’t have been as harshly punished . What's always bothered me about this since I read more into the background of WW1 and its epilogue is that, while Europe certainly wasn't asking for Nazis, it was definitely asking for the conflict. Germany was made to officially claim responsibility for WWI even though it was just one of many allies dragged into it by the conflict between Serbia and Austria-Hungary. It was essentially humiliated following the loss of said war, regardless of cause. By beating Germany while it was down, the allied countries all but guaranteed that a reactionary defensive group would take power. So while of course the race-based calamities were entirely from ideological nonsense, the war itself I can't fully blame on the Nazis. That same cycle has played out countless times around the world.
@cdressel53191
@cdressel53191 Год назад
This is where you need to read in to the stab in the back origin. The Kaiser wasn't in power to negotiate the end of WW1, he abdicated before the Treaty was signed. The German generals were presented the Treaty in English and French, not German. And the representatives negotiating on the German's behalf were Jewish, which the vast majority of their communists were. And the Treaty of Versailles wasn't what ended the fighting, there was an armistice signed about a year earlier, where the German army basically had to surrender their capability to fight. So they signed the harsh terms of the Treaty of Versailles basically at gun point, still under naval blockade, and no way to fight back. There's a lot about this period that people never talk about.

I never understood how Germany could have accepted such terms of surrender. There were no foreign troops on its soil. In fact, they still had trenches and troops in Belgium and France. well they were planning for a thousand year reich, Germany would have been an absolute powerhouse if it had actually gained its goals, the world we know now would be completely different, Germany would have full control over Europe so the cold war would have been with Nazi Europe as Russia would have mostly collapsed, it would have been up to the US alone at that point as the uk even with aid from the US would have eventually been defeated or created a peace treaty thats if Nazi Germany achieved its goals in Europe and began to progress from within.

Not gonna lie, it would have ended faster. By a french/soviet victory. Germany was not the only one that would get stronger with time. France had Charles de Gaule push for modernisation. USSR would have more time recovering from the purge and a WHOLE YEAR AT LEAST to get the T-34M going and other tanks that are not just shitshows. Meanwhile, germany would not have gotten the tiger and panther simply because those two started as responses to the Char 2B, Char 1C, T-34, KV-1 etc. so yeah, while he was bidding his time, stronger nation would have gained more. He won due to surprise and "new" but if he would've went in later, the "new" would be in everyone's hand and do you think they could've taken out all of europe for quite a few years if they were fighting on closer terms?

@@warbrain1053ah yes the T34 a notoriously shitty tank that everyone thinks is good for some reason the tank who's armor would crumble apart and literally fucking shatter the first time it was hit by a tank round the tank that was so unbelievably unsafe for its crew, that there was next to no chance for a crew to survive a direct hit a tank that was so notoriously shitty that most of them were lost to mechanical problems well before they ever made it to the front the tank that many Arab nations called " a piece of trash "

Would be interesting to see you guys do a video on the Nazi invasion of Norway (speaking as a Norwegian). The operation, after all, saw some of the Nazi regimes biggest losses in the early stages of WW2 (such as the sinking of the heavy cruiser Blücer in the Oslofjord, and the defeat at the hands of the combined Norwegian/English/French/Polish force at the Battle of Narvik). After all, not counting the Soviet Union, the Norwegian resisted the longest against a Nazi invasion before the capitulation. Whether or not you do such a video, your content is always enjoyable to watch!

It is tempting when looking at history to point to one even that kicked everything off, but it is rarely so simple. Would we have gotten a WW2 without Versilles? Would we have gotten a Versilles without WW1? Would we have gotten WW1 without, well, many things including assassination, empire, the formation of Germany as a country, industrialised timekeeping, and more?

Germany didn't start it, they were just the only ones left to pay for it. The war kicked off with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife in Sarajevo, Serbia. The Serbian nationalists wanted independence from the Austro-Hungarian Empire however they just assassinated one of the only guys in their corner nd could've made that happen. Finally getting the excuse to "clean house" in the Balkans they've wanted for years, the Austro-Hungarian Empire declared war on Serbia. Prior to Austria-Hungary declaring war and predicting the domino effect, the British government lobbied officials in Paris, Berlin, and Rome for some kind of council or convention to monitor and moderate any impending conflict. However, this idea was shot down by the German government and outside of Kaiser Wilhelm II the German military and government seemed intent on a fight. Once Austria-Hungary declared war, Serbia's ally, the Russian Empire, declared war on Austria-Hungary. Austria-Hungary's ally, the German Empire, declared war on Russia. Russia's ally, France, declared war on Germany and Germany declared war on France. All this took place within a period of 5 days. Both Italy and Great Britain stayed neutral at this time. When things kick off, Germany executes its Schlieffen Plan by invaded France through neutral Belgium. The minute the first German boots touches neutral Belgium's soil Great Britain jumps to the aid of it's ally Belgium and declares war on Germany joining France and the Russian Empire. Italy joins the fray in mid-May 1915 with coaxing from France and Great Britain with the promise of getting land back in the Alps from Austria-Hungary. The Ottoman Empire joins in late-October 1914 when two ships they had just purchased from Germany sailed into the Black Sea and attacked Russian ships. Following the attack Russia declares war on the Ottoman Empire and the Ottoman Empire calls for a jihad against Russia, France, and Great Britain. The United States enters in April 1917 with the leakage of the Zimmermann telegram with the German government guaranteeing most of the Southwest going back to Mexico if Mexico attacks the US, and with the sinking of the Lusitania which killed some 100+ Americans when the German submarine force started practicing unrestricted warfare. Once the dust settles 4 empires no longer exist, 1 empire is barely hanging on, 1 monarch and his family are assassinated, another monarch has abdicated his throne, a new government has transformed one country, and another has emerged on the world scene as a burgeoning super power.

Amazing video! I remember visiting the Caen Museum years ago, walking around the big globe spiralling down into the inevitable. Events from all nations displayed and though with the benefit hindsight I was screaming no inside. It was highly charged and complicated, the perfect storm, an absolute example of the Swiss cheese model where it was all to easy for the holes to line up. It's easy, even convenient to blame Germany and its people for solely enabling the Nazi party and Hitler. The truth is that other nations provided the means for the party to ease its way into power and in the end wiling or not. In the end, all involved were complicit.

In the documentary series "The Dark Charisma of Adolf Hitler," it mentioned Hitler's surprise at his Generals lack of enthusiasm for wanting a war when he said he wanted to occupy Austria and eliminate Czechoslovakia: "My Generals should be like Bull Terriers on chains and they should want war, war, war...but what happens now? I want to ho ahead with strom policies and the Generals try to stop me!" It was precisely because of Hitler's lust for war that led to the Chief of Staff of the German Army, Ludwig Beck, eventually resigning in 1939. He felt (as Simon mentioned here) that the German Armed Forces weren't ready in 1938 for war and as time went on he became more and more convinced of Hitler's mental state. He warned his closest aids when Hitler made his claims on the Sudatenland that if Germany went to war over Czechoslovakia, that Germany would beat Czechoslovakia but would lose the resulting war against Britain and France. He then prophetically remarked that a war against Britain and France would result in "perhaps a European, or even a new World War." When he finally resigned, he remarked, "I warned and warned, and at last I stood alone,"
