There's something about your reactions that makes us feel good. It's not an innocence really, but more a genuine appreciation you have for songs that we might take for granted. Or at least, we get to hear songs again thru your eyes. So thanks for that.

I remember when this came out...I made my friends sick with this song...it would be on repeat in my car's CD player. By the way this whole album is fantastic. Adam D. wrote this with Davy Jones from the group The Monkees in mind. Adam really struggled with depression and his music reflects alot of his emotional issues. He's another genius songwriter.

I saw this band open for The Cranberries in 1993 in Portland Oregon. For a $3 ticket at the door. It was one of the best shows I saw in the 90's. Smaller venue called LaLuna. After playing (they were great) Counting Crows were loading off the stage and The Cranberries were loading on, Adam Duritz the lead singer of Counting Crows stood and talked with my group of friends for 10 minutes at the side of the stage. It was before this album dropped, and he was telling us how excited was for the new album, and how much fun they'd had touring. 6 months later he was on the cover of RollingStone.

This song recounts a night where “Mr Jones” & Adam Duritz (the singer) were hanging out at a bar (New Amsterdam) where Mr Jones’ father was playing flamenco & that Spanish dancer Maria was performing with him. Adam & Mr Jones noticed that the drummer in Chris Isaak’s band was in another part of the room surrounded by women, & they began to fantasize about how cool it would be to break into the rock scene & be popular & surrounded by groupies…it’s basically a recounting of that night, of the dreams of hitting it big….very ironic that a song about making the big time actually became the Counting Crows big breakout hit.

The Counting Crows is one of those bands you need to listen to their studio albums to get to know the songs and lyrics first. Then, listen to them them live. Adam Durtiz, lead singer and songwriter, changes the lyrics, and sometimes the mood, as he ages and gains new experiences. This song in particular, Mr. Jones, is a song that is transformed in its live version. Give a listen to their live version of this from Across A Wire. On a final note, Mr. Jones is a nod to Bob Dylan's song Ballad Of A Thin Man, which features a character named Mr. Jones. If you haven't listened to Bob Dylan yet, I hope you do some day. Dylan is, in my opinion, the greatest lyricist. Loved your reaction.

This song was written by the lead singer about his best friend who had been his musical partner and previously in the band. He quit before the band hit it with this song. You should check out "Round Here" from the same album. It's a slower song, but the lyrics will really get you thinking.

I saw the Counting Crows perform this in Berkeley, where they had first formed as a band. The lyric, "we all wanna be big big stars, but we got different reasons for that," was changed to "we all wanna be big big stars, but we got second thoughts about that." They were big stars by this point and were obviously looking at things a little differently.

Ya know, I have to leave a comment here. I love watching these types of videos. Personally, there are few things that feel better than introducing someone to music that they have never heard before. To watch their faces as they take in the experience, and to see the moment when they "Get It". There's a connection that's made, instantaneously, from nothing, there is something. In real life, those experiences are few and far between. But in a vicarious way, I get to see videos like this, and although you literally have zero connections to me, we now show one, even if you don't know it. But why am I commenting on this video? I don't typically comment on these sorts of videos, I just consume them. But you mentioned the guy who wrote the song. There's an interesting story here. In my 20's when this song came out, (The whole album is pure gold BTW), this song carried a lot of personal meaning for me. I found the lyrics to be powerful. I didn't understand then, but at some point, I realized that many of the best songs carry very different meanings for different people. I was surprised in my 20's to discover that this song touched people in many different ways. From profoundly to not at all. And then, I saw an interview with Adam Duritz on how this song came to be. In that interview, he pretty much said the following (which I have lifted from another site that I will also link). "This was written by lead singer Adam Duritz and guitarist David Bryson (the other three band members also got composer credits). On an episode of VH1's Storytellers, Adam explained: "It's really a song about my friend Marty and I. We went out one night to watch his dad play, his dad was a Flamenco guitar player who lived in Spain (David Serva), and he was in San Francisco in the mission playing with his old Flamenco troupe. And after the gig we all went to this bar called the New Amsterdam in San Francisco on Columbus and we got completely drunk. And Marty and I sat at the bar staring at these two girls, wishing there was some way we could go talk to them, but we were too shy. We kept joking with each other that if we were big rock stars instead of such loser, low-budget musicians, this would be easy. I went home that night and I wrote a song about it." When I saw that interview, it sort of blew me away at the time, because the song was speaking to me on a completely different level. Needless to say, the song meant something to me that the Song Writer hadn't necessarily intended, or had even considered for that matter. But I came to understand that in reality, this is the mark of a truly good song. And in fact, many bands have said in the years since I first discovered this for myself, that the best songs or the songs that they are most proud of, are the ones that can be taken up by the fans be made their own. To the extent that any truth is conveyed in such songs, one may find their own truths. And those truths are no less worthy then what the writer was thinking when they first put pen to paper. And that has been my perspective on music for a long time now. This, however, doesn't make the story from the horse's mouth any less intriguing. In fact, I will leave a link here so you can go get some insight for yourself on what Adam was thinking. And although it has nothing at all to do with how I internalized the song, Adams take on it is all the more poignant. If anything, it somehow elevated this song to even higher places for me. It surely is a great song. But then, The Counting Crows have turned out dozens of truly excellent songs. Their back catalog is immense. But for me, the "August and Everything After" was one of the best albums CC ever put out in the sense that I can play every song on the album straight through. There are no filler songs. Anyhow, check out the link. You may enjoy it. www.songfacts.com/facts/counting-crows/mr-jones

With all of the truly AWESOME music we had from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s and to be honest well before then, I never really appreciated this song. Hearing it again after so long I really can appreciate it now.. To be honest I find myself to be very superficial though and I tend to go the way of "If I don't like the look of the singer then I don't like the band". Kind of an injustice to both the music and myself, so I find myself having to re-visit songs like this to get a better view of what's going on.. Love your heart man.. God Bless....
