Catalyst: Coal Dust - How the consequences of Australia's coal boom are choking the population of Newcastle, New South Wales

Australia is among the world’s largest coal producers and exporters - not something to brag about when you account for the worrying health consequences in port cities such as Newcastle. Since the mining boom in the late 1990s, respiratory diseases such as asthma have been climbing sharply, largely attributed to dust particulates given off in the extraction and transportation of coal. Mark Horstman heads to Newcastle, New South Wales, and investigates the efforts that are underway to identify harmful concentrations of coal dust particulates.

Australia, if your against coal mining then prove it turn off your electricity
@abhiishot2007

Our indian companies have recently bought coal mines in australia. This is going to increase even more. Indian govt is increasing solar plants but it is taking a lot of time due to various problems. I think for atleast next 50 years coal will be still used for electricity production. My country's fertility rate has come down but our hunger for electricity is killing us slowly because of pollution. I hope in next 50 years the world needs to find alternate ways to produce more electricity or else coal companies arent going to die anytime soon.

Solar plants are too costly and they dont produce much. India really wont ever get enough electricity since the more that get it the more that want it. The rich and business will get it first then it trickles down to normal then poor people. Until it reachs everyone the amount needed is never truely known and from there you will start getting products that help with your usage. It is a process that all of our societies had to go through.

***** I am a power engineer actually, but anyways...i dont think you know anything about math. You use your mind and "think" that it is possible with your own experiences and whatnot. Well that is basicly worthless, if that is how our society was made them we would still be fighting with rocks and living in caves.

***** I cant believe that you are going to school, you cant even type half of the words needed in this conversation. You cant do math which is essential in getting your degree, your problem solving techniques are so off beat and off mark that it is laughable. Ideas are good sure, but when you have no idea how anything works and you are ignorant. I want them to get the energy needed, but what is needed is so far away that the population is exceeding the demand. Comprende Senoir?!?!?

In Canada, the coal trains are sprayed with stuff that stops dust. This video is rubbish - the air in Delhi is 700 versus the 25 limit mentioned here. London air is 15. Was 200 in 1950.

How about when they did the air quality study and found the level of coal dust to be insignificant? Yes, they were all upset and outraged that they didn't have anything to be upset and outraged about. In fact, they were so upset about the air quality that they had to have an extra pack of cigarettes that day.

@Marco Zepeda In the Hunter the coal mining jobs pay well. There is no fixed rate of pay for coal miners depending on your skill level and which pit you work in and how much overtime you work. I was told the poorest paid coal miner in the Hunter is paid over $70,000 pa. Coal mine support pays better such as tradesmen working in the mines. There are about 1000 train drivers in the Hunter all earning in excess of $100,000 pa

@Marco Zepeda Dear Marco. The largest coal exporting port in the world is Newcastle and the river running into the harbor is called the Hunter River. I have a daughter living in the Hunter and most of the customers in her bisiness work in the coal mining industry or they are family members of miners. Hunter Valley coal is among the best quality coal in the world and is in huge demand in Asia. Japan is our biggest customer. My daughter told me the average salary for a miner is about AU$126 K to AU$125 K however this does not include overtime . My daughter told me as most mines overtime is never assured but does occur but you can't do your budget on it. There are many pits in the Hunter Valley and I am sure the rates of pay and conditions vary slightly from pit to pit. All the pits as far as I know are all unionised. There are coal mines in the Namoi Valley too in NSW. There are many mines in Queensland as well but I don't know much about them. Many mining jobs in Queensland Australia are fly in fly out as the pits quite often are in remote places and wives don't really want to live there. I saw there is a website about mining salaries but my daughter told me they are somewhat understating what a miner can earn.

I don't know, but I've been told, Australian coal is better than gold, Chinese people are gettin' cold, Australian barley gathers no mold, One million tonnes were sold, Australian wine is pretty sweet, Taiwan bought most, really neat! Australia starts growing wheat, The circle is now complete, Charge China double, so they can eat!

when everyone burned coal, here in north uk, you never seen anyone with asthma, but now since nearly every house has gas central heating, & double glazing, loads of people have breathing problems, & asthma, when a coal fire is burning, it obv,ly needs oxygen to burn, so the chimney will draw air from anywhere it can, so in the process, the chimney is taking all the bad stale air out of the home & replacing it with fresh air, but with out the chimney with central heating etc, the air dosen,t move ,it ends up stuffy & stagnant, cos your using the same air over & over again, so i know which i would rather have.. & still have an open fire, & i,ve never had any breathing problems even though i,ve smoked for over 40 years

It baffles me that Australia of all countries doesn't build more solar infrastructure. Granted, they probably don't have access to natural pumped water storage, but solar could at least contribute more to the energy mix.

Here we are now in 2020. What was the result of these tests. The amount of coal that has been mined in the Hunter Valley since 2014 there must be evidence of the damage it has caused to the environment and the health of people in the Hunter Valley.

Folks, coal kills no if ands or buts. If you don't think you've been affected think twice. There is no place on earth where you can catch fish or shellfish that has not been affected by methyl mercury, which comes entirely from burning coal to produce power. There are types of fish that have lower levels and some fish that have extremely high levels, but there are no fish that are free of mercury. I loved swordfish, there are no seafood restaurants that serve it because this fish has among the highest levels of mercury. Our air is fouled our food is being fouled and we just sit.
