Countries Mentioned in the Bible

Ever wondered which countries are actually referenced in the Bible? In this video, I'll explore just that, and create a neat new "Bible Accurate" map in the process!
These biblical lands stretch over a massive geographical area. From the rich African Kingdoms of Kush to the exotic maritime ports of ancient Ophir, the biblical writers knew of regions that lay on the periphery of the known world. When used as a historical document, the Bible is a snapshot in time into the surprising world of early trade. Finding real-world locations in the Bible reveals how connected the ancient world was.
Is your country there? If not, should your country be on there? I’d be curious to hear whether the eastern land of Sinim mentioned in Isaiah 49:12, could be a reference to China.
A few notes about the map. When the Bible was written, "countries" as we know them today didn’t even exist. Plus, there’s no one version of it that all Christians can agree on (although that would be nice). I am using the NRSV. What's more, I have taken Scythia to mean Bulgaria and Romania (as in Scythia Minor). I ought to have included Ukraine into this mix too but hey, Scythia has always been notoriously difficult to define! Also, Arabic not Aramaic.
I hope you enjoyed this video, I enjoyed making it. I have an exciting personal milestone this end - I'll be moving into full-time employment! Don't worry, I won't disappear entirely but I will, unfortunately, be uploading less frequently. I am always so grateful for this amazing platform and your amazing viewership over this exciting chapter of my story.
Thank you for 740,000 subscribers, old and new.

Yay! Lebanon was mentioned! Always fun when we get mentioned. My understanding of the history is that Lebanon at that time would have been more of a region with several independent city-states than one unified kingdom. Lebanon as a country is honestly a relatively recent thing considering that we were under Ottoman rule and later French mandate until 1943 when we gained our independence from the French. Tartessos was an iberian or celtiberian culture from south Spain that extracted gold, minerals and copper to sell it to the Phoenician colonies such as Cadiz, Malaga, Sexi, etc., aswell Greek cities. It's very mysterious because the Greek & Roman writers praised this culture because of its antiquity and wealth, although to this day it is very mysterious due to the scarcity of settlements. There are mentions of a certain king named Arganthonios and legend has it that they would be the descendants of Hercules, who after killing the giant Gerion in Spain, fathered the Tartessians.

Scythia in those times would refer to the Pontic-Caspian steppe, which lies in modern-day Ukraine and Russia, and maybe Moldova. Romania and Bulgaria would still be included since I believe that Thrace is mentioned in the Bible, which is all the land south of the Danube.

I thought about this too. Perhaps they mean "Scythia minor" circa the Roman empire which would mean Dobruja (split between Bulgaria and Romania). The true extent of Scythia however would include by a technicality Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, Russia and Kazakhstan, which would really fill up that map. I guess it depends how you understand "Scythia" in context.

The inclusion of France should not only be partial due to *Maccabees 2* being a deuterocanonical/apocryphus, but also because even now it's still debated if the Gauls mentioned are Cisalpine Gauls or Asia Minor Gauls (also known as Galatians). Both tribes were related to each other and both gave trouble to Rome until finally becoming subjects to it at about the same time (around 2 B.C.).
@LangThoughts
@LangThoughts Год назад
Actually, France may be mentioned in Obadiah (verse 20), as Zarapheth
@jorgelotr3752
@jorgelotr3752 Год назад
@@LangThoughts Leaving aside that he mentioned Maccabees as the only source, checking the book of Obadiah tells me that the word is "Zarephath", which is an alternate name of Sarepta, current Sarafand, which is located in Lebanon, actually.
@samhall5212
@samhall5212 Год назад
The text in Maccabees refers to the Celts conquered by the romans at that time : either the people from Cisalpine Gaule (conquered in 191 BCE), located in what is now northern Italy, or the people from Galatia (pacified by the romans in 189 BCE), now in present-day Turkey. So, either way, France seems to be out of the picture. Some have proposed that the "Galatia" mentionned in 2 Timothy 4:10 (written ca. 80 AD) be the then fully-romanized Gaul (that is Northern Italy plus the current France, Belgium, Luxemburg, and a part of the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland). Some also speculated that the land of Elishah (Genesis 10:4 ; 1 Chronicles 1:7), renowned for its colorful fabric (Ezechiel 27:7), could be the land of the Elisyces, a tribe from the region of Narbonne, in southern France.
@jorgelotr3752
@jorgelotr3752 Год назад
@@samhall5212 Were it the Cisalpine Gauls, France would be in the picture, given that Cisalpine Gauls' territory did span throughout over half of current France (and even just a bit of territory would qualify).
@samhall5212
@samhall5212 Год назад
@@jorgelotr3752 I think you may be mistaking the Cisalpine Gaule ("up to the Alps") for the Transalpine Gaule ("beyond the Alps"), which spans all over southern France. Anyway, at the time the action of the Book of Maccabees takes place (ca. 160 BCE), the northernmost place conquered by the Romans was Modena in Northern Italy. It is only forty years later that the Romans set foot in what is now a French territory.

The letter to the Thessalonians is addressed to the church in Thessalonica in Macedon, not Thessaly. Scythia typically references Ukraine and Russia around the Black Sea. In the book of Obadiah, the name “Tsarfat” has been used next to the name “Spharad” (which is another biblical name which is still in use describing Spain); and this connection probably caused people to start call france “Tsarpat”.
