There is a town in Mexico where people drink like 1.5 litres of Coke a day. Coke is cheaper there than water and a decent percentage of the town works in a Coke factory nearby. Most people there aren't aware of the health risks so they decide to drink it over the more expensive less flavorful water. It's also used in doctor practices. Not real ones, I forgot what they're called but like the old people who say they can cure cancer by feeding you leaf soup. I forgot the name of the town but you can probably find it if you search up "Mexican Coca Cola town" or something.

Shorts like these that use averages incorrectly are a great way to educate the masses in why the range is important to know as well as the average. Just because X country drinks Y amount of soda on average, doesn't mean every single person actually drinks that much soda. It just means that country has more being drunk by some people than others to a point where that becomes the average between them. (I really shouldn't have to explain that kind of thing either. You all should have learned this in your first years of school of any sort in almost any country.)
@RandomPersonWhoPosted38years
I’m American, and I used to drink soft drinks. I drink soda maybe here and there but only on special occasions or parties now. Really, cutting soda out of my diet was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life. Soda is empty carbs and empty calories. So once I stopped drinking it, I lost weight, and I was feeling a lot better about myself. Not saying I’m the skinniest or healthiest person ever, but it made me happy because I cut something off that was useless and unhealthy. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I'm not too surprised that Saudi Arabia was on the list. From what I heard, Islam forbids people from consuming alcohol, so soft drinks, water, and juice are pretty much the best options.

I know soda has a bad reputation these days, but when you make it yourself you can control the sugar content. And other ingredients as well. I highly recommend brewing your own soda if you can afford to! It also tastes better that way I think

I unfortunately lived in suburbia for a while and yeah they love drinking soda for every meal and in between meals, to hydrate at six flags, 99c for a 42oz at a lot of gas stations

I myself get about 15-50L of soda a year and that's a lot at least within my county (bigger than a city smaller than a state) that and If I'm not Mistaken every State besides 2? Have a Soda Tax of either 5 cents or 10 that you get back apon returning the bottles which alot of people still throw on the side of the road to be picked up for someone else cash

Some additional fun facts: in Norway diet soda is now more popular than classic sugar soda (and it was 111 liters in 2022, where 62 liters was diet soda); and although we don't have a soda tax we do have a sugar tax.

As an Aussie, what are we not doing on this list, we drink nearly 1 litre a day, and that’s only more for kids… where are we

Ok i think its about how many soda bottles you buy so here in Norway you get some cash if you return a bottle so thats maybe the reason we buy so much soda

We need a pop tax in the US. Direct application with the purchase. When asked why, explanations and a pamphlet ought to accompany each drink. That might help. There’s so much ignorance of the harm caused by drinking more than 6 oz once a week!

What i feel with soda is that if i drink it once, i tend to drink regularly for sometime, but if i don't i will not even think about it. Now I never drink it and it's feels better.

Oops. Diet soda kills gut flora which messes up several processes ( including brain function). And the carbonation pulls minerals from bones. So it's better in one way, but still should be only once in a while.

Just keep in mind that the poor you are the more likely you are to drink soda at a higher volume. You can speculate whatever reason you want, but in the end a soda tax only affects poor people more

In America the problem with sugary drinks is not up to the Federal government, it is left up to the states or cities. For example, Philadelphia has a tax on any sugary beverage, not just soda.
