The video shows the share of high speed rail (HSR) by country from 1996 to 2020. High-speed rail (HSR) is a type of rail system that runs significantly faster than traditional rail, using an integrated system of specialized rolling stock and dedicated tracks. While there is no single standard that applies worldwide, lines built to handle speeds above 250 km/h (155 mph).

75%?!? Okay, when is India going to get started building its HSR network? India should clearly have the world's second-largest network for obvious reasons.
@shivampatnaik2000
@shivampatnaik2000 Год назад
India is building its first HSR line that is scheduled to be fully built by 2028. And your assumption that India should have the world's second largest network isn't correct. For sure, India can have such a large network. But at present, such a network won't be viable commercially and will incur massive losses. The reason for that is the fact that Indians are nowhere as rich as people from the countries shown in the video and HSR costs a lot of money to build and run which the passengers need to pay for. The government is beginning to build HSR lines on routes that are expected to be commercially viable. It will take quite sometime before we have a large network.
@pineapplesareyummy6352
@pineapplesareyummy6352 Год назад
@@shivampatnaik2000 I think you're underestimating the economic returns of basic infrastructure. India should not even be considered that poor. You'll see in the video that China started building its first HSR in the mid-2000s, and the most economically important Beijing-Shanghai and Beijing-Guangzhou routes were complete, I think, in 2007. It's been 15 years. How far behind is India compared with China? The gap is probably 15-20 years if we look at GDP per capita figures and assume 7%-8% growth for India. Another data point is that India recently passed France and the UK in total GDP, something China did around 2004 if I recall. So India should now be doing what China was doing in the mid-2000s timeframe. On some things like access to the Internet, the software industry, India is doing better than China at a comparative GDP level. But on other things, infrastructure, total exports, etc., China was doing better.
@shivampatnaik2000
@shivampatnaik2000 Год назад
@@pineapplesareyummy6352 I believe the government recognises the fact that many routes have either become viable or will become viable in a few years and is thus building the first lines. We will hopefully have our first lines around 20 years after China had its first ones. Not unreasonable, I think. For India to have a large network, we probably have to wait for another 20 to 30 years.
@Allan-zu4is
@Allan-zu4is Год назад
@@pineapplesareyummy6352 Here is a simple comparison of China and India's GDP (in billions) in the past 20 years. Let's PRAY to China NEVER becomes the most powerful country in the world. As for high-speed rail, in 50's, the American government bet in highways to cars - today, it's visible it was a HUGE MISTAKE, but now, as the United States is a REAL DEMOCRACY, if you want to build a high-speel rail, the price is astronomical... while Chinese government just says "get out from the way, because I want a high-speed rail where it was your house". A weak RMB is good for export, which will keep prices lower and improve people's living standards all over the world. Although a strong RMB may make China's GDP suddenly surpass that of the United States, and its per capita income will also reach the level of developed countries, but it will not improve Chinese people's lives much, because to be honest, prices are almost calculated according to the standard of RMB,instead of dollars today. The HSR in China is just like when a poor guy buys expensive clothes only to flex but at the end of the day he is broke and has no money. The HSR in China is completely broke! It is $1 trillion in debt even more than that. Of 30+ lines in China only 5 are profitable. The rest lose money every day and 11 of these lines cannot even pay for the electricity bills. People in China use regular railway because it is just as useful for short trips but much much less expensive. The railway is just one of the bubbles that hold the Chinese GDP growth high. The other such example is the real estate sector. The empty apartments in China have the capacity to house every single American and then more. China is oversupplying the market with useless capacity creating a bubble which will soon burst. And in the case of their housing market it will burst even more

Building high-speed rail in such a country requires strong technology, huge output of building materials and high-tech materials, a huge team of engineers, advanced geological investigation and planning, advanced materials and large-scale equipment suitable for various geological and extreme climates, and also It requires the mobilization and deployment management ability of a large amount of social resources.
