Probably one of the most important vids I have found as a new guitar player. After over 60 years of listening to music, I knew in my mind what embellishments would sound great, but never knew how to play them. You just gave me the ingredients that will help spice up the boring basic chords. Thanks!

I’ve spent 50 years strumming - rather well, actually - and tonight I finally connected 3 chords with some runs…. It gives a ‘nice’ feeling. Now to go back and find all the other videos and see what else I can learn - now that the lightbulb just turned on!

Your comment at around 4:30 (that you kinda “sidetracked”) is absolutely right about some music sounding robotic as opposed to human. It’s little insights like that that are SO important, especially these days.

Tremendously helpful tutorial, and exactly what I'd been searching for. Most of these tutorials on licks/fills/embellishments are heavily biased towards blues, which doesn't interested me that much. I'd love to see more of these folk/country embellishments. Many thanks 👍

Thank you very much for this. I've been playing for several years but I'm still just an advanced beginner/intermediate. As an older player (60), I don't have the desire to learn music theory, especially as it applies to the convoluted guitar, so this type of lesson is very helpful. Would be nice to see a series of lessons that could help casual guitarists advance in all genres, without needing a degree in music.

I’ve spent a lot of time on this and I’m closer to being able to play than when I first started, so I suppose that’s progress. I just think it should be easier for me than it is, which is frustrating. It doesn’t sound nearly as good as when Brian does it, though. I’ll keep trying, maybe it’ll get better. try this: try singing along to his little runs, and at the same time tap your foot or even better do air strums, up and down to the beat. Sonfor example sing dum tee dum, or 'ta tee taa', move your hand up and down to the beat. You don't need a guitar to do this. Don't count. Then learn licks only. Sing the rhythm again and then try adding chords in time to your riff. Break this down into small chunks. First, 'sing' the first little rundown, then do the chords, and then move on to the next little rundown. Hope this helps.

I love this idea, but it would be nice to be able to play stuff like this in other keys as well. Are we using the scale or what? Just being spoon-fed what fret and string to hit isn't helping me. It's probably because of my lack of knowledge, but I'm just not seeing the "why" in this.

What’s the theory behind the licks in between chords
@indubiousComrade
@indubiousComrade 3 года назад
pay attention to where the lick start and ends, play it slowly and try to hear how the notes pull you from one chord to the next. In a lot of cases diatonic half steps are a good first place to look, but as you learn more and more licks in lots of different key centers and tonalities you will learn how to move from one chord to practically any other. Doesn't matter if you're strumming chords or outlining the chords with your lead, It's all tied together with voice leading: minimal changes between chords, usually by half-steps.
@bevinmore
@bevinmore 3 года назад
