Thanks for recommending this to me from a previous comment, exactly what I was looking for! Now I just need to get in the wood shed and put in the hours on this material! You the man!!!
Great foundational lesson - mastering these major pentatonic shapes in relation to the chord they are over is a big milestone...cool approach to learn licks and relate them to each shape. Cheers Matheus!
Great lesson. My teachers would just say learn the patterns in all positions in all scales in all styles. So I spent hours learning patterns without knowing how to use them.
Same dude. Only after 17 years of playing am i finally taking the approach of learning small things and how to apply them and my playing is improving way faster than it ever did with the "learn everything and figure out how to use it later" method. Matheus is one of the best and we're lucky to have a guy like him willing to share the stuff he's worked so hard to figure out.
I've done basic memorizing of these licks and I'm going to put them to use. Thanks! I can already tell this will help immensely to have more flavorful playing.
Very nice instructional video Mat. I would emphasize the landing notes when you change chords because most new guitar players know the "root" on the bass strings. A song may be in the key of "A" major, but during the progression goes to D major and E major, the "landing" notes are important as you play lead even though the song is in A major if you're going to play lead following the chord changes. Make more of these instructional videos and thanks doing this one. Always enjoy watching and listening to you play. Keep up the good work!
I like this lesson a lot and have spent a lot of time with these patterns. I notice you didn't have any examples for minor chords. I'm not all that familiar with country music but i would guess there are some minor chords used. I ended up applying this lesson to the chords in Hotel California in which in ran into formulating my own patterns for the minor chords. Do you have any suggestions for country tunes with minor chords? Better yet, if you made a video using this system including minor chords, that would be appreciated.
That’s a really good idea for another lesson! As far as a chicken pickin song with a lot of minor chords, I think “Kentucky Jelly” by Brad Paisley is one… thank you so much for watching my videos!
Man, I have been looking for this! Blues messed me up cause I could just find the key and noodle that key in pent minor. That didn't work with country.
Matheus I would like to ask a question which is what type or brand of pick are you using? It looks quite thick and heart shaped, also where can I get one.
This "passing tone" stuff really is never explained very well. I always hear you have to follow the chords and play with the changes, play the "right" notes or it doesn't sound good. But then there are passing tones that aren't in the scale and no one ever explains the how and why of those notes.
I’ve thought the same thing for a very long time. I just try to think of passing notes as any note that would give a power chord a feel or flavor for a quick second before introducing a note that actually resolves. Typically I’d consider the chromatic notes from the 2 to the 3, and sometimes the 4 and 5 as passing notes. I have always just assumed that the out of scale notes mostly work because they just do. It’s really all about the cool sound the guitar makes in a 1/4/5 when you walk over the minor 3rd to the major 3rd.
