Moonbyul has confirmed that the concept for this MV was based on tale from korean mythology centered around'Jeon Woochi' and the 'Nine Tale Fox' . The Nine Tale Fox (also known as gumiho) is an old korean/chinease myth about an immortal mystical being who feeds off human energy.. it usually disguises as a beautiful and seduticve woman who takes the energy from their lover/victim through what it's literally described as a very deep kiss. In Jeon Woochi's story tho, he sleeps with the Fox but ends up absorving her magic marble, which alows him to take her power and knowledge. So.. you can see in the scene where Solar is dancing w/ the red fans, there are 9 of them symbolizing her as the nine tales fox character. In the MV, both of them are wearing traditional korean wedding clothes, Solar's using the bride red robe and Moonbyul is wearing a royal blue robe (only allowed to the king), blue being traditional groom color. Also there's a wedding table, a bed and fold screen for undressing on set. Based on the tale, the easter eggs and what's been spoiled by Byul, fans are theorizing that the MV portraits the wedding night between King Moonbyul and the Fox Solar, where the King discovers her bride true identity unbeknown to the fact that the Nine Tale Fox had actually fallen in love with her. The King, then, hurt and betrayed, mirrors Jeon Woochi by taking Solar's magic and leaving her desolated and betrayed herself. So basically it's a tragedy between two lovers that fail to communicate with each other leading both to end up resented and hurt out of betrayal. Fun fact: Byul's using a five taloned dragon robe, the king's robe. Dragon is the literal translation for 'Yong' / aka Solar's real name. Another fun fuct: although Byul is dressed in traditional male attire, king/groom robe, she's also using a very traditional female ornament passed through mother to daughter.. hers being very big and pretty showing off whelthy and power. The MV is shot like a stage play/Kdrama on purpose. The album itself is titled, Act 1, Scene 1. and they have been teasing a lot of movie/play references. Their acting really shines and I am loving the whole concept. It is so them. Byul loves camera work. she owns 22 cameras both for pictures and filming ( she shares about them in her YTChannel) Solar has always been interested in musicals and she even acted In one (Mata Hari). so really the whole concept fits them so well. This is still the Pre-release. they will have another one in a week which will be the Title track. The whole single album will have 3 songs (plus the featured ver of Chico Malo). quick disclaimer : the korean lyrics dont have any gendered pronouns but the eng subs do! in korean they just keep referencing "thee" "my lover" or "bastard (that's translated to bad guy here)" (edit) "nom 놈" is an insult (or also a way for higher ranking people to address lower ranking, commoner men) historically/ originally refering only to men, but as time passed, the corresponding insult for women gained a worse connotation than nom (like, its pretty bad) so usually nom is used for everyone (ex. i call my friends who are girls "michin nom (crazy guy/crazy person)" on a regular. if i called them michin+(the insult for women), there would be a higher chance of them being very offended 😅🥲

I think that Solar's run with Mata Hari probably got them in the mood to do something like this. I love the angry couple argument when they are facing each other. I think they really enjoy feeding the Moonsun shippers. Mamamoo and other RBW groups have incorporated traditional themes many times. Moonbyul wore the male hanbok and played traditional drums in her solo section of the t/s concert. And Mamamoo used a traditional singer in one of their Immortal Songs performances. Oneus's Luna was very traditional and thier Immortal songs appearance was also. The fan choreography here is very reminiscent of that. Purple Kiss has also done a lot of thing in hanboks. Also Solar was recently a judge on a music competition show for traditional singers.
also this song was co-written/composed by solar and moonbyul (and of course, kim do hoon of rbw) and they had a huge hand in the concept- they kept saying moomoos would like it and they were right 😅
I think that's an oopsie. The credits list their boss, Kim Dohoon, as the primary co-writer/composer and imo it totally sounds like one of his songs. Park Woosang left RBW about a year ago.

🇰🇷 some references to korean culture in 'Chico Malo' : 🌸the narration at the start is part of a 'pansori (trad. korean theater act)' called 'aniri', which is kind of a free style story narration segment 🌸the trad instruments used are ga-ya-gum (the strings) and dae-gum (the flute thing) 🌸the lyrics reference old korean poems/songs : the first narration part references 'arirang', which is a famous song about a someone leaving their lover, but they wont be able to get far before their legs/feet start to ache the reason 'ten miles' keep popping up in the lyrics is also because of arirang, the person singing says their lover wont be able to get even 'ten ri (an old method of measuring length)' before their feet hurt 'stepping lightly on a path of flowers' is from another old korean poem, which is also about someone's lover leaving them. this particular one is famous for that specific line, since the actual korean words used show dichotomy "crush the petals under feet & lightly step on them" are used together! 🌸moon's hanbok is a king's hanbok as can be seen by the five toes on the dragon :) the red tassle she has around her waist is called a norigae, and is normally worn by women of status. due to its red color/and how it contrasts with her distinctly male hanbok, there were theories about how it could be solar's 😅 🌸their outfits' (and the backup dancers') colors are based on the south korean flag, a white background with red/blue in the middle and black in the four corners 🌸byul's line of "i'll treat the good ones" (direct translation is "ill treat the good ones with another rice cake") from an old saying of "give the ones you hate another rice cake", which tells you to be level headed with the people you dislike and treat them well
a lot of the words used are also old-korean, and as a korean, i love that they mixed traditional elements so well with an otherwise modern (trap) sound

I think Moonbyul says the lover is worse than the 3 thieves because they were folk heroes who helped poor people Robin Hood style while the lover took her heart without giving anything back.

Mamamoo will be having their first US tour. I hope you guys can watch them live. I watched them in Manila, and it was the best concert I've ever watched. Their live vocals are insane! If they come back here in the Philippines, I will watch them again, whatever it takes! 😅

The first thing in the music video is Pansori of Korea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The music video is about nine tailed foxes, a traditional Korean fairy tale It's a fox with nine tails. Moonbyul's clothes are Gonryongpo, which was worn by the king of the Joseon Dynasty. Usually wears red, and the crown prince wears blue. Of course, what Moonbyul is wearing now is an improved version of the king's clothes, and the actual king's clothes, Gonryongpo, are much more stylish and luxurious. He wears a hat called Ikseongwan and a king's belt called Okdae on his waist. The nine-tailed fox with nine legs is famous for transforming into a fascinating woman who is easily captivated by men. Solar played the role of a nine-tailed fox, and it seems that she only took the motif. Moon Byul seems to have played the role of a crown prince.
When I watched the video I felt overwhelmed cause there was so much happening. I didn’t like the song at that moment. I opened Spotify and listened to the song and now I’m obsessed with it. It is so good. They are magic together.
Some of the moos here probably don't know yet but Solar just revealed a few days ago in a fansign that one of the background sounds such as 1:17-1:22 in the MV was actually an adlib sung by her in a gugak (Korean traditional music) style that she learned by watching performances as a judge in Poongryu Captain (풍류대장), a traditional crossover music competition show, while we all thought it was from some kind of traditional instrument like haegeum (해금/奚琴) (similar to urhu (二胡) but a bit different in material and fingering). Mamamoo comes out with a complete surprise for me. Considering the title Chico Malo is spanish for bad boy is similar to bicho malo a much more insulting term in spanish, they say in Egotistic, I was thinking latin or something like egotistic. But a full on Kdrama with traditional dress and instruments and of course an awesome mamamoo song, I just had no idea and I have been a hardcore moomoo for 7 years and so deep in the Solar System for a bias I cant remember what the actual Sun looks like and I was completely surprised. I have to say the point you both warned for excessive pausing and then went slack jawed for like a full minute was amusing. Your mamamoo reactions are the best, I may check out your patreon just because this was such an amusing reaction. FYI, you two did not notice the very very end of the song, they are both flipping middle fingers, makes the kdrama even better, we know how that story ends lol.
Someone also mentioned Solar headlining the Mata Hari musical (with one of THE strongest casts ever, including Idol turned musical Co-star Ock Joo Hyun). If you get a chance to see any part of her performing on RU-vid, it is worth a look. As Solar (Kim Yong-sun) is STUNNING!!! as the performer and courtesan who was executed as a german spy. Solar is perfection in this role. Her best role may be as herself tho. As we know her to take no quarter for people who write hateful comments on internet sights, often going after them PERSONALLY!! A hater made this comment when Chico Malo dropped, "You're calling something like this a song?,...Ha!..." Solar Hits Back At A Hate Comment In The Sassiest Way Possible responding, " Listen to it again for just 2 more times😉" You gotta love Solar for going after haters. Chico Malo (bad guy in spanish) has roots in classical Korean stage performance from the on stage narration at the start to various set pieces with many figures standing around. Someone mentioned the Nine Tale Fox story. Characters often dress theatrically as animals. And they are usually not helpful cuddly ones. Deceiving, spiteful & hurtful is more the norm.

There's no difference between male and female pronoums in korean...that's what's up with rbw translation. Also what's translated as "bad guy" literally means something like "bastard" and it's not a gendered word.
