Seeing this vid and hearing this song I want These guys to be a fixed unit sooooo bad. Don't call them Dream, call them something else, but keep them together because they have such amazing chemistry. My heart is gonna be so shredded 12/31/19. NCT Dream 4+ever.

I know you didnt' ask me, but I am throwing in my 2 cents. There is a fine line between appropriation and appreciation. For what it's worth (probably 1/100 of a grain of sand) I had no problem with Chenle's cornrows. They were well done and it's a hairstyle. Once upon a time there was the phrase, 'immitation is the sincerest form of flattery'. If they can rap, sing R& B, why not participate in other forms of the culture if it is done with respect and not deception or thievery?

Ahhh I loveeeee this question! Thank you for asking! Here’s the thing, cultural appropriation is centered around the idea that ethnic and cultural styles that were once disrespected and looked down upon are now being praised and respected when seen on people who are not the original creators of the style. Here’s the thing though- I do believe that there is a lot of cultural appropriation in kpop. BUT I do not believe it is the fault of the idol or artist. I never lived in or visited Korea-so I don’t know what their conversations of race are like -if there are any at all. But I will say that COMPANIES understand that a big part of the kpop phenomenon is its ability to reach so many different countries and so many different cultures. So, it is THEIR responsibility to make sure that the stylists they pay for (fashion and hair) are aware that certain styles are really representative of certain communities. They have to be aware that certain styles in music videos or ads can result in that cultural/ethnic group feeling exploited and disrespected. So I understand why someone would scream cultural appropriation-BUT I don’t believe it’s the idols fault, we know they don’t style themselves SO a conversation needs to happen where companies can become more knowledgeable on this topic. Now do I think a person of another race can’t wear cornrows ? No, I don’t-I would just hope they would understand and acknowledges it’s roots. And if you feel that is “unnecessary or extra” then you shouldn’t be wearing cornrows. It’s okay to be inspired by other cultures but I believe in giving credit where credit is due or it is an unfair cultural exchange. Does that make sense? But again-I really don’t fault idols for this unless they say something like “it’s my hair, I can do whatever I want with it”. No you can’t, not if it’s exploiting another persons history, customs, or culture. I think people forget the history connected to braids -because it was not just a hairstyle. They term “cornrows” was coined by African Americans who resembled the braiding to actual rows of corn that had to farm. But that’s not even it’s original name, braids we’re worn in Africa to signify status and different tribes. In before slaves were take off ships, what was the first thing they did? Shaved their heads, erased their cultures and customs before horrifically taking them. And the reason why people don’t understand is because they’re simply unaware of its historic roots OR they try to disconnect it from those roots-and THAT is wrong. But the real tea is...most people who are screaming cultural appropriation are not saying it because of the historical background connected to the hairstyle. It’s more of a “this hairstyle belongs to me and my people so you cannot use it/wear it”. And honestly, I believe in honest cultural exchange-I believe in knowledgeable cultural exchange. I hope that makes sense. So long story short-companies need to educate themselves better. So they can in turn educate their stylists AND their artists. Period. I hope I answered your question! I do agree that imitation is the greatest form of flattery but it doesn’t mean much if your history is being ignored. And yes this is more important to some more than others. But what’s wrong with being informed and knowledgeable about another culture too? 🤗 -Christina
