I used to have a friend who would pretend she didn’t know me if I hadn’t called within a week. I wasn’t a big phone person and so I’d have to force myself to call her, just to be met with, “who’s this?? … I don’t know a Lolly!” every time. It was so tedious. I hadn’t called for a few days at one point and knew she’d just do her shtick with me, so I decided I didn’t need to put myself through it again. It’s been about 25 years now and I still haven’t called…

I like this question. We call this, "Protecting your YES". I realised I was bad at this and it really got in the way of relationships, so when I saw my son going through the same problem, I think I listened to a psychology podcast (probably "You are not so smart") and came across this phrase. We are both good at certain things and when people learn about it, we get volunteered or constantly asked to help with said things. It was happening in the last few years of his secondary schooling. The section head, or rector was asking him to teach classes in things his vocational teachers hadn't kept up with, technology-wise. He's high functioning ASD, ADHD, and I saw the toll that the social demands were making on him. We had a big talk about "Protecting his YES" and that this sort of thing won't stop at school. In fact, certain family members were the worst with demands and expectations. Hes gotten better at saying, "I just don't have the energy for this right now. Check back with me on xday".

@@DivyaUthup Neuro-spicy kids and adults need self-awareness skills to stay on top of things. I want him to have better tools, skills and preparation in that area than me and his father. (His father wasn't diagnosed until he was nearly 50, after we split, and ended with a total break down with him in and out of hospital on a few occasions.) I've not bothered with a diagnosis because my job, for the last 20 years, has been to just hold our lives together, but we think there is something going on there. He's really good at reaching out to local therapists and getting help when he needs that now and is able to ring direct because of his diagnosis.

You handsomes went really deep this time, and I found myself realizing that I actually didn't mind not having as much distraction from real life through your brilliant comedy - even though more often than not, laughter is the best medicine, which I regularly prescribe to myself for my sanity! But in all seriousness *pun intended 😊* - I appreciate each of you for being vulnerable and sharing parts of yourselves and your stories - including fears and growth - some of which I really relate to (i.e. Mae, your description of guilt being a default emotion at times; also, Fortune, your insights about teaching those you set boundaries with that they will no longer be enabled by you regarding certain caregiving actions). Tig - I especially appreciate you sharing the story about choosing not to visit your friend's dad when he was dying, and you were not in a season of your life where that was even possible. I have at least a few stories similar to that, but the one that stands out the most is when my best friend from childhood was dying from long-term effects of being addicted to heroin. We did not have regular contact for decades, due to her drug addiction and other related factors. We had been in touch by text a few times before she passed away (Feb. 2023), but I was going through stage 3 breast cancer treatments, and was not capable of being there for her in the way I felt I needed to -- and it has haunted me at times. Anyway, hearing your story grants me new perspective and ideas about how to continue grieving her death. 🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼❤️🌀❤️🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼

The most selfish thing one can do is to improve the world around you. That means making those around you feel good, arranging your space in a pleasing way. Losing 4 good friends in High School made me VERY conscious of the suddenness of the end. About that time I heard 'Live each day is if it were your last.' (Gandhi?) I don't have the time to waste doing things I do not want to do, it is never a waste of my time to help out. It helps that I'm knee-jerk honest and can't keep my mouth shut.

I laugh so hard at this podcast each week! I had to go back and watch the After Midnight episode after that flirting comment was made. I do not get the vibe of sexual tension/flirting between host Taylor and Tig. Tig is highly competitive and ups her game if she feels another comedian has inserted a good line. Taylor was gleeming with child like laughter a few times as she appeared to lose control of the game show..mostly due to Tigs unpredictably. It was more of a grasshopper/master vibe to me. The handsomes were definitely full of beans chased by a Red Bull on that show! 😂😂✨✨💕💕

I'm just going to take a moment to type up my experience with a friend that's always late - and I'm going to send it out here to the worldwide web and see what comes back. So, I have a friend, like Tig's, that ALWAYS late. We've been pretty close friends for over a decade (and tbh our kids are moreso friends) and i kid you not when i say I've wasted the equivalent of days of my life just waiting for this person to show up. About 3 years ago this really started frustrating me (perimenopause much?!) But I started noticing a pattern - it almost seemed like she got off on being late. It was like, if I was waiting for her then it fed her feelings of importance - she was important enough for me to wait 30-45 minutes. It was like a little ego boost for her, while at the same time crushing my ego because apparently I wasn't important enough for her to show up on time. Pretty sick. Pretty twisted. Eventually I decided that I liked the friend enough to not completely cut ties, but I started showing up in the friendship differently. I stopped initiating get-togethers. I only hang out with her when I know she HAS to be somewhere at a specific time. For example, she drops her kids off 7:30 so we can meet at 7:35 to walk together. Or we see each other at group activities where there will be other people for me to visit with while she's rolling in late. One thing that's very funny to me is, when she does make it close to on-time, she'll kinda brag about it and do a little victory lap like, "Hey, look at me, I'm actually on time!" And I always just ignore the comments because, f that - you don't get kudos for doing the bare minimum. She gives a lot of excuses for being late all the time, but I've noticed she can be on time to the dr and to school and work, so what the f?

p.s. I loved the discussion about makeup. My "makeup kit" has almost always consisted of lip balm and a couple of other items! IMHO, all three of you do not need makeup, and not just when you are being handsome . . . but also when you are being pretty little ladies! It is refreshing to see celebrities (again, of any gender) looking so natural. You are all great role models, from the surface to the depths of your souls. I'll stop now -- I'm getting way too sappy and remembering that it is not usually wise to make comments on videos or any social media too late at night! I will most likely wake up with my default emotion of regret . . . and maybe a little shame thrown in there. 😩
