Courtney demonstrates a number of landings in a Quicksilver MXL and clearly shows the piloting techniques used to bring the airplane in. Very turbulent day, too. Enjoy!

I loved my MX Sport , and specialized in short field landings. My real joy came from off-field sites far out in the deserts west of Tucson. Quiet beyond imagination and fun finds when you get there. Very cool sights over the mountains and deserts. Have what most of us have , pretty hairy stories from the seat of my ultralight. Great job on the in flight training videos!

Don't forget to keep the control stick aft as you set down, otherwise you'll wear out the front wheel struts and they can eventually fail and break. Always keep the nose light til airspeed bleeds off and it sets down on it's own. 😁👍

This was great, I am now down to only 99 reasons why I shouldn't take up this hobby. 98 of those reasons involve some type of fear and I truly believe that flying an ultralight is one of those activities that can sense fear. So I will just live vicariously through watching you and others like yourself that are very good at what they do. BTW I did enjoy this and I in fact did learn something. Thank you.

Hi mam.. how to communicate with ground people..When I fly and how to find my airport to land my aircraft
@CourtneyTakesFlight
@CourtneyTakesFlight 2 года назад
At non-towered airport, radio is not required by the FAA. It's See and Avoid. Fly the pattern the proper way and you'll be fine. If "ground people" insist on radio, ask for the FAA regulation that requires it. (There isn't one.) Public airports cannot deny access due to non-radio usage. Private airports can.

The stick to bellcrank ratio seems long - you have to lean forward to move the stick forward, and lean back to move the stick back. A little longer on the other side of the pivot would shorten the stick movements - make it more sensitive too. Is there an adjustment?

The feet controls the rudder - a major component of turns. The movement of the stick left and right "assists" in that regard.

How do the parachute lines miss the prop arc?
@CourtneyTakesFlight
@CourtneyTakesFlight 4 года назад
Generally, you try to turn off the motor, first. However, the rocket pulls out the parachute instantly and the prop will push the strap upwards and out of the way as the parachute inflates. All this happens in a fraction of a second. The chute has to be mounted just so.

@CourtneyTakesFlight

For a single seat, over the runway threshold, 40 MPH, a foot over the runway, 35, let the speed bleed off and at 27 MPH it'll drop to the surface. If it's a MXL-2, add 8 MPH.

@@CourtneyTakesFlight agreed on those numbers. When explaining/teaching I always tell people that speed is their friend when anywhere near the ground. Climb out too. vX if you need it, but 45+ should be the minimum for safety below a few hundred feet(period). We are stupid dirty, and a engine hiccup anywhere near rotation or touchdown means you’re landing again if you want to or not.

@johnwoody9505 3 года назад
In 1982 when I had my MX at lake Elsinore, I was following a book on ultralight self training. I had got to the part where it suggested if you could restart your engine from your seat, you should do it. I had about 10 hours at this point. The deal was, get to about 2,000 feet, throttle right back and once the plane was fairly level turn off the ignition. Then after about 10 seconds turn on the ignition and restart the plane. There was always a fair amount of turbulence when flying there unless you were over the water. To start the engine you really needed two hands to start the engine, it was a 440cc two stroke twin and needed a hefty pull. I just didn't want to let go of the control handle. The early MXs had rudder and elevator control on the right hand control lever. I could not turn the engine over with just my right hand. I had no option but to dead stick it in, I hadn't prepared for this in advance and it was a bit worrying but the MX was so easy to fly and I landed OK. Happy days.

@@CourtneyTakesFlight We all used to sit in the chair starting by pulling it with two hands with very little problem. The engine was different in the early days. It was a detuned snowmobile engine, a 430cc Cuyuna engine. This engine's compression ratio was reduced for ultralight use, this made pull starting easier. I did realise some 30 years later that I may have been able to restart it one handed once I had stopped it, if I had increased airspeed by putting the nose down, this would have increased the turning moment on the propellor. Your model seems far more advanced that the MX of 1982!!! I never really used the 'air speed guessometer'. I landed in a huge area of sagebrush that was about 4 to 5 feet tall alongside the narrow track I was trying to land on, I appeared back on the track with twigs etc jammed in everywhere and minus the

excellent technique and i notice that you take all landings with engine iddle: the most errors taken from some ultralight, and "standard aircrafts" pilots, is they made long approachs with very low descent rate and engine sustained: this is potentialy dangerous and a very bad technique (no "automatic" training in case of a engine problem), engine is only needed in case of unexpected downwinds, climbing runways or ultra short landings on STOL aircrafts...A ultralight aproach must be taken engine iddle, steep aproach with half to full flaps (if awailable): so to take aproach descent rate corrections without engine you can take sideslep to increase the descent rate without significant speed gain, or increase the gliding rate with speed gain (retract partialy the flaps)...

Courtney is right. (I too come from tailwheel/sailplane flying) the yaw stability while on the ground(moving) in a tailwheel/most sailplanes is negative. It’s a ball balancing on top of a steep curving bowl, the father the ball is from dead center, the more it wants to roll off the bowl and ground-loop. I’ve used the metaphor of riding a motorcycle backwards. MX quicksilvers are sometimes like that in flight, needing to stay on the pedals while flying.

I’m a glider pilot and tail wheel pilot myself, and I don’t put very much thought on footwork for a quick. (I have an MXL, maybe 300hrs on it). I for sure agree that the footwork is paramount for tailwheel/sailplane. Really my largest complaint about quicksilvers is the strange/somewhat unpredictable yaw stability.
