Yeah and then she got busted for being pals with Prince Andrew and Jeffrey Epstein. She's far from the feminist icon you are trying to make her out to be.
As volatile as she is, she’s punk. She speaks the truth, but she’s also a narcissist I believe. Not a big surprise in music, if she was never connected to Kurt, I’m sure she’d be just another 90s respected band like Breeders or Veruca Salt.
I consider Courtney Love to be a sympathetic character. From being drugged, bullied, abandoned, and abused as a child to fighting grief, addictions, and '90s/'00s media as a woman, all while being unapologetically loud and chaotic, would kill anyone, but she kept pushing through. She absolutely deserves her criticisms and should take accountability for genuine damage she's caused, but she also deserved so much better throughout her life. I for one have so much respect for her, and hope she stays sober and healthy.
I have read about her life and its actually super tragic and sad....she is just a tramatized woman , ofc all the drugs play role in why she is the way she is aswell but she had seen some horrific stuff and then her husband kills himself while she is having a baby daughter....I ghave soo much empathy caujse my husband killed himself exactly the same way only that my husband sent me a text by a phone instead of letter.... if you go trough something like this it f*cks you up
honestly her mom’s autobiography reads like a bad parent justifying their bad decisions. there’s really never a good reason to abandon a kid when they’re 12 and emancipate them when they’re 16
We don't know what it was like for either of them living with the other. Not hard to imagine difficulty raising someone with uncommon needs. You may be right, but Courtney is historically chaotic.
@@Bleak Uncommon needs or being chaotic shouldn't be allowances for shitty parenting. Such a mindset justifies abuse against psychologically divergent and/or mentally disordered children for instance.
She is a textbook narcissist. Her words are shocking by still 'attempting' to take responsibility she still blames Courtney. She says the dysfunctional home and with different dads and kids - but then goes on saying it's her fault she made her manipulative. It's a word often used when a child has little to no control over a situation - and or may not even understand the emotional turmoil they're going through as they are too young to even have a say or manage what was going on at home at all. Children can seem like they're manipulative but the majority really need more support in areas that they're not getting. @@Myacckt
Like a childhood trauma factory. I empathize with those kids, it probably broke my parents' hearts when I told them everyone would probably have been better off if I were aborted, but it was the truth. I'd never make that appraisal of someone else but I think it's an involiable right of every child to sit in vocal judgement of their parental figures retrospectively.
I like how her mom is supposed to be a psychologist or something like that but she did crazy stuff to her daughter that caused mental problems..like leaving her at age 9 alone so she can go live in new Zealand wow....who does that
no seriously i’m like how is this lady a psychologist but she abandoned her child and still refuses to take any accountability for her poor decisions as a parent? you daughter was dancing in strip clubs as a teen and you were nowhere to be found?? girl bye.
my friend's mom is the same it drives me crazy!! she's a textbook narcissist and has done so much damage to him and now she became a "psychologist" not even having a degree
Narcissists always try and find ways to make their behavior go under the radar or cover it up. The therapist route does not surprise me. It's a long-term solution to covering up poor past decisions and poor abusive behavior inflicted it seems mostly on her children. for narcissists, it seems their children are always a huge target of their rage. This is why and from experience please thoroughly vet your psychologist or any health provider. This isn't rude of you at all and it's better to ensure your safety physically and mentally. Otherwise, therapy can turn into a traumatic event quickly, and before you know it you need more therapy XD @@obvsobvs8369
it seems shes self aware somewhat abt the damage, crazy how someone like that is a psychologist, but she probs realizes the affects now especially after becoming one
A radio station tried interviewing her and they kept bringing up Kurt when she was trying to promote her new album (at the time). Understandably, she became extremely irate and hung up on the station. The DJ's then proceeded to make fun of her for like, 10 minutes, despite them ignoring her attempts to talk about her album and trying to talk about her husband's death anniversary. It's weird, because it's like, would YOU be pleased about people bringing up a painful subject every two seconds while you're trying to talk about something else? Courtney was always a very direct, challenging and flawed person and the world hates her for that. She never tried to be perfect, even when she became famous and tbh, I think that's the most admirable thing about her. She's unapologetic and bold.
I love how you left off all of her racist/sexist behavior. It’s easier to frame people disliking her as “not being a conventional woman.” Vs actually being critical of her actions.
Good points. She's contributed loads of toxicity. Even still, Courtney is a radicalized representation of humanity's infinite selfishness. She's impressively, albeit imperfectly, transparent, exuding moderate reflections of the unsavory parts of us we pretend aren't there. I don't like all she's done, but I get that unapologetically eccentric animus in her. Made me a fan.
Something else not mentioned in this video essay is Courtney Love was diagnosed with Asperger's as a little girl, back when girls didn't get diagnosed with it and it was considered extremely rare and they had no resources whatsoever on what it was or how to assist. You can see a lot of this stuff is typical autistic women stuff, just hyped up and blown out of proportion because she was villainized for it, especially in the media. Over sharing, not always understanding your age expectations, having to resort to more extreme expression to be heard etc How her mum understood how she would be crushed being judged by the other girls at Brownies. People misunderstood autism as not knowing how to appeal to social norms when often it's more about not even thinking about that and having a different priority or knowing already you aren't like them so there's no point faking it And also positives like getting along with Nardwuar and helping him out when people don't get his schtick and having empathy for things other people wouldn't have empathy for and trying to broadcast that empathy through art I think if a lot more people understood that there wouldn't be so many fingers pointed at Courtney.
@@carrie6073 dang, what was it in the end? When did she find out and how did she get diagnosed in the first place? Btw the way I often wonder if I was misdiagnosed and my story is the same but i was born in the mid 90s so the full story means a lot.
The anti semitism fits. "Every time you buy a Nirvana record, part of that money is not going to Kurt's child, or to me, it's going to a handful of Jew loan officers," - Courtney Love
I have Autism too and I can see a lot of myself in her. Girls often get diagnosed a lot later than boys and it often leads to mental illness and traits that can look like bpd or bipolar. Before i was diagnosed when i was 14, i felt misunderstood and different and Courtney Love's experience is honestly kinda relatable. I dont have bpd but i relate to a lot of the traits and its easy to see why she would have it due to all the social difficulties that come with being an undiagnosed/late diagnosed Autistic girl.
@@bananaOysterbecause of courtneys previous history of racism. for example at a show she tried getting her crowd to chant the n word (while saying it herself) . at another show she called out a black audience member questioning if they genuinely liked rock music with the sentiment that black people only listened to rap + she also said that black people only know her bc shes been arrested
I never knew her pre-90s history. I almost can't believe it. It's so wild. Like stripping in Hong Kong? What? I guess that's why she's such an intriguing complicated person and why Hole sounds so raw & authentic. I LOVE the effort you put into this. I love thorough videos like this and I thought it was pretty fair.
Some of the more outlandish stuff I choose to not investigate further, because even though the possibility of self-mythologizing is very real, it's not like it does any harm.
Mmm I believe her. Stripping was different back then as people with punk and androgynous styles were seen as a novelty. Remember rupaul was also a gogo dancer in 80's NY... and sending strippers to remote places is actually very common practice as having a rotation of girls keep the patrons coming back and the pay is betterfor the girls at those places. I know cause I worked in a mining town in the north of Canada in 2016, in the one bar the town had they still had strippers rotating every month
Unsure of if I’ll ever understand Courtney, or if I like her/dont; but she fascinates me regardless. So here I am, yet again trying to wrap my head around one of the main female rage icons of the 90s. If there is one thing Courtney is, it’s absolutely thought provoking.
And became a Narcissist herself. I'd actually classify her as a Normal- a person who has emotional empathy for a close circle of friends and family, but treats the rest of the world with Narcissistic traits predominantly...
I mean, look at 25:46. What kind of a monster of a "father" do you have to be to lie for money like that to capitalize off the pain of your troubled daughter.
Being raised by narcissists is a majorly cited cause for developmental disturbances. Wouldn't rule out anyone in that situation suffering some psychological consequences down the line, at least.
Opiate addicts go on insane rants and hurt the people they love by saying completely untrue things, so I don't think it's fair to bring up behavior while someone was an addict. My own mother was an addict and randomly barged into my bedroom to go on long screaming rants calling me a useless whore and saying she should have aborted me, etc. etc. But when she was sober she didn't even remember any of that and was an incredible, strong, and loving person. Heroin & pills are crazy, especially mixed with alcohol. It's the closest you can get to demon possession.
@@estherdimaggio9156 that's an explanation but should not be used as an excuse tho..... edit: I mean she called out a black audience member to ridicule them for something they can't change with no apology even now.
This is true, probably the biggest criticism I have of the video - but I don't envy anyone trying to create a video with this same sympathetic light but with that inclusion, how the hell do you pull that off without seeming to handwave, justify, or diminish? Talk about threading a needle while navigating a minefield. The exclusion might have been deliberate for this reason.
Glad you brought this up! I never really knew why she was disliked beyond being cobain's partner. Guess I wouldn't really learn about it in this vídeo too
i'd say it's more of just going by your rules, unlimating that fake hollywood fairytale look. deep down inside most girls wants to rebel but are just scared to. she just able to be out loud with it, though there's nothing wrong with being loud most people are critized for being over the edge and for even having an explosive personality.
@@missauroraroseblairsaysno she isn’t she has apologized for her past ignorance and was very vocal/supportive during blm. people are allowed to learn from their ignorance
I can’t help but hold some affection for Courtney. Maybe it’s partly cause I think Live Through This is one of the best albums ever made, maybe it’s cause everyone hates her (not without good reason, to be clear), but there’s some level on which I just can’t stop myself from respecting her constant rawness in the face of fame. It’s the kind of thing that certainly doesn’t lead to a nice or good life, and I feel bad for Francis who must’ve been affected by having a mother who is such a disaster, but there’s just something just undeniably charismatic about her “fuck you” attitude.
A lot of those reasons are not good reasons. She's abrasive and extremely mentally ill, but Francis is her own level of unstable that she seems to have inherited partly from her parents and partly from being an affluent teenager. There's a lot of baggage in that family that, tbh, isn't any of our business or our place to judge.
Courtney's life is her own Opus Magnus. She embodies all of our own virtues and weaknesses and dares us to look in the mirror. Life is far more interesting with her in it.
@@latentsea I meant that in the most general way possible, in order to highlight truthfulness about shortcomings and the occasional moments of victory that we all experience. If I worded that poorly, I apologize.
She said black people shouldn’t listen to rock and roll, made fun of their hair and why they wear “do rags” in the same paragraph. Source: Spin Magazine 2002
@@nort1393 No, she is sane, and you're already copping the same plea most Courtney Love fans do. She doesn't have to be a saint, but she is definitely racist among other things, and it'd be ridiculous to act otherwise.
Yeah but thats never easy & nobody is a perfect parent. Francis had her grandmother & Auntie.... so she's lucky didn't end up in foster care or adoption. No one has had a "perfect life" we've all had some sort of cross to bear. Hopefully Francis can forgive her mom in time, when she has more life experience & wisdom. Knowing she's pretty lucky to be who she is.... I hope her ex husband gave back her dads guitar though..... that was really rude of him
@catherinenelson4848 damn can't you express empathy for a human being without having someone breathe down your back saying "uhm ackshually, other people have it worse so it's not THAT bad 🤓🤓"
Live Through This was so important to me my senior year. Despite everything that she’s done that I can’t defend, she’s an important and iconic figure to me. I can’t help but admire her for the art she made.
This is one of the best retrospectives I’ve seen about her, & honest. I like that you stuck to the facts and didn’t gloss over her faults nor deny her impact on women in music & the way they’re perceived (still to this day!)
I spoke to Courtney as a background actor on ‘Man On The Moon’. She was personable and down to earth. I told her I was a huge Nirvana fan and she said she like rap, I wasn’t really expecting that reply. Nevertheless, she was very cool to me. I even mention her on my RU-vid channel.
One time I took a class on rock and roll history in my junior year of high school. This lady in her 50s or 60s taught it but also choir. Once we got to grunge and Kurt Cobain and Coutney she was oddly critical of Courtney saying, “She is one of the most awful singers.” I don’t think she ever put that much of an opinion when talking about anyone before. To me even as a 17 year old I was like why did it even matter, that’s obviously not the point of why Courtney was in music. To each their own ig
I tried my hardest to see Hole live in New Orleans back then. She cancelled when they toured with Manson and then she cancelled again when they were headliners. Courtney’s music is so raw and I think she’s underestimated in terms of her writing ability. I hate to admit it but I’d forgotten about Love. Just learned she’d written her memoir in 2012 and it’s supposed to be released soon. I really hope she narrates her audiobook - would love listening to Courtney tell her story. I know she’s got a lot to say. Thanks for your video.
Didnt she bring a Black fan up and asked if she really like rock music and said it be like her liking lil Wayne....as if you cant like both genre. Crazy how you didnt tell that part of her story... disappointed but not surprised
Let's tell the truth why Courtney was hated- She played the mens game, that was meant to destroy her (as it has many women before her), and she WON. She should have won the Oscar for The People vs. Larry Flint. The only reason she didn't is because she's Courtney Love. For the life of me, I don't know why she wasn't in more movies. Faith No More sucked anyway. Hole was light years better.
Hollywood didn't like her reputation and she said she was tired of being harassed by ppl in the industry for roles. Remember her Weinstein quote that was ignored at the time.
You can't empathize the same way with a group that literally consists of billions of people with vastly different backgrounds the same way you can with a single person after knowing their life story. Those things are not comperable at all. And you don't know anything about the people in the comment, their own ethnicity or attitudes towards women of colour or other people in general. But yeah, just pretend you're better than all the strangers here and that you know what they're like. Maybe one day you'll see the irony of your comment.
@@dieSchreckschraube they're clearly talking about famous and controversial women of colour who rarely get this much grace when talking about their art.
@@bananapuding866who are you referencing? Sounds like you just have a constant racial grievance. Courtney love is a hugely controversial figure and illicit extreme responses. Not many white women also have the same treatment as her.
I have nothing but love for her. It's so intertwined with my sister, it's hard to sum it up. Hole and Nirvana were our greatest loves growing up and we were young, her being 16, me being 12. Belting it all out together. We obsessively collected every piece of media, we could find, every magazine, every cassette, and cd, singles, alternates and bootlegs. There was a vhs tape cued up on the ready in the vcr at all times. Just like with radio mix tapes, we always missed the very beginning! But we accumulated a helluva collection. We cried and mourned together when Kurt died, the loss of our first love. But Courtney was surviving and we could to. After my sister passed away in 2018 from complications related to addiction, I had to mourn alone and it was really hard. But I "inherited" the collection she/ we had amassed. I'm just sharing that it wasn't just some songs to us, Courtney was the "no, I'm NOT gonna shut up" woman that we both wanted to be. That doesn't leave you. What a fuking amazing video essay this was, seriously. Without bias, with no agenda (that seems ever present in male produced videos on Courtney, just sayin) , just an incredibly detailed and factual play by play, being fair even when the truth wasn't pretty. I'd totally pay to see this in a theater, it is THAT GOOD. Thank you for all the research and work that went into this production. 🙏
'Courtney came into this world with a biology that created internal turmoil - I accepted that I had not created that temperament' - awful mother . If your kid has 'attachment' problems that's ONLY the caregivers fault. That means you didn't care for your child since earliest infancy.
I have always wondered about that! I didn't birth my bonus son, but he & I have a bond, a parental attachment & love of our own, I am very much his mama as his bio-mom (she and I have a friendship going back 22 years) to the point I refer to her as my "baby mama". I have 2 bio kids of my own, we are all bonded differently but there is still love & connection no matter what. I would do anything for my 3 babies.
Wait....so her mom adopted a little biracial boy but then just gave him away to a "close family friend" like he was a fckng hamster or stray kitten?!? WTAF?!!? I hope that poor little boy grew up in a loving home and is doing ok today
I was the BIGGEST Courtney Love/Hole fan when I was a teenager. I will always be a fan of Courtney Love and I will always love the band Hole and cherish and love the memories of this time in my life. ❤ You did a great job making this video. It brought back so many great memories and I remember how obsessed I was with this band and Courtney Love. Thank you ❤
SAME Courtney was my hero as a teen in the 90s. I dressed like her, did my hair like her, I adored her! She will always be close to my heart As a rebellious teen who never felt like she fit in anywhere, Courtney made me feel SEEN
Im a huge Nirvana fan. Kurt passed away even before i was born but i always felt identify with his art. That made know Hole and Courtney's music. She is like Yoko Ono from the 90's. She and Kurt were really in love...but people has no respect for his choice. Everyone wants someone to hate and Courtney make it very easy.
Before his death, he wanted to file for divorce and leave her without a penny. He was going off drugs to be a better father. Yoko and John were in love, yes. But this is a whole other thing. Do your research, you are WAY behind.
I hope everyone in the comments who are idolizing her look into her past where she has been racist towards black people. Its crazy that she still is never held accountable for her actions everyone treats her like a baby.
Unfortunately, we know that infantilizing non-Black people when they do something racist or anti-Black is SO COMMON. It turns my stomach to see how much people bend over backwards to make disrespect to Black people, especially Black women, okay when all we're asking for is for them to stop the behavior/apologize once. That's the bare minimum and people act like we're asking people to apologize their whole lives and never talk again
I remember when I first saw Courtney Love. It was in Sid and Nancy. Everyone LOVED her in that movie. She played the spacey friend of Nancy. Gretchen, I think. Back then nobody had anything bad to say about her.
Despite her history as a controversial figure, I still love and respect her. I think she's underrated and unappreciated as a musician. I love her music with her band hole and as a solo artist. The music feels so raw and honest. To me, she has never released a bad album. Even her solo album "America's Sweetheart." Even though, that album didn't do well, and Courtney cause it a "disaster," I think it's a badass album. So many great songs. I still think its a shame and criminal that her and her band have not been inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I always thought she was a great actress as well. I wish she was in more films or TV shows.
The artist is always their worst critic. Worst because the artist is bias of their own minds in many ways. Add drugs and it clouds the mind and what is produced is an unfiltered and impulsive burst of expression translated into their craft they don't feel in control. It can leave the artist feeling regret and unsatisfied later on when they're in a different place.
Live Through This was on constant rotation when I was in my late teens/early twenties. Then I discovered Pretty on the Inside and was delighted to find it to be a strong album too. Not to mention the influence performers like Courtney had on my outlook... and fashion. Now that I am older I have found that my favourite music eras were in the late 70's and 80's but at the time the 90's stuff really spoke to me and it was a good time for female musicians to take centre stage
In the last year my mother was alive we used to watch a lot of TV. Cop shows, reality shows, House, all her choices. One night I saw that Courtney would be featured on "Behind the Music" and my mom and I watched it together. About 3/4 of the way through my mom said, "You gotta root for her". My mom totally got why I love Courtney! My mom was very Catholic and conservative. She listened to Perry Como, Nat King Cole and Jeannette Macdonald, so the last thing I expected was for her to connect with this Grunge tale. This is one of my best memories of the time I spent with my mom in her final year!
Courtney Love is certainly one rollercoaster of a person but in a way she is really endearing. I remember when I first heard Hole's music as a teen and fell instantly in love with their sound, easily one of the best of 90s alternative rock around. I remember hearing people say how Courtney Love couldn't sing worth a damn and I would defend it and still do, because during her Hole days, her voice just felt like raw rock to me. Not the most technical or classically trained but the emotion was definitely there and I just wasn't all that bothered by her singing. It was very interesting learning more about her life and one thing is for sure is that she'll always be memorable.
This video was my first time listening to Hole and Courtney's music and I honestly expected much worse. I always had the feeling people hated on her music just because they don't like her... And yeah it's true that diff people have different taste but her music is good. It's on par with Nirvana and other grunge or punk bands mostly, to me at least
@@PthumerianDusk Yeah I think you're right though I suppose I understand why some people would think strongly of her if they are around at the times she was doing her wild antics.
Great video !I am not a Courtney Love hater or apologist. She is definetely talented and had a traumatic outbringing , and I don't think she killed Kurt Cobain. That said she has been openly racist in concerts and has done some shady things to people in the industry. So I do take her with a grain of salt.
I listened to her music while giving birth and then after when they took my daughter. 2 yrs ago and I didn't even know all this about her, her music just spoke to me, she is so godly
her story of neglect, weird parent(s), illegal drugs given to small children, the rape of children, foster care, prescribed drugs, J.V is a very common history of in kids who grow up in oregon and portland
Courtney wasnt born that way. Terrible things were done to her by her parents and who knows who else. Whether you love her or hate her it always begins and ends with the parents
So bad childhood is a valid excuse to do crime ? I think not, everyone has to make a choice and bear consequences.. except her, she sends to have dodged some bullets that are still seeking her.
She has apologized and spoken about how incorrect she was. People who are stuck in the 1980s and 1990s seem to be the most resentful and hard to let go of things. She has been rather honest about having a difficult life. Can any of you imagine spending the rest of your life with your substance addiction problems publicly shown on television? Not that I am apologizing or justifying her, but when does it stop? She is deserving of redemption, especially if she so chooses.
i enjoy her music but i wish her white fans (especially white women) would acknowledge that some hatred courtney recieved was absolutely due to her behaviour and racism and not just mysoginy. i also wish this channel would uplift more amazing women of colour who contributed to the state of fashion, music, cinema and media that we have today.
yup absolutely agree with you! seeing so many white women in the comment section saying courtney is “their Kanye West” is irking tf out of me lmao. I love this channel, and as much as I would love got them to do more deep dives on the women of color that have made innumerable contributions to culture, I’d just rather watch women of color do it tbh lmao. Yhara Zayd and Intelexual Media are great creators!
Her upbringing with her mother and father absolutely contributed to her mental health problems but she’s also diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder which explains a lot.
✨Thank you for a beautiful and respectful portrait of Courtney Love! ✨ 😘✌️ Hey, listen. I have so much more respect and love for Courtney Love than I have for Madonna. I was born in 1977 so I have some "perspective" from the relative times - the post-punk era, Madonna's breakthrough, grunge and Lollapalooza, the brit-pop stage, Nirvana's big breakthrough, Hole, Cobain's unfortunate premature departure, Hole's breakthrough.. etcetera. Not to mention her career ever since. It's not only the music. She's a SO much more than decent actress. Look at her in The People VS Larry Flynth. And I bet she would've made a better Nancy than Cloe Webb or whatever the other chick name is - who looked like an old woman btw, Nancy Spungen died at the age of 20(!!!), remember... As a opiate dependent woman myself ❤️🩹 since I was 14 - I'm recovering and on Methadone since 2017 ❤️🩹 I must say I also admire the stamina because she DEFINITELY must be doing Methadone/Buprenorphine (Suboxone/Subutex) and her absolute best - or else she simply wouldn't be here. She is so amazing we simply can't begin to grasp even half of it ❤ She's a strong woman! That's an understatement though. She's worth all love and respect she can get.
Hello hopefully you see this. First off, this was a great, great essay on her. I really really appreciate how in depth you went on each album, not just live through this. LTT is a masterpiece, but so are CS and POTI (my personal fave) As a black fan, I wanted to ask that if you end up feeling compelled to talk about her "racism," please look into the context of each even. Watch the MTV special where she talks about race and rock and roll. I'm not saying I like her behavior. I'm saying some people read quotes of her out of context and then write her off as an evil racist. I highly doubt she has hatred in her heart for black people. Like the song n-word in heaven that she did. I wish she never made it, but I think it's important to note that the n-word in question is herself. Think Norman Mailer's theory of the white negro. Just wanted to say this. This was an accurate and compassionate video. Thank you!
there's literally an interview she gave when she came to brazil to play at a festival, where out of nowhere she says that "a mean black lady" treated her poorly or something. Like, be fucking for real. She's not a saint. There was also a gig where she was encouraging white fans to scream the n word as she was saying it herself in the first place. You can't excuse that.
Before 911 you could go anywhere ( pretty much) in airports. I was at LAX waiting for my friends flight to come in and I had my guitar just waiting and playing ( 1997) and I saw Courtney with her publicist ( I think) and I ran to her and asked her to sign my guitar and she did. She was in a hurry but cool and asked me if I was playing for money! Lol She will always be in my cool book.💜✌️
I as born in 1971, so the 80’s & 90’s were my most influential years… and it’s just my opinion that C.L. needed the sort of psychological help that she never received. The girl was willing to do (or allow) whatever it took to “make it” in the music industry… and tragically, it somehow worked.
Melissa Auf Der Maur's first solo album is amazing, she really deserves more recognition in the music world because she really stands on her own. Also I'm surprised you didnt mention the Babes in Toyland song Bruise Violet which was written about Courtney lol
I met her once, not that long before Kurt died-I think this is all an act, as she was very normal, very nice, and very sober. Had no idea who she was, or Dave Grohl, or Krist Novoselic, either. Nirvana was playing across the street from us at a bar in Deep Ellum in Dallas, and they came to our soundcheck-Kurt wasn't with them. They came up to talk to us after we were done, and they were all very nice people. I though they were locals. Didn't realize who they were until I saw them on the MTV Unplugged show. I keep seeing her demonized in the media, and I just don't get it.
I met her in November 1997. My Youth Pastor Told us he knew where Kurt and Courtney's House was and how to drive there. Our Church was in Auburn which is only a 30 minute drive from Seattle. We were all Greeted by her outside on the Front where the Bench is at on E Lake Washington Ave in Medrona(West Seattle). She talked with us played some songs and reminisced about Kurt and Hole. I DID get to see the Greenhouse, it was Fenced up and Guarded by two Security Officers. Courtney was very VERY Sweet, we could tell she was a little looney, but we knew she wouldn't harm a fly.
I cant imagine having so many kids you start passing them off to friends. Kids aren't pets. Pets don't deserve that. They call having too many animals "hoarding" but having too many kids to properly care for is somehow ok.
As a longtime Hole fan, I loved coming across something like this! I’ve always said that Courtney’s influence wouldn’t be fully appreciated while she’s alive. Love her or hate her she’s influential! They could never make me hate you Courtney lol🩷
Whether she likes it or not, Courtney wears all of her childhood wounds on her sleeve. As brazen and tough as she is, you still get the sense with her that there is a frightened and misunderstood little girl deep down. It's one of the biggest reasons that I will always be endeared to her in spite of her flaws. I appreciate her vulnerability.
This is the best piece of Courtney Love I have ever seen. I was at the Hole and MM show in San Francisco, it was amazing and I came away a huge fan of MM. 💖💖💖
This video was so well done, and I love that you love Nobody's Daughter as much as I do. I got into Hole in high school, but I remember not really "getting" the lyrics back then. I think it's time I revisit these albums now as an adult with a fully developed frontal lobe lol.
Great video, thank you! Please do one about Brody Dalle! She is such an inspiration and the abuse from her ex-husband she is going through right now needs more publicity... #istandwithbrody
Love the work! I can see some direct correlation between her and Lana Del Rey. Courtney sings about being “nobodys daughter” and Lana in Chemtrails sings “Nobody’s son, nobody’s daughter”. She also has a song where she says something about Joni Mitchell and “Court almost burnt down my home, Stevie’s (Stevie Nicks) callin on the telephone” Oh and Courtney cites one of her influences as Fleetwood Mac! I just love how all these women of rock are tied together by their likeness and art! ❤ So, bravo 👏 awesome work sweetie!!!
The song Violet’s lyrics “little fish” and “sky was all amethyst” are references to Kurt Cobain and/or Billy Corgan cause they’re both Pisces born in February
"Live through this" is still one of my favorite albums to this day. Listening to it brings me back to the state of 17 years old high school boy in Japan. I love everything about the album, art work and everything. I can never thank Courtney Love enough for dropping these songs to earth.
Where are all these amazing collages from? Did you make them yourself? They are so cool and time period perfect. If anyone knows please reply since im not sure if the creator will see this. Thanks!
This a great documentary on Courtney, thank you. You did such great research on the meaning behind the lyrics. I didn’t know the backstories behind the great Hole songs, especially Northern Star. I never knew that it was about Edward Norton, as well as Kurt.
My wife had to babysit her for 24 hours back in 2002. I was a huge hole fan and asked all about it. She said "of all the celebritys ive had to deal with she was yhe worst. She flicked ash on an extremely expensive rug and came on to me once she found out she was a lesbian. I virtual ran out of the house. She smelt awful and was obviously on something."
What a great video! I knew a little about her and glad to learn more. Сourtney's quip that she hexed Corgan to lose his hair is so funny and my head canon now
I am an eldest daughter. I have a 12 year old step son, a 3. Year old girl and a baby boy on the way. I REALY don't want my daughter to have the parentivied upbringing I had. And I am worried, cuz she is very caring and she looooves babies and realy looks forward to being a big sister. I don't want to take away her entusiasm, but I also don't want her to take on responsibillities that arent HERS.
